163: Madam Chang's Suffering, The Third Young Master's Gift

"Young Master, do be careful!" Qingniang cried out anxiously, yet Pang Jiayan paid her no mind as he clambered up the rockery. His small form was surprisingly nimble, and in no ti at all, he was standing atop the high peak.

Qin Shuang and Qin Wan watched from below, their hearts in their throats. Qingniang said apologetically, "Since he was little, the young master has loved climbing high places and darting in and out of the rockery caves. We couldn't stop him, so the Master gave him the small red tower in Huiyuan."

Huiyuan was the main courtyard where Pang Fuliang and Madam Chang resided. The small red tower was a three-story structure behind it. Qin Shuang was slightly surprised. "The Third Young Master stopped sharing a bed with his mother at such a tender age?"

At this, Qingniang's gaze turned tenderly towards Pang Jiayan's direction. "Though the young master loves climbing and sotis enjoys playing pranks, in other ways, he's more sensible than most children. He stopped sleeping with Madam when he was three. Usually, he's quite quiet. It's just when he gets like this… well, it's a bit of a headache."

Indeed, for a child whose hands and feet weren't fully coordinated, a penchant for climbing was worrying.

Qin Shuang remarked, "The Third Young Master is rather unique. He'll surely grow up to be very clever."

Qingniang nodded with a smile. Though just a servant, it was evident her affection for Pang Jiayan was genuine.

With a murder case arising in the manor, Qin Shuang, though terrified at night, found herself unable to sit still during the day. Just after breakfast, she insisted on going for a walk. Last ti, Pang Yiwen had taken them only as far as the Lotus Pond. Qin Shuang, now feeling adventurous and unafraid, had pulled Qin Wan along. Since Bai Ying was almost fully recovered and following them, Qin Wan had yielded.

Unexpectedly, upon reaching the Lotus Pond, they again found Pang Jiayan scrambling over the rockery.

"The garden may seem large, but it's usually rather desolate. With you young ladies visiting, it finally has a bit of liveliness. These past few days, the young master has been in an especially playful mood…" Qingniang sighed softly. "Hearing from Madam that you young ladies were supposed to leave today, but the… the incident delayed you. I'm afraid your families back ho must be worried."

Qin Wan gave a gentle smile. "That's nothing to be concerned about. We just need to return to the capital before the New Year." Then, as if rembering sothing, she asked, "Why isn't Madam with you?"

At the question, Qingniang's eyes dimd slightly, and she lowered her gaze. "Madam… isn't feeling well. She's still resting in bed."

Qin Wan frowned. "Is she ill?"

Seeing this, Qin Shuang hurriedly said, "If Madam is ill, she can treat her! Her dical skills are excellent!"

The old Qin Shuang would never have praised Qin Wan. Truly, she had changed a great deal.

Yet, Qingniang's eyes flickered hesitantly. "Madam's illness isn't serious… It's just a minor ailnt…"

This evasive look was obvious even to Qin Shuang, let alone Qin Wan. Qin Shuang glanced at Qin Wan and lowered her voice. "What's really wrong with Madam?"

"Can you truly heal sickness?" Suddenly, Pang Jiayan's figure popped out from beneath the rockery right in front of them.

One mont he had been on the peak; the next, he had slipped down to the very bottom.

He must have overheard Qin Shuang's remark. Now, his gaze fixed intently on Qin Wan. Qin Wan nodded. Qin Shuang chid in, "Your eldest brother even requested her to treat an illness…"

ntioning Pang Yiwen, Pang Jiayan gave a soft humph. He toddled over on his short legs to stand before Qin Wan. "Could you examine my mother?"

Looking at Pang Jiayan's exquisite, jade-like little face, Qin Wan couldn't refuse.

"Alright." Then she glanced back at Qingniang. "Though I wonder if it would be convenient."

Qingniang's expression held a hint of concealnt. Qin Wan suspected Madam Chang's illness might be sothing unsuitable for outsiders to know about, and Pang Jiayan, being young, had simply spoken up without understanding.

Qingniang looked at Pang Jiayan. "Young Master…"

Pang Jiayan turned to face her. "My mother is in so much pain she could die."

Hearing this, Qingniang's face filled with heartache, but she whispered, "…Then Master must not know."

Pang Jiayan nodded with an air of a miniature adult. "You go check where Father is. We'll wait here."

Qingniang looked at Pang Jiayan, then at Qin Wan, and finally nodded before leaving.

Thus, both Qin Wan and Qin Shuang understood. Madam Chang's illness was certainly not simple. Not only was it inconvenient for others to see her, but apparently Pang Fuliang also did not want outsiders to know…

Qin Shuang felt hesitant. Qin Wan felt the sa. Yet Pang Jiayan looked at her. "Can you make my mother not hurt anymore?"

Qing Wan replied gently, "What illness does Madam have? As long as it isn't so rare or difficult disease, I likely have a thod."

Pang Jiayan didn't say what illness it was, only looked at Qin Wan with a asure of trust. "You can."

Qing Wan and Qin Shuang exchanged glances, both feeling utterly bewildered.

After waiting the ti it took to drink a cup of tea, Qingniang returned. "Young Master, the Master and Prefect Wang are in that lady's courtyard."

A light shone in Pang Jiayan's eyes. "Quick, you, follow us."

He looked at Qin Wan, then frowned a mont later. "You two can co. The other maids cannot."

Fuling and Bai Ying, standing behind, imdiately frowned. Both recalled the incident at the Hundred Herb Garden. The Divine Physician Sun Haoyue, who everyone thought was such a good and honorable man, had hard so many. If even Sun Haoyue couldn't be trusted, how much less could anyone from the Pang household?

"No, I must follow my young lady."

" too."

Fuling and Bai Ying spoke in succession. Pang Jiayan's brow furrowed. He looked at Fuling and Bai Ying. "You are loyal indeed. Fine then, you two may follow, but you cannot enter the room."

With that, Pang Jiayan strode north. Perhaps too familiar with the garden, or perhaps luckily, they didn't encounter any Pang household servants along the winding path to Huiyuan. They only saw an old maidservant waiting at the entrance.

Seeing her, Qingniang hurried forward. "Arranged?"

The old woman nodded. "I've sent the others away on errands."

Qingniang gave a confirming hum, then invited Qin Wan and Qin Shuang inside.

Huiyuan was larger than Qin Wan had imagined, but she had no ti to take in the sights, following Qingniang and Pang Jiayan straight to the inner chambers. Soon, the group reached Madam Chang's private bedroom. The sleeping quarters of Madam Chang and Pang Fuliang were as opulently furnished as one would expect of a wealthy family. When Qin Wan and Qin Shuang entered, Madam Chang was lying on the bed, lost in thought.

Hearing movent, Madam Chang instinctively turned her head. Upon seeing Qin Wan and Qin Shuang, her face imdiately changed color.

"Young Miss Qin… Qin…"

"Mother, don't be afraid. Father doesn't know."

Pang Jiayan scurried to Madam Chang's bedside. Qin Wan and Qin Shuang approached a few steps and curtseyed.

As they drew near, Qin Wan and Qin Shuang were simultaneously taken aback. Madam Chang half-reclined against soft pillows behind her. Though her inner robe concealed her body, a vivid purple and green bruise marred the corner of her eye on her face. Originally a woman with delicate, refined features, this bruise looked shockingly severe. Seeing the shock in the two girls' eyes, Madam Chang appeared slightly uncomfortable. She glanced at Qingniang. "What is the aning of this…"

Pang Jiayan urgently interjected, "Ninth Young Miss knows dicine. I asked her to co treat you, Mother."

Watching Pang Jiayan's earnest expression, Madam Chang's eyes reddened slightly. Turning back to Qin Wan and her sister, she smiled bitterly. "I'm ashad for you two young ladies to see in such a state. It's truly unsightly to receive guests. Most discourteous."

Qin Wan sighed softly. "Please rest assured, Madam. Qin Wan will only perform a physician's duty and will not ask a single question beyond that." She paused, then added, "The Third Young Master's filial heart is touching. However, if you truly refuse, my sixth sister and I shall simply leave."

Madam Chang looked even more embarrassed. She glanced down at Pang Jiayan, then nodded. "Very well. Then I must trouble Ninth Young Miss."

Qin Wan nodded and stepped forward, carefully examining the bruise on Madam Chang's face. After a mont, she asked, "Only wounds? Are you unwell elsewhere too?"

Pang Jiayan said, "Mother's body hurts too."

Madam Chang's face flushed slightly, seeming sowhat nervous. Qin Wan spoke gently, "You need not show everything, Madam. Just a part will suffice. I need to understand the nature of your injuries to prescribe the correct dicine."

Madam Chang hesitated for a mont, then lifted her sleeve.

Madam Chang had exceptionally delicate, fair hands, with slender fingers like peeled scallions, and wrists as white as frost and snow. Yet as she pushed up her sleeve, Qin Wan saw shocking whip marks and large bruises crisscrossing her arm.

Qin Wan pressed her lips together tightly to keep her shock from showing further. After two breaths, she nodded. "Only these two types of wounds?"

The corners of Madam Chang's eyes grew moist as she nodded silently.

Qin Wan considered briefly. "I understand. We brought so of my own ointnts and dicinal materials with us on our journey. I will fetch them and give them to Qingniang. Please have Madam use them as instructed."

Having said this, Qin Wan took a step back. "Take care of yourself, Madam."

Madam Chang's eyes were red-rimd. She nodded and looked at Qingniang. Understanding, Qingniang saw Qin Wan and Qin Shuang out.

While Qin Wan remained composed, Qin Shuang seed as if she'd been struck dumb, her steps sowhat stiff.

Suppressing her thoughts, Qin Wan's gaze swept the room. Through the bedroom window, she caught sight of the small red tower at the back. The elegantly designed, brightly vermilion-lacquered little building indeed seed a perfect fit for the doted-upon Pang Jiayan.

Yet who could have imagined that while the child received endless affection, his mother…

Qin Wan clenched her fist inside her sleeve, her expression turning grave as they left.

They encountered no other servants even after leaving Huiyuan; only the old maidservant from before stood watch at the entrance, looking relieved when she saw them erge. She curtseyed again as they departed.

Only after they had walked through the path west of Huiyuan did Qingniang, who had been silent, finally turn and offer a deep, respectful bow.

"Thank you, both young ladies. This matter…"

"Please be at ease. We will not breathe a word of this to anyone."

Qin Wan's tone was earnest. Tears welled in Qingniang's eyes. "It's too hard for Madam… To endure like this each ti, bearing it all alone, it's too bitter… The young master is older now, and we can no longer fool him with soothing words…"

Qin Wan's lips pressed into a thin line. She wanted to say sothing but ultimately held back, sighing instead. "Please advise Madam to take care of herself. I will go fetch the dicine."

Qingniang nodded. "This servant shouldn't go to your quarters. I'll wait at the pavilion ahead."

Qin Wan gave a soft affirmation and briskly led Qin Shuang back towards their courtyard.

After walking so distance, Qin Shuang finally spoke, her voice trembling. "Was… was that done by Master Pang? All those bruises and whip marks… and she's the Mistress of the household. Who else would dare lay a hand on her?"

Qin Wan shook her head, remaining silent for a mont. Recalling the injuries on Madam Chang's arms, Qin Shuang shrank her shoulders in fear.

Though the Qin Third Household in Jinzhou wasn't of ducal or princely rank, they were still wealthy gentry. Noble girls like them had been coddled since childhood, never subjected to beatings or even minor scrapes. And Madam Chang also ca from a wealthy rchant family. Yet now she lived like this… She had only shown Qin Wan her arm. What about the rest of her body?

No wonder even Pang Jiayan thought his mother was in pain…

"Why doesn't Madam say anything? Why doesn't she return to her parents' ho to seek their help and justice? If this continues, what if she's beaten to death one day? No, even if not killed, living like this would surely shorten her lifespan."

Qin Shuang's nature was impetuous; having thoughts in her heart, she couldn't help voicing them. But Qin Wan understood Madam Chang's predicant. "It's true that Madam cos from a wealthy family, but her natal family has since declined, while the Pang family is now the wealthiest in the northwest. Unless Madam can steel herself for a divorce, the Chang family likely cares too much about face to make a huge fuss. Moreover, they must consider the wider family's interests. I fear no one can restrain Master Pang."

Qin Shuang grit her teeth. "If anyone dares treat like that in the future, I'll surely grab a knife and fight them to the death! What grievance! No, not grievance… it's a life stripped of human dignity."

Qin Wan sighed helplessly. "Lower your voice. If Master Pang finds out we visited Madam, it might bring her even more trouble. Madam's suffering is naturally imnse, but earlier I noticed old injuries beneath the fresh ones on her arm. She has likely endured this many tis already. This isn't a matter for outsiders like us to comnt on. Madam herself must decide."

Qin Shuang understood then. Though inwardly lanting for Madam Chang, she also knew marriages among great families weren't so easily severed by divorce, let alone given Master Pang's current status and position.

They hurried back to their courtyard. Qin Wan first fetched two bottles of prepared ointnts, then wrote out a prescription. Initially, she intended to send the prescription as well, but fearing it might fall into Pang Fuliang's hands and cause trouble, she ultimately only gave Fuling the nas of a few key dicinal ingredients to relay to Qingniang. Having studied under Qin Wan for so long, Fuling quickly morized the ingredients for a single prescription. Once everything was prepared, Fuling took the ointnts to find Qingniang.

Qin Wan and Qin Shuang waited in the courtyard. After the ti it took to drink a cup of tea, Fuling returned slightly breathless.

"Young Miss, all is explained. Rest assured."

A asure of tension eased in Qin Wan's heart. Qin Shuang let out a long sigh. "How pitiable. That young master is so small, yet he already knows his mother suffers such tornt. Who knows if it will affect him?"

"It must," Qin Wan said, her voice low. "It will affect him, one way or another."

Qin Shuang shook her head. "Forget it, forget it. It's best not to marry into too powerful a family in the future. This Master Pang is the wealthiest man in the northwest, yet in private he… It's best to marry soone honest, into a family your own parents' house can hold accountable. That way, if a daughter suffers in her husband's ho, her natal family can support her, right…"

Qin Wan gave a wry smile. "But that's not always the case."

Qin Shuang snorted. "Forget it, why am I thinking of such things? It's probably not for to decide anyway."

Though Qin Shuang seed simple-minded and impulsive, since the events at the Qin manor and her ceasing to be Qin Xiang's shadow, she had indeed matured considerably. She now realized that the Marquis's household inviting them north likely involved other considerations besides kinship.

The murder case in the manor already had everyone on edge; learning of Madam Chang's plight added another layer of gloom to Qin Shuang's and Qin Wan's hearts. When afternoon ca, Qin Wan still hadn't heard any news of Yan Chi's arrival. She only knew Prefect Wang had sent more n into the manor and conducted another round of interrogations of the household staff. anwhile, the Shuangqing Troupe case had been provisionally ruled an accident.

By evening, Qinglan had returned to Clear Radiance Garden.

Since she had been falsely accused, and now that Qingxian and Yang Ying had confessed, she was naturally cleared. The other Shuangqing Troupe mbers taken away the previous night were also released, leaving only Qingxian and Yang Ying still detained at the prefectural yan.

During dinner, the three Qin sisters went to Qin Yan's courtyard to share the al.

Qin Yan had also spent much of the day inquiring about the case at the Moon-Gazing Tower. Now, Qin Shuang was the first to speak up, unable to hold back. "Third Brother, how long before this case is cleared up? Did Prefect Wang make any headway today?"

For so reason, Qin Yan's expression seed even more grave and solemn than before. "Nothing for the ti being. There was a suspicious person in the kitchens, but after investigating, it turned out he was just skimming money from provisions. As for Qingjun's death… there are no strong leads yet."

Qin Shuang gave an "oh." Qin Wan recalled what Yan Chi had said the previous night. "When will Commissioner Liu depart?"

Qin Yan looked at Qin Wan. "I don't know when he's leaving. Why do you ask?"

Qin Wan nodded. "Commissioner Liu doesn't seem afraid of getting involved. Being Master Pang's long-ti friend and also knowing Qingjun… I imagine Prefect Wang questioned him thoroughly…"

"He's already been questioned. His account matches Master Pang's."

Qin Shuang gave a soft, internal humph. Knowing Pang Fuliang could beat his own wife made Qin Shuang deeply distrustful of him.

Qin Wan remarked casually, "Master Pang is a western magnate. Commissioner Liu certainly knows how to befriend him. That way, if he encounters difficulties in his official career later, there's soone to lend a hand."

Qin Yan's brow creased slightly in thought. Qin Wan's words had made him ponder deeply.

The relationship between Liu Renli and Pang Fuliang was more profound than Pang Fuliang had indicated. Though he had always felt so, he lacked concrete proof. Now, hearing Qin Wan's remark, he couldn't help wondering if Liu Renli's visit to the Pang residence was for reasons beyond what was said.

"Third Brother, you must be cautious regarding Commissioner Liu's affairs." Seeing Qin Yan deep in thought, Qin Wan took the opportunity to offer a direct warning.

Before she finished speaking, Qin Xiang, who had been silent, spoke up. "Matters outside are for Third Brother to consider. Ninth Sister, you're overstepping."

Qin Wan offered no rebuttal. Qin Yan, however, seed not to have heard Qin Xiang's words, looking at Qin Wan for a long mont. In his mind, the current Qin Wan was no ordinary young lady. If she had said such a thing, she must have perceived sothing.

Qin Yan nodded. "Naturally, we must exercise caution."

Hearing this, Qin Xiang's face stiffened imdiately. Qin Shuang shot her a look that held a touch of amusent, montarily reminded of her past self. It seed she used to be like that too, thinking she spoke well, while others likely saw her as a foolish girl who overestimated herself.

The thought made Qin Shuang blush faintly. Thankfully, she had learned to temper herself now.

After dinner, Qin Wan returned to her room to continue preparing dicines. Once finished, she retired to bed early. Having learned of Madam Chang's situation that day, her heart couldn't help but fill with many sighs.

In this world, if she were in Madam Chang's place, she would have many concerns as well. Most divorces happened when the wife's family had the power to intervene. To ordinary people, a wife-initiated divorce was seen as a disgrace to the husband. In previous dynasties, only n could repudiate their wives. Though there were many examples of mutual divorce in this dynasty, in the eyes of society, it was almost as if the wife had discarded her husband. Thus, unless absolutely forced, few n agreed to divorce. Not liking one's wife was no great matter; one could take concubines or even establish a secondary wife.

The more Qin Wan thought, the heavier her heart felt. Just as she began to feel sowhat anxious and restless, a faint rustling sound ca from outside the rear window. Qin Wan's heart clenched, and she imdiately sat up. Today, she had not left the window open for Yan Chi; it was securely latched from the inside. Just as Qin Wan was feeling alard, a soft *tap-tap* knock sounded on the window.

If it were a thief, why knock? A suspicion stirred in Qin Wan's heart. She imdiately threw off the covers and got out of bed.

Approaching the window, she asked softly, "Yan Chi?"

A low "Mm" ca from outside. Qin Wan hurriedly opened the window.

Outside stood Yan Chi, tall and poised.

He supported himself on the sill and vaulted inside in one fluid motion, closing the window behind him. Seeing she wore only a light robe, he imdiately said, "Get back into bed."

He pulled her towards the bed as he spoke. Qin Wan whispered, "Why did you co?"

Yan Chi glanced at her. "Why wouldn't I co?"

"Why didn't you co during the day?"

Yan Chi guided her to the bedside, made her get under the quilts, and tucked her in before replying quietly, "Would I have been able to see you if I ca during the day?"

Qin Wan thought for a mont and realized it was true. Though they'd only been apart a day, having Yan Chi before her now naturally filled her heart with a flicker of joy. "Even if you couldn't see , you are, after all, the Investigating Commissioner of the Ministry of Justice. Surely you need to oversee the case during the day?"

Yan Chi adjusted the quilt for her. "I ca precisely to tell you."

Hearing his tone, Qin Wan grew alert. "What is it?"

Seeing her anxious, Yan Chi's voice held a hint of laughter. "What I ntioned to you last night… I've already investigated Liu Renli's past." Qin Wan's eyes lit up. Yan Chi continued, "Eight or nine years ago, Liu Renli served as Deputy Prefect of Xuzhou in the east."

Qin Wan frowned. "Xuzhou? Xuzhou is downstream on the Yan River. It's in the east, while Yuzhou is in the west."

Yan Chi nodded. "Exactly so. However, there is one coincidence: Liu Renli is also from Dingzhou."

It seed Yan Chi had gotten to the bottom of Liu Renli's background within a day. Qin Wan was slightly surprised. "Liu Renli is from Dingzhou? That Qingjun… she also seed to be from Dingzhou?"

Yan Chi nodded again. "Not only that, Pang Fuliang is also from Dingzhou, though he later chose to establish himself in Yuzhou."

Though Dingzhou wasn't far from Yuzhou, why had Pang Fuliang co to Yuzhou?

Yet that wasn't the most crucial point. Qin Wan frowned. "If the three of them are fellow townsn, why didn't Pang Fuliang ntion it? Fellow townsn share a bond. It would be perfectly reasonable for Pang Fuliang to befriend them on that basis."

Yan Chi agreed. "Precisely. I haven't yet sent anyone to investigate Qingjun's residence in Dingzhou…"

Naturally, Qin Wan knew one day wasn't enough to fully uncover details about Dingzhou. She thought for a mont and suddenly rembered sothing. "Right, Qingjun may be dead, but I recall she had a senior sister back then."

Yan Chi recalled it too. "You an this senior sister might know what Qingjun's exact relationship with Pang Fuliang was?"

Qin Wan nodded. "Wasn't it said that senior sister married? Even if she did marry, they wouldn't have completely lost contact. Or perhaps her senior sister knows who might have held a grudge against her?"

The dead person was Qingjun. Pang Fuliang said she was from Dingzhou and had no close relatives left, but Qin Wan knew of at least this one person. Being a senior sister, she must know more.

"I understand your aning. I'll have soone investigate." He paused briefly, then added, "The Shuangqing Troupe mbers are still here in the manor. Tomorrow, we can have Prefect Wang question them directly."

Qin Wan gave a soft "Mm." "Both cases involve the Shuangqing Troupe."

Saying this, Qin Wan suddenly felt it was all too coincidental. "Two people died in succession: one the current troupe leader, the other the forr troupe leader. If it weren't for the fact that Qingli's case hasn't yet been confird as murder, I'd almost think soone was targeting the Shuangqing Troupe for revenge…"

Yan Chi narrowed his eyes slightly. "Qingli's case is still considered an accident for now. If it's not an accident, then that possibility certainly exists."

Qin Wan nodded, then said, "I've already hinted to Third Brother about what you said regarding Liu Renli. I believe he will be cautious."

"All for your sake. Otherwise, I wouldn't care what happens to the Marquis's household."

Qin Wan pondered for a mont. "Is the Marquis's household trying to win supporters for the Crown Prince?"

Yan Chi nodded. "You likely already saw that when you watched us play chess last ti…"

"What are your thoughts on that?" Qin Wan asked.

"My thoughts… Since ancient tis, civil officials govern, military generals defend the state. In court, civil officials wield influence, while military leaders hold vital power over troops. For now, I have no intention, nor can I let His Majesty think I have any intention."

Yan Chi's words were matter-of-fact, but Qin Wan's heart tightened. The current Emperor was in the pri of life. Though a Crown Prince had been established, that didn't an the Crown Prince currently held sway in court. Since ancient tis, many Crown Princes had been deposed, and many established Crown Princes, eager to ascend the throne sooner, had staged coups. Prince Rui was the commander of the Western Frontier Army. Though Yan Chi had returned to the capital, he was still the young commander. If Yan Chi responded to Qin Yan's overtures and aligned himself with the Crown Prince, it was easy to imagine how wary the current Emperor would beco.

Thus, the only safe course for Yan Chi was to remain inactive, maintaining a posture of loyalty solely to the current Emperor.

Understanding this, Qin Wan felt a chill. That day when Qin Yan tried to recruit Yan Chi, she hadn't considered all these layers. Now comprehending the situation, she realized Yan Chi's ambiguous attitude that day was indeed deeply aningful.

"So that's how it is. I was thinking too simplistically."

"How were you thinking?"

"That day, seeing your ambiguous stance, I rely thought you didn't wish to attach yourself to the Crown Prince."

Hearing this, Yan Chi's lips curved slightly. "Why? The Crown Prince is the heir apparent, the future Emperor."

Qin Wan pressed her lips together montarily. "Though the Crown Prince is the Crown Prince, in my heart, you are the Heir Apparent of Prince Rui, illustrious in military achievent. Within or outside the court, no one can force you to do anything."

Hearing Qin Wan say this, Yan Chi fell silent for a mont.

Qin Wan didn't understand his silence. After a pause, Yan Chi raised his hand to caress her cheek, his tone carrying a certain weight. "Suddenly, I don't want you to go to the capital…"

"Hmm?" After waiting half the day, this was what he said.

Yan Chi leaned closer, pulling Qin Wan into his embrace. "You see others being reverent in front of , yet I am not immune to being pressured, especially within the Imperial City. Outwardly splendid and opulent, behind the scenes countless hands stir the waters. Everyone who has a say there holds bargaining chips. The intrigue and layers of mist there are a hundred tis more difficult to discern than any suspicious case. Moreover, it's fraught with hidden dangers; you never know how many hidden arrows are aid at you."

Yan Chi's words caused Qin Wan's heart to tighten. Instinctively, she wrapped her arms around his waist.

Sensing her movent, Yan Chi lowered his head and kissed the tip of her ear. "Frightened?"

Qin Wan shook her head. "I had already considered so of it, though naturally not as clearly as you know."

Yan Chi gently stroked her back. "Take what I just said with a grain of salt. Maintain necessary vigilance, but leave the rest to ."

Qin Wan's sowhat anxious heart relaxed. Naturally, she trusted him, even though he had just said he wasn't impervious to constraints. Several tis, she had escaped death precisely because of Yan Chi. Her trust wasn't in Yan Chi having overwhelming power; it was in his unwavering commitnt to her.

"I know. I trust you."

Qin Wan's voice was soft, especially soul-stirring in this cold, wind-howling night. Yan Chi tightened his embrace, stroking the crown of her head. There was one more thing he hadn't said: The capital was filled with hidden dragons and crouching tigers, but also teed with all sorts of people. He didn't know how the Marquis's household would arrange Qin Wan's future, but he was certain more eyes would fall upon Qin Wan.

This thought filled him with both pride and joy, and also with considerable annoyance and displeasure.

"Here, take this."

Just as Yan Chi was thinking this, he felt sothing being pressed into his arms.

He imdiately drew back slightly and took out the object. The mont he touched it, he knew what it was.

"The dicine sachet is ready?" Yan Chi said, bringing the sachet to his nose.

Though it contained dicinal herbs, the scent was not heavy at all; rather, it carried a fresh, grassy fragrance. After a couple of whiffs, Yan Chi felt his mind exceptionally clear and refreshed.

"It's ready. The main ingredients are for calming the spirit."

Yan Chi tucked the sachet back into his robe and pulled Qin Wan into a tight embrace. "Anything you make is good."

A silent smile curved Qin Wan's lips. Yan Chi suddenly asked, "Who else has one?"

Unaware, Qin Wan replied, "Fuling's was made earlier. This ti, I'm also making ones for Bai Ying and Sixth Sister. They're almost done. For the others, I'll make them slowly later…"

Yan Chi's breathing hitched slightly. "That little maid of yours we can set aside. Why are you making one for that Qin Sixth? And one for Bai Ying? You want to use the sa dicine sachet as my forr subordinate?"

Though Yan Chi kept his voice low, the annoyance in it was palpable.

Qin Wan was taken aback. "But… I'm almost finished with them…"

Yan Chi lowered his head and planted a firm kiss on her cheek. "Give them to . All of them!"

The next morning, Qingniang personally led kitchen servants to deliver breakfast.

"Madam said the case in the manor must have tired the Heir Apparent and you three young ladies. So today, she specially prepared so soups. Not knowing what you young ladies prefer, we also ordered so cakes from the most famous bakery in Yuzhou City."

As Qingniang spoke, the servants laid out a table full of dishes and pastries. Qin Yan raised an eyebrow as he watched the spread. "This is truly too sumptuous. Please convey our thanks for Madam's kindness."

Qingniang smiled and waved dismissively. "Not at all, not at all. Please enjoy at your leisure."

Qin Wan and Qin Shuang stood aside, receiving Qingniang's particularly grateful glance. They imdiately understood that Madam Chang must have improved after using the dicine. After Qingniang left, the siblings sat down to eat.

Qin Yan remarked with so surprise, "Today is quite different from previous days."

Pang Fuliang had never dared be negligent in hosting Qin Yan and his sisters; daily als were always exquisite. But today's spread had far exceeded the usual scale, leaving Qin Yan sowhat puzzled. Halfway through the al, Qin Yan said, "Who knows how long until this case is solved? We shouldn't delay too long. Let's wait two more days. If there's still no result by then, we'll depart."

In truth, it had already been largely proven that Qin Yan and the others had nothing to do with Qingjun's death. But since they'd chosen to stay, it was best to wait for so conclusion. Moreover, Qin Yan was most concerned about Liu Renli's true nature, which was of paramount importance. And now, Qin Yan seed to have changed his mind about Liu Renli, so there was naturally no need to wait much longer. "That would be best…" Qin Shuang clearly approved of this arrangent!

Qin Wan didn't comnt, but naturally wouldn't object. However, she was wondering when Yan Chi planned to return to the capital.

His position as Investigating Commissioner of the Ministry of Justice wasn't crucial, yet it was bestowed by the Emperor himself. Since he'd started investigating this case, wouldn't he have to see it through, just like in Jinzhou?

"Ninth Sister?" Qin Shuang suddenly exclaid.

Qin Wan snapped back to attention, looking at Qin Shuang. Qin Shuang said helplessly, "What are you thinking about? Third Brother was talking to you!"

Qin Wan quickly turned to Qin Yan. Qin Yan looked at her with concern. "Are you unwell?"

Qin Wan forced a slight smile and shook her head. "No, I just… perhaps didn't sleep well."

Qin Yan then said, "I was telling you not to stay cooped up in the courtyard all day. If you find it dull, go out for a stroll with Sixth Sister. The manor has a rather somber air lately."

A place where soone died naturally felt somber. Qin Yan ant well. Qin Wan nodded. "Don't worry, Third Brother. If I wish to go out, I will."

After breakfast, Qin Shuang indeed grew restless and wanted to go out. But as they reached the courtyard gate, they saw Pang Jiayan standing outside holding a box, with Qingniang behind him. Seeing Qin Wan erge, Qingniang hurriedly bowed.

Qin Wan was surprised. "Why are you here?"

Qingniang smiled. "The Third Young Master has co to deliver a gift… He enjoys playing with you two young ladies."

Though Qingniang didn't elaborate, it was likely because Madam Chang's condition had improved after using the dicine. Pang Jiayan had co personally, and for such a small child to carry such a large box seed quite a burden.

Qin Wan quickly said, "Please co in then."

Pang Jiayan didn't speak, simply followed Qin Wan inside, still clutching the box.

Entering the room, Fuling and Bai Ying watched curiously as Pang Jiayan placed the large box on the table in the main room with a soft *thump*, then opened it with a click.

Inside, the box was filled with a dazzling array of small toys. Pang Jiayan's favorite little golden carriage was prominently displayed. Alongside it were a golden slingshot, a jade nine-linked ring, clay figurines, a cloth tiger… all children's playthings. For a mont, Qin Wan and the others couldn't help but smile.

Seeing their smiles, Pang Jiayan lifted his chin. "You, pick first."

He pointed at Qin Wan. Qin Wan chuckled and stepped forward. "Such treasures. Is the Third Young Master truly willing? You'd part with this carriage too?"

Pang Jiayan cast an unwilling glance at the carriage, then forcibly averted his gaze. "Take it if you want!"

Qin Wan picked up the carriage. Pang Jiayan's eyes indeed darted back to it quickly, but then he seed determined not to show reluctance and looked away again. Qin Wan put the carriage down and began examining the items one by one. Qin Shuang, finding it amusing, also stepped closer. "Oh, I played with a nine-linked ring when I was little, but I could never solve it…"

Qin Wan only looked without speaking, but Qin Shuang chattered on. "What's this?" Qin Shuang picked up a silver cylindrical object.

Pang Jiayan frowned. "A 'Thousand-Li Eye'..."

"Huh?" Hearing "eye," Qin Shuang held it up to her eye and looked at Pang Jiayan through it. Instantly, she gasped and dropped the cylinder back into the box. "Heavens! His face beca so huge! Truly frightening!"

She then picked up several figurines. "Oh, these are remarkably lifelike."

"Qingniang made those herself," Pang Jiayan said with a touch of pride.

Qin Wan glanced over. They were figurines of acrobats: one wielding swords, another swallowing blades and spitting fire. Each figurine was only half a palm high, yet their clothing, expressions, and poses were all different, quite fascinating.

Qin Shuang looked them over and set them down. "And what's this?"

She picked up a square board with square "pieces" tightly fitted together, unable to be removed but able to slide left, right, up, and down. The pieces bore different colors and painted figures. The entire board had exactly one empty space.

Pang Jiayan glanced at it. "That's a 'Hua Rong Dao' sliding puzzle." He added, "I'll tell you the rules. If you can make 'Cao Cao' escape, I'll let you pick sothing too!"

Qin Shuang was taken aback. So, he wasn't letting her pick outright… She scanned Pang Jiayan's box, wanting to tease him a bit and not let this little fellow look down on her. She lifted her chin. "Agreed!"
