Chapter 189: Night Conversation
"You know that you can be scary sotis, right?" Higo suddenly asked.
"Hm?" Kumiko tilted her head cutely, smiling at the boy like an innocent girl. "I don’t know what you an by that, Ryukkun." She pouted as if his words offended her. However, Higo just snorted, didn’t buy the act here.
"You might be fooling anyone else with your creepy smile, but I know this is just you being playful. I know you long enough to differentiate which smile is the angry one and which one is not, so don’t play around like that." He said, flicking a finger to her forehead gently.
Kumiko just pouted, huffing slightly in annoyance while also rubbing her forehead lightly.
It was the night after the ga was over, and after three hours of training from Asahikawa back to Hakodate. Just like the usual, though, they enjoyed their private ti from the station to their ho so slowly, not wanting to get over this as quickly as possible.
The sky was dark already, and as they got closer to winter, they could say goodbye to the sun. While yes, they could still have sunlight here and there, it would beco a rarity once snow started to fall, and unfortunately, in the northern part of Japan, they often got an early winter.
Still, Higo didn’t really mind the weather. No, with Kumiko on his side, the cold and dark night suddenly beca quite romantic, especially once the street light was on. Honestly, while he himself had never dated anyone else, Higo truly believed that a couple didn’t have to go to so many dates; just casual walking like this with their daily chat would be enough to fill their heart.
Of course, that didn’t an Higo wouldn’t plan for a date. No, he had already asked his sister in Tokyo to make a list of scenic spots in the new capital city, and once they were in the National Tournant, they could go there together as a couple.
As for the possibility of them failing to advance there? Nah, that had never been in Higo’s mind at all.
"How’s your ankle, by the way?" Kumiko suddenly asked, snapping the boy out of his thoughts. She looked at his left foot concernedly, as if noticing there was sothing wrong with it. "The way you landed before wasn’t really that smooth, right? Is it okay? If you need, I can bring you an ointnt oil, you know?"
Yeah, this happened in the ga earlier, on one occasion when Higo tried to claim the cross from the flank. The ho team’s pitch had quite bad quality, and once he landed, his left foot slipped for a mont, giving a sharp pain sensation for a mont.
However, after a while, everything was back to normal, and Higo himself had already forgotten about the pain. It was only when Kumiko reminded him that the boy rembered what happened at that ti, and honestly, he could feel his heart ward at the concern she showed for him like this.
’Yeah, instead of a thousand dates, this daily concern sure is the best thing in the world, huh?’ He grinned goofily. Of course, the boy didn’t forget to answer the question. "Don’t worry, everything is under my control. I am not that easy to be brought down by my opponent." He flexed his bicep playfully, slapping the muscle there quite loudly.
Kumiko just had the corner of her lips twitching amusedly, before finally letting loose a lodious giggle that could lt his heart straight away.
"Stop playing around like that and tell
if it is okay or not!" She slapped his shoulder playfully. "Seriously, if your condition is bad, it will not just be
who is anxious, but the rest of the team as well. You are our guardian angel on the back, our Hakodate’s Iron Wall. It would be different without you." Her giggle was full of playfulness.
"Oh, God! Not you too!" Higo groaned, sohow shuddered at the new nickna put on him. T
This was sothing he got from Hokkaido’s online sports news, where that platform broke down his role as the team’s spiritual leader on the back. At the end of the article, they put the nickna ’The Iron Wall of Hakodate’ quite big as if they were proud of it, and Higo had never been more embarrassed than when he read that out loud.
It wasn’t like he didn’t like the attention. Hell, the boy was flattered that the local news covered him, showing that people’s eyes had already fallen to his performance. Still... The nickna was so cringey that it made him shudder. It also didn’t help that his teammates used this to tease him to death, and now, he couldn’t get any peace whenever he was with the team.
"I don’t get why you are embarrassed, though. It is a nice nickna." Kumiko giggled more, making Higo grumble with so many rude hand gestures flying in the sky.
"... Well, yeah, the nickna is cool. But it would be nothing if we failed to get further in the national tournant. People would just forget about
if that happened, right?" He murmured lowly, his fist clenched unconsciously.
This made the atmosphere somber for a mont, as indeed, if the team failed, his na would disappear together with the rest of the team into the abyss that people would never take a glance at again. While Higo only wanted to go to the national for the sake of his promise with Kumiko, the thought of being forgotten was frightening enough.
"Still... Just three rounds more..." Higo gnashed his teeth ferally. They were quite close to their ho at this point, and the boy suddenly stopped walking under the street light, staring at the girl of his life with the intensity he had never shown before. "Just three more matches, and I will bring you to the National Tournant. Just wait, Kumiko-chan..."
Kumiko felt the heat rush toward her face, and even though she could not see her own face, the girl was so sure that her head turned so red like a ripe tomato right now.
Still, a bright smile curled on her lips, and in an impulsive mont, the girl skipped into his arms in a quick move, pecking his cheek and said, "Don’t worry, I will wait for you. Please, bring
to that summit, okay?"
