The court continued on and I ignored most of it. I didn’t even rember when it was over Because my mind was completely elsewhere. It was only when Chiara patted my shoulder and gestured for to walk with her.
We walked out of the balcony together. The wife’s of the ministers were walking behind us and most of them disappeared or walked past us halfway which made think that she was walking slowly on purpose. She knew I had questions that I wanted her to answer.
"The Queen is more important than the king." I stated, while walking with her. "This is one of the first things I have seen that I never thought would co true."
She huffed but there was a smile on her face. "I do not know why it is not the sa in your world. The Queen is the bridge of one life to the next. She is the one that gives birth to the heir to the throne and it is a given that she is respected more than the king."
That was quite understandable. The respect to the Queen given by them was astounding and I do not think any other kingdom ever did so.
As if my mind could sense that he was near , my eyes moved to him, who was climbing up the stairs with Vaugh and Allen.
"Tristan." I stepped forward before I could even think about what I was going to do. "Can we talk?"
He halted and so did everyone else.
Tristan nodded, his eyes glancing at before he pointed the way forward. Covering the distance between us, I walked with him once flow above where it turned out his office was.
He opened the door for and once I was in, closed it before moving to set back behind the desk. "What can I help you with, Genevive?"
Tristan went ahead to pull out a chair for in front of him for which he actually got up from his desk since I had not taken a seat yet.
"Thank you." I said before lowering myself comfortably into the seat. He lightly pushed it towards the desk before taking his place behind task again.
Allowing myself to collect my thoughts first and letting the silence prevail for a few monts, I spoke,
"It is not entirely fair that you have chosen to punish both of us. When I asked you to punish , execute on the grounds of treason, you said he would rather not kill . So you chose to punish . Yet, here you are punishing both of us."
"And your point being?"
I blinked, trying to get rid of the humiliation that I felt. "My point is, you cannot choose to punish both of us. You chose to punish and you have to punish only. Wh—"
He raised his fingers slightly, his palm still remained on the desk but he silenced . "Do I have to remind you that you were both involved in carrying out a coup against . Since you both were equally involved, the punishnt will be equally carried out as well."
"But—"
"As the king, I can decide to punish whover I see fit. And this particular event, I am going to punish both of you." He finished, his eyes neutral. They did not show any kind of anger or any other emotion that he felt.
It left in the dark more than I would like.
Anger started to simr inside and no matter how much I tried to bury it inside, it found a way out and here, it was word vomit.
"I would never have to betray you if it was not for the fact that it was your People hurting humans! Are you not aware that they are going around biting people to suck their blood? Beloved or not, there is no reason for anyone to hurt anyone else who is inferior to them!" By the end of it, I was breathing heavily and glaring at him without any sha left.
A Slow smile stretched on his face. He tilted the edge of one side of his lips up before it went to a full blown smile.
Tristan shifted in his chair before leaning forward. "Had you co to with the sa passion for this problem, it could have been solved with them remaining humans and retaining their true identities. You chose to lead them into a part of treason, knowing that I, as any other King, was not going to be kind to them."
His face beca stoic. "This problem could have been solved peacefully but now many people will have to endure sothing as close to death as a punishnt for this."
My eyes lower to the desk thinking about it. Yes, I could have co to him all along but I did not trust him enough to carry out an action regarding this.
If Tristan had to do sothing about it, he would have done sothing about it before I ca to know of this problem.
"As the king and as a man who recently conquered a kingdom by hostile takeover, I have a lot of things to worry about. I would have appreciated it if you had taken charge for this."
had snapped up. He had just read my mind!
He stood up and walked towards , only stopping behind my chair before his hand landed on top of it.
"This is the last ti we’re discussing this topic. The punishnts will be carried out at designated ti and there is nothing you can do about it. I want this matter buried right here, Genevive. No more talking about it."
I kept on staring at the desk. The countless papers that called for his attention as I heard him take the first step away from .
"You cheated ." The words left my mouth before I could think about anything. They were, after all, all I could think about.
He stopped walking. "So did you."
Then, I heard the door close.
