The aftermath of the sparring match left the palace grounds unusually lively. The spectators were abuzz, servants scurried to tidy up the training grounds, and a sense of camaraderie lingered in the air. Argider was basking in the afterglow of her wives' playful antics, unaware of the storm brewing elsewhere. Elira, however, was far from relaxed.

As the crowd thinned, she stood by one of the palace's upper balconies, gazing down at the sprawling gardens below. Her sharp eyes caught sight of soone moving through the shadowed hedges—Callista. Draped in her usual flowing robes of deep erald and silver embroidery, Callista exuded grace, but there was sothing off about her presence this ti. She moved with purpose, her head tilted slightly as if listening to sothing no one else could hear.

Elira's instincts prickled. She leaned forward, narrowing her eyes. Callista paused near the edge of the garden, her gaze lifting montarily. For a split second, their eyes t, and Elira's breath hitched.

Sothing in Callista's expression sent a chill down her spine. A knowing smile? A fleeting glare? It was impossible to decipher.

"Elira?" Argider's voice called from behind, breaking her focus.

Elira quickly turned, masking her unease. "I'll be back later," she said curtly, leaving before Argider could ask further questions.

Confrontation with Callista

The moon was high when Elira made her way to Callista's chambers. The corridors were eerily quiet, save for the occasional echo of her footsteps. When she arrived, she knocked once and entered without waiting for a reply.

Callista was seated by the window, her silhouette illuminated by the soft glow of moonlight. She didn't turn to acknowledge Elira's entrance, her fingers delicately tracing patterns on the rim of a porcelain teacup.

"Elira," Callista said smoothly, her voice as soft as silk. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Elira crossed her arms, her tone sharp. "The chaos earlier. The intruders, the disruptions—don't tell you had nothing to do with it."

Callista finally turned, her serene expression unshaken. "I don't recall having a hand in any of that. Why accuse ?"

"Because," Elira stepped closer, "everything seems too coincidental. The palace's defenses are a ss, and you—always perfectly poised—seem completely unbothered by it."

Callista chuckled lightly, a sound that only deepened Elira's suspicion. "And here I thought you ca for a pleasant chat. You think I orchestrated the events of today? Whatever for?"

"You tell ."

Callista's gaze sharpened, and for the first ti, a sliver of irritation crossed her features. "If I were involved, Elira, do you think you'd be standing here accusing so boldly?"

Elira's hand instinctively twitched toward her side, where her dagger usually rested. But Callista caught the movent and smiled faintly.

"You're paranoid," Callista said, rising to her feet. "I suggest you focus on protecting Argider instead of looking for imaginary threats in the shadows."

Elira's jaw tightened. "I'll be watching you, Callista. Don't think I'm blind to whatever ga you're playing."

Callista inclined her head, her smile unfaltering. "Watch all you like, darling. You'll find nothing."

The Warning

By the ti Elira returned to Argider's chambers, the moon had drifted further across the sky. Argider was seated by the hearth, her hands cradling a cup of tea as Kian dozed off in a small cot nearby. The warmth of the firelight softened Argider's features, making her look more vulnerable than usual.

"Elira," Argider greeted with a tired smile. "You're back."

Elira shut the door behind her and walked over, her steps deliberate. "We need to talk."

Argider frowned, setting her cup down. "What's wrong?"

"It's about Callista."

At the ntion of her na, Argider's expression shifted, a mixture of curiosity and concern. "What about her?"

Elira hesitated for a mont, then sat across from Argider, leaning forward. "I don't trust her. I think she's involved in sothing… dangerous."

Argider blinked, visibly taken aback. "Callista? Dangerous? Elira, that's—she's always been kind, supportive—"

"That's the problem," Elira interrupted. "She's too perfect. She moves through this palace like she owns it, and no one ever questions her. But I've seen the way she looks at things, the way she moves… She's hiding sothing."

Argider's brow furrowed, her hands tightening around the cup. "Callista's been nothing but helpful to . She's—she's like family."

"That's exactly why she's dangerous," Elira pressed. "She's close to you, close enough to manipulate you if she wanted to." Experience more on empire

Argider's hesitation was palpable. "Elira… I understand your concern, but Callista has never given a reason to doubt her."

Elira leaned back, frustration flickering across her face. "You're too trusting, Argider. That's how people get hurt."

"I can't just accuse her without proof," Argider countered, her voice firm but conflicted. "If Callista were truly a threat, wouldn't she have done sothing by now?"

"Maybe she's waiting," Elira said darkly. "Or maybe she's already done sothing, and you just haven't noticed yet."

Argider fell silent, her gaze dropping to the fire. The room was quiet except for the crackling of the flas and Kian's soft breathing.

Finally, Argider sighed. "I'll… keep an eye on her. But I can't treat her as an enemy without reason."

Elira's lips pressed into a thin line. "Fine. But don't let your guard down. Not around her."

Argider nodded slowly, though the doubt lingering in her eyes was impossible to miss.

Shadows in the Palace

As the night deepened, Argider found herself unable to sleep. Elira's words echoed in her mind, intertwining with the mory of Callista's gentle smiles and kind words. Could it all be a facade?

She rose from her bed and wandered to the balcony, staring out at the sprawling palace grounds. The shadows seed deeper tonight, the air heavier. Sowhere in the distance, she thought she saw movent—a fleeting figure disappearing into the darkness.

"Callista…" Argider murmured under her breath.

She didn't want to believe it. Callista had been a constant source of stability, a presence she could rely on when everything else seed to be falling apart. But Elira's warning had planted a seed of doubt, and now it was growing, twisting her perception of everything she thought she knew.

From the corner of her eye, she noticed a faint flicker of light near the garden. Her heart skipped a beat. Soone was there, moving silently among the hedges.

She stepped back into her chambers, her mind racing. If Elira was right, then the palace might be in more danger than she'd ever realized.

For the first ti in a long while, Argider felt the weight of her title press heavily on her shoulders. She wasn't just a ruler. She was a target. And now, the people she trusted most might be the very ones putting her in harm's way.
