Chapter 41: UNEXPECTED SURPRISE

Abigail

Note to self, getting your brains fucked out on a Sunday night has consequences you’ll regret on a Monday morning.

My head was threatening to split open as I stepped out of my car.

Ugh, too bright.

It was barely eight, the sun had no business being this bright. I adjusted my sunglasses, gripping my Stanley cup like my life depended on it.

Three orgasms at the sanctuary last night and barely four hours of sleep, a lazy smile curled my lips.

It was worth it.

My hair was pulled behind in a ponytail, I needed it out of my face completely with the headache trying to pound my brains to mush. It was back to its natural black, every trace of the chestnut dye was rinsed out in this morning’s shower until the water ran completely clear.

I couldn’t have Finnegan sniffing

out now, could I? If Aphrodite showed up with a different color of hair that I did at work, that should get him off my trail.

Gosh, was it terrible that I was getting rather good at this?

My phone rang, cutting my thoughts and a smile tugged at my lips.

"Hi emaw-"

"Abigail Isabella Kellerman."

Oh shit. My full na?

emaw only called

by my full na when I ssed up. My heels drove to a halt on the pavent.

"What did I do?"

"What did you do?" she repeated, "I’ll tell you what you did. You let your grandmother find out from your fiance that her granddaughter’s engagent has been called off. That’s what you did. Now my granddaughter would have told

if her engagent had been called off. Wouldn’t she?"

My stomach dropped straight through the pavent. Drake had called emaw. Fuck, Of course he had.

That festering fly-brained fool. The worst mistake of my life! That degenerate housefly perching everywhere!

What exactly had he thought calling her would do? Get her to talk

into getting back with him?

I pressed two fingers against my left temple and sighed. I had been thinking of how to break the news to my grandparents for weeks but I never moved past the stage where I was disappointed that I’d make them sad.

"emaw, I... uhm, I can explain,"

"What happened, baby?" Her voice was softer now.

Around , employees trooped in and out of Wolfe Corp, the entrance doors sliding open every minute. Standing on the pavent outside, I told emaw everything that had happened.

"No he did not!" She gasped on the other end.

"That slick haired little weasel! He kept talking like he did nothing wrong."

"Yeah, Drake’s major talent is gaslighting," I hissed with contempt.

"Oh I’m telling Gerald when he wakes! That stupid boy had the nerve to cheat on you and call ? I’ll fly over right now and beat him up!"

"emaw," I drawled, snorting. God I loved her so much. "He’s not worth the back pain."

"Oh my beautiful girl." She sighed. "You could have told . You should have told

the mont it happened."

"I didn’t want you to worry,"

"I’m your grandmother," emaw snapped.

"Worrying about you is my God given right and my greatest pleasure. You’ve been carrying this alone since when? Is that why ... oh Abby, that’s why you ca to Cali in February."

Trust my grandmother to piece everything together like a crossword puzzle.

"I’m sorry, emaw, I should have told you,"

"Listen to ." She sighed. "You are a Kellerman. And the Kellermans do not beg anyone to see their worth."

"You hear ? Not Drake, not anyone. That boy did you the biggest favor of his miserable little life walking out on you. My baby girl is smart and beautiful and you are going places that boy couldn’t even dream about, and one day, one day soon, you are going to find soone who deserves every single inch of you." She added to my delight.

"Aww," I sniffed, blinking back the tears. "Now you’re going to make

cry. Thanks, emaw."

"You’ll call

first if anything happens right? You have to promise , Abby,"

My throat tightened. I wanted to take care of them, not give her and Gramps more things to worry about.

"Yes, emaw," I managed.

"That’s my girl." I could hear the smile in her voice. "Call

tonight."

"I will. Love you emaw."

"Love you more, baby. Send my regards to Annie," She said before ending the call.

I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. The clock in my phone screen read 8am. I had to be at the office in fifteen minutes so I could prepare my boss’s coffee and his itinerary for the day.

Hot, sexy Finnegan.

I bit back a smile, strutting to the doors and pushed in.

"Well well, If it isn’t my favorite coworker."

Marcus was leaning against the reception desk, his buddy Ted beside him nursing a coffee cup. Those two were always together. I had run into them several tis after my first day at work. Kate, the receptionist, sat behind her desk, filing her nails.

"I have several favorite coworkers," I said, dropping my sunglasses down my nose to look at them over the rims. "You’re not one of them. Hi Kate,"

"Ouch." Marcus pressed a hand to his chest.

"Three months of loyal service and this is what I get."

"Hi, Abigail," Kate bead. "Girl, I’m loving that skirt on you," Kate bead, pointing at my outfit. "With that wagon you’re dragging, perfect,"

I bead, twirling around for her. "I clocked it?"

"You clocked it girl!"

We cackled like fucking hyenas before Ted straightened, his blonde hair bouncing with the movent. "Wait, she’s been here three months? Marcus, doesn’t that an you owe

a hundred dollars?"

Marcus’s face squeezed in a sour look. "We said she would quit in the first month,"

"You said she would quit in the first month. I said she would last at least three." Ted shrugged, holding his palm out. "Pay up Marcus."

"You guys seriously bet on

leaving?" I scoffed. "You two are definitely moving down the list of coworkers I wouldn’t kill if there was a zombie apocalypse."

"Oh, co on," Marcus grinned and moved closer. "You know you’re a stunning woman, Abby,"

I arched a brow. "Where is this going?"

"How about you use your stunning influence to get

front row seats at the VTD Car Launch coming up?"

Oh right, the car launch. The first venue would be the race track then the hall to commorate the launch. We had already finalized so of these things but last week, Mr Wolfe had co with a new set of things to correct and change.

"Why would I do that?" I cocked my head to the side, peering at Marcus.

"Because I believed in you," he said earnestly. "In my heart."

"You jackass, you bet a hundred dollars I would quit within a month!" I swatted his arm playfully.

"I’ll na my daughter after you?"

"You’re not even married," Kate scoffed and Marcus groaned, shushing her.

"She doesn’t know that,"

Ted laughed so hard he nearly spilled his coffee. I pressed my lips together, unable to entirely suppress my smile.

"Go to work Marcus," I pointed toward the elevators. "Both of you. Stop bothering Kate, she has an actual job to do."

"Front row," Marcus called as I moved toward the elevators. "I’m just saying. Think about it."

"I’m already forgetting about it," I called back, grinning widely.

The top floor was quiet when I stepped out. The floor-to-ceiling windows let in the bright Monday morning light all over the place. I had twenty minutes before Mr Wolfe’s coffee needed to be on his desk.

I rounded the corner toward my desk and halted in my tracks. The brain tearing headache that had been niggling at my brain slamd back in full force when I saw who sat in my chair.

Alicia fucking Duke sat in my chair and beside her was-

"What the fuck are you doing here?!"
