Gu Jiao talked with the matriarch of the Yao Family for a while, and watched her take the dication. One of the dicines had a tranquillising effect. Soon, the matriarch leaned back in her rattan chair and fell asleep.
Gu Jiao covered her with a blanket.
The housemaid, hearing no more sounds from inside, softly pushed the door open and entered. She glanced at the sleeping matriarch of the Yao Family, and whispered to Gu Jiao, “Is madam asleep?”
Gu Jiao nodded, and left the room.
The housemaid also followed her out, softly closing the door, “Miss, how is madam’s condition?”
Gu Jiao said, “Her condition has worsened again, becoming almost as bad as when she was at the Villa.”
The housemaid, scared, asked, “Is it that serious?”
Gu Jiao responded, “It’s not as severe as it was at the beginning.”
The housemaid showed so relief, and then sighed lancholically, “After madam returned, her mood was actually not very good. She was holding it all in until the day she went to Bishui Alley, found out that the Young Master was being bullied, and completely snapped. She went to the third young master’s courtyard and made a massive fuss… The madam even brought a dagger… The madam said ‘We should all die together’… I was scared to death. Gu Jiao inspected every single item.
The housemaid asked, “Is there a problem?”

“Oh!” The housemaid led Gu Jiao to the matriarch’s room, where Gu Jiao inspected every corner, even the incense, soap nuts, rouge, and face powder weren’t overlooked.
“There’s also no issue here,” she said.
Could it be that she was overthinking it?
Gu Jiao then asked, “Has madam been in close contact with anyone?”
The housemaid shook her head, “No, madam hardly ever leaves the courtyard here in the mansion. She only goes out to visit Miss and the Young Master. The Marquis used to visit often, but recently he’s been busy with the Ministry of Works and often doesn’t return ho for days.”
Gu Jiao rubbed her chin thoughtfully.
With the incident of the matriarch’s poisoning in the Manor still fresh in the housemaid’s mind, she asked with apprehension, “Miss, are you suspecting that soone… is trying to harm the madam?”
Gu Jiao pondered for a mont, then said, “From the current investigation, there’s no related evidence.”
Just as her words ended, a cold wind blowing carrying a few snowflakes and a trace of elusive, faint fragrance gently drifted over.
Gu Jiao looked in the direction the scent was coming from, “What’s over that wall?”
