Chapter 165: A Human?
The royal couple left the capital center in search of the fire’s perpetrator. Aleksander scoured every mind he could read throughout the vicinity, and by sheer luck, had pinpointed their pri suspect.
"To your right, go through that narrow pass," Aleksander instructed Elys who was up front.
"How much farther are we from the man?" she asked him as she made a sharp turn to a tight alleyway.
The passage was so narrow that to actually ride a horse without bumping into dumped things on the sides was relatively not an easy feat. Aleksander was even finding it a bit hard not to get his horse to bump into a pile of dump trash.
On the other hand, his wife was speeding faster up ahead.
She was riding her horse with great expertise, and the vampire was all the more enamored by the elegance she displayed. Aleksander kept on discovering what Elys was capable of.
His queen was adept in many things.
"Aleksander?!" she called out to him, "How much farther?"
The vampire blinked several tis. He was so deep in thought that he even forgot to respond to his wife’s question. Aleksander slapped his face and shook his head to clear his mind.
"Just several ters from here on out," he quickly replied.
Elys turned her attention back to the road, her face full of determination. The palace life within the vampire kingdom had been too quiet lately that she worried sothing bad – and big – was about to happen.
Her worries turned out to co sooner than later.
The young queen wouldn’t have minded if she and Aleksander were targeted directly, but to involve innocent lives, now that was out of question for her. Whoever this man was nor where he ca from, Elys swore that she would catch him herself.
"There!" Elys pointed out to a tiny person trudging along the dimly lit alley.
Surprisingly, he wasn’t wearing a green hood as per the description of Sir Wiriam’s informant. Elys assud perhaps he had tried to throw out his clothes to blend in with the capital residents.
"Halt! Stop right there, you!" Elys ordered the man.
He jolted as he slowly turned his head and twisted his body halfway just to look at the person that had called him from behind. Seeing the royal emblem and equally regal air that surrounded the Western King and Queen, the man instantly started to panic.
Elys and Aleksander were quick to notice his response to seeing the two of them.
The man picked up his pace, and even though he was still trudging along the walls of the narrow alleyway, his speed did accelerate. But trudging as fast as he could was not going to cut it. Especially if the ones chasing you were the vampire king and his warrior queen.
"Stop where you are or suffer the consequences of your ill choices!" Aleksander called out to the man. When their suspect didn’t heed his call, the vampire got mad and yelled, "How dare you disregard your Queen’s orders?!"
The passage was slowly turning narrower, and it ca to a point that their horses couldn’t go on any longer. To add to that, the man had been toppling crates and bins down in order to hamper Elys and Aleksander’s approach.
"Hup!" Elys swung her leg out and jumped off her horse.
She twisted her body as she kicked the wall beside her, a stunt that could have been nothing short but a way to intimidate their prey. Aleksander did the sa, jumping from his horse’s back and then to Elys’ horse before finally landing to the ground with nothing but a light thud.
"Catch him, wife!" Aleksander said as Elys sprinted off.
"As if I would do anything aside from that!" she replied.
"Haha, forgive , my queen. I shall not state the obvious next ti," Aleksander laughed, adrenaline rushing through his veins as he quickened his pace. The limping man was sure to be caught in no ti.
Their suspect continued to bring down anything he could get his hands on. Quite a few rats and other vermin scattered about, including a whole load of rotting garbage. The sll was profoundly nauseous, and Aleksander couldn’t wait for them to get out of the place.
He also threw in so small improvised bombs, and both the royal couple was taken aback for a mont when the explosion rocked their ears.
Elys dodged here and there, minding how the man was pushing himself too far. She could tell that he was slowly getting wind up, but Elys wanted to tire him before she finally catches him.
The three played a ga of cat and mouse, the prey hiding away with every single thing he could get his hands on. He turned into random corners, each of them seemingly getting smaller in width than the last.
Finally, the young queen saw they were nearing a dead end. She heard Aleksander smirk behind her, as if he found the chase being ironic considering how much damage the man had done to the capital.
"Alright, this has gone to far," Elys muttered under her breath. "Playti is over, you son of a bitch!"
She grabbed a heavy bin, and with all her might, tossed it over the man. Aleksander’s mouth dropped with awe, as he took in the fit form of Elys as she had held the bin up, her muscled arms pushing it with much force that anyone hit would surely get knocked out.
KLANG!
"Agkh!!!" the man wailed in pain.
And just as the vampire assud, Elys hit the man precisely on his back. The minute that the bin connected, Aleksander knew that it was ga over for their suspect.
The man dropped to the ground, writhing in pain. If he was any vampire who could use magic, things would have been much more difficult. It was a good thing that he was human.
Human?
Aleksander shook his head in confusion. Why would a human try to burn the capital?
