Chapter 174: Unruly Court
The king and queen entered the court room, but instead of the imdiate hush that accompanied their arrival, the vampires turned louder even more. There were those that practically yelled over the others so their concerns could be heard, while so even at the verge of fighting.
No wonder Marquis Lanz seed frantic.
Aleksander’s head started to swarm with a lot of voices around him, mostly even directed at him as well. He closed his eyes and breathed in slowly, inhaling and exhaling to refocus himself. Shortly after, the voices that flooded his head were muted, and Aleksander could think straight again.
’It had been a long ti since I slipped and made a mistake like that,’ he thought at the back of his head, ’Perhaps it is the jitters.’
He can’t even rember the last ti he felt dizzy with every bit of information and ranting that flooded his head. Aleksander had since learned to control his magic at a young age, but at tis he couldn’t deny that he too made mistakes.
Elys had let go of Aleksander’s hand as they entered the High Courts. As they walked regally to their thrones, the vampires’ whispers and worries increased into a crescendo that bordered into worriso and annoying at the sa ti.
"Your majesties, is it true?"
"How did an Eastern spy infiltrate us? This is utter incompetence!"
"Behead those that had remained lax over the borders! Put a stake through their hearts!"
"Your majesty, what has caused the fires in the capital?"
"My king, what are we to do?!"
Aleksander and Elys remained calm despite the utter chaos that surrounded them. They arrived at their thrones, and slowly settled down their seats. Elys raised her chin and scanned the vampires around them, and noted her ladies in waiting had stood to her side where they were more visible.
She hid a smile beneath her cool deanor. The young queen was pleased that the ladies stayed by her side despite their initial questionable loyalty.
Elys turned towards her husband, and saw Aleksander had gripped the edge of his armrest tightly, his knuckled basically turning white. She reached out to him and touched his tense hand, and Aleksander instantly cald down.
"You should address them now, husband," she suggested, "I think both of us have had enough of this noise already."
Aleksander laughed at her remark and then turned to the vampires in front of them. He saw Henry and several servants handing out each a glass of fresh blood, while Marquis Lanz oversaw the whole fiasco.
As the Marquis locked eyes with the young king, Aleksander waved for the vampire to co forward and Marquis Lanz imdiately obliged. Aleksander leaned over to his right and whispered to the Marquis an instruction.
Marquis Lanz stood straight afterwards, squaring his shoulders and raising his chin up high. The vampire started to open his mouth, and then he announced, "Everyone, the King Aleksander Ardorlean requests for your silence!"
Now Aleksander have never heard Marquis Lanz yell that loudly before, but this ti around, the volu was so high that even a few vampires had to cover their sensitive ears from his hoarse voice.
The High Court slowly turned silent, whereas a few murmurings still played in the background.
Aleksander cleared his throat and then said, "Raise your hand, those of you with a genuine question, should you want your concerns to be entertained."
"And you all better be sure to have your questions relevant to the situation at hand, you must rember that the King Aleksander called for this eting in lieu of the recent fire that ravaged through a huge part of the vampire capital," Elys added.
They heard a stray sarcastic scoff from the far side of the room, but the two decided to let it slide. It was nothing worth of their ti at all. There were more serious matters to attend to at the mont than a lone vampire who disagreed with them.
If he ever does scoff loudly again, then perhaps Elys would not hesitate to blast him to pieces.
"Well, are there not a single hand that shall raise here?" Aleksander asked.
As soon as the young king said those words, pale and thin hands shot up the High Courts, several of them from heads of the noble families. Aleksander noted the familiar faces, and then selected a random person near him.
"You, what is it that you wanted to ask?" Aleksander said.
"Your majesty," the female vampire bowed. "I am Gizem, and I serve the palace courts. I am concerned of the rumors that an Eastern spy had actually gained access to the palace the other day," she said, "Is there any truth to that?"
Aleksander pondered on what he was to reply to the question.
Would it be to their advantage if he had it known that the Eastern Kingdom sent Sir Noa to him as they want the king to stand trial in the East? The vampire ntally shook his head.
’No, that would only rally my enemies to have
go to the East,’ he thought.
"That is still under investigation, Lady Gizem," Aleksander answered instead. "Alright, next! We don’t have enough ti."
Hands raised once again like fungus sprouting from everywhere. Aleksander saw Archduke Keane raise his hand, and Aleksander pointed to him.
"What are your concerns, Archduke Keane?" the young king asked again.
Archduke Keane ca forward and adjusted his vest to make him look more presentable.
His wise eyes gazed back at Aleksander and Elys, and then he spoke, "Your majesty, I humbly request that we reinforce our borders. Agriculture for the only wine we drink aside from blood is around enslavent camps at the borders, if a spy truly ca into our kingdom, then the borders should be out top priority aside from finding that said spy."
The corner of Elys’ mouth twitched with the ntion of the enslavent camp. She was suddenly reminded the main reason why she had even agreed to beco the vampire’s queen.
It was for the sake of the slaves and all the human servants within the kingdom.
