Chapter 136: THE STALKER

Abigail

"He’s outside again."

Annette’s voice was barely above a whisper, her fingers curled around the edge of the curtain, pulling it back half an inch.

I crossed the room in four steps and peeked over her shoulder.

Gavin, the henchman, stood at the building entrance below, his hands in his jacket pockets. The doorman had both arms out, blocking his way and shaking his head rapidly.

Their mouths were moving. Even from up here I could see the tension in Gavin’s jaw. Was he going to hurt Dennis too? He had been stalking Annette the past few days. This was the third ti he had shown up at our apartnt trying to get in.

"Oh my god, he’s going to attack poor Dennis," Annette whispered, clamping a hand over her mouth. "Is he psychotic?"

"He is a murderer Annie, of course he’s fucking psychotic." I spat, pulling away from her to go to the door. I had to stop him before he hurt Dennis or anyone else. Annette yanked

back and pointed.

A couple turned the corner to the street. An elderly man walked his dog past the entrance. Gavin’s eyes flickered to them briefly and then he stepped back, said sothing to the doorman that sounded very close to "Fuck You" before walking away.

Annette dropped the curtains and slid down the wall until she hit the floor. Her hands were pressed flat to her knees, her eyes were wound up close tightly. "Well that was thrilling,"

It wasn’t. I knew she was terrified. Hell, I was terrified. The dark circles under her eyes had been there since Tuesday. She jumped at every knock. Last night I heard her get up at two in the morning and check the front door lock twice.

This was my fault.

Every single bit of it was mine.

"Annie." I dropped down beside her on the floor.

"I’m fine." She opened her eyes and gave a small weak smile. "I’m completely fine. He didn’t get in. Dennis wouldn’t let him in."

"I’m sorry. You t him because you were trying to protect

from getting caught. You would never have t him if not for . I’m so sorry, Annette."

"Oh co on, it’s not your fault he’s an obsessive son of a bitch," she pushed herself up off. "I’ve been wanting a bath all morning. Do we have that lavender thing left or did you use it?"

"It’s on the second shelf,"

She squeezed my shoulder once before walking into the bedroom to take a shower.

It was a Saturday and both of us were trapped inside because there was a murderer who was now obsessed with my best friend.

I never should have gotten her involved in this in the first place. My phone buzzed on the sofa and reluctantly I trudged towards it.

Finnegan : I can’t see you. I’m at Arthur’s party and I don’t see those blue eyes anywhere.

My lips curled up in a smile. I shook my head at the bluntness. It was kind of sweet. My stomach grew all fuzzy as I typed back

: I couldn’t co.

Three dots appeared imdiately but then they disappeared and my phone buzzed with a call instead.

His na flashed on the screen and I picked it, my heart racing in delight. I’d missed hearing his voice.

"Why can’t you co?"

"Why, good afternoon to you too, Mr Wolfe," I teased, dropping on the sofa. "Sothing ca up."

"What’s up?" He said gruffly. "Are you fine? Did you have a panic attack?"

"No no, I’m fine, really." I said through my teeth. I couldn’t leave Annette alone to deal with Gavin all on her own.

Heck, I had to find a way to fix this. Should I report it to the police?

".... Abigail? Are you there?"

I had zoned out and didn’t hear what he had said.

"Sorry, yeah I’m here."

"Are you sure you’re fine?"

"I am,Finn. I’ll see you tomorrow at the club."

If I could survive today first.

"Sunday." He murmured darkly.

"Sunday," I confird. "You’ll survive one night without ."

"I’ve survived considerably longer than one night without you. I simply prefer not to."

This man. I bit back a giggle, guilt surging through . I wouldn’t be having fun at all. Annette was suffering because of .

"Good night."

"It’s three in the afternoon."

"Good afternoon then." I smiled at the ceiling. "Go enjoy Arthur’s party."

"I’ll see you tomorrow," his deep hoarse voice filled my ears just before he hung up.

I lowered the phone from my ear and quickly punched the only words I could gather that had been circling in my head since dawn.

What would you do if you were being stalked?

I read the reports and articles I could find for about twenty minutes. The articles all said the sa things. Docunt everything, report to police and get a restraining order.

But the comnts under every article said the sa things in response.

"Reported it, they asked if he had touched

and said to call back when sothing actually happens," There were many comnts like that.

I couldn’t go to the police with Gavin, without Cole’s phone. I needed proof of what he actually was, because without it he was just a man who kept showing up at a building and the doorman was keeping him out.

The police would find different excuses. I had to get that phone. I couldn’t drag Annette any deeper into this. My best friend could not be living in fear all because of . This was my fight. I had dragged her far enough into it already.

The bathroom water was still running.

I pulled up the tracker app and saw that Cole’s phone was in a fixed location. So place in the middle of the city. I pinched the screen, zooming in when three heavy pounds on our front door shook it in the fra.

"What the hell?"I cursed, rising to my feet when a voice spoke and it stopped

straight in my tracks.

"Hi dear. It’s Gavin." The voice of the man who killed Raymond Cole filtered in from the other end of the door. "I know you’re ho."
