As for who the other party is and what they are plotting, Song Wei is currently in a fog, unable to make sense of it.
Seeing Song Wei silent, Wen Wan asked him, "Husband, could it be that you’ve made too many enemies in the court, and soone is afraid to deal with you openly, planning to use a covert sche instead?"
"I don’t rule out that possibility, but..." Song Wei shifted his tone, "I always feel things aren’t as simple as they seem. Based on Wei Qian losing track of Wang Xiaolang, it’s clear the opponent is not weak. There might be so underlying conspiracy."
Hearing the word "conspiracy," Wen Wan imdiately got goosebumps. Though the Capital is vast, the waters here are murky; if one doesn’t mix well, they are destined to be bullied forever and live under soone else’s thumb. If one blends too well, they’ll be targeted continuously, with endless tricks. These people truly are idle, always fixating on others.
"Husband, do you not know who is trying to deal with you?" Wen Wan yawned, her voice growing weaker.
"I don’t know for now." Saying this, Song Wei subconsciously glanced at his young wife and, seeing her brows and eyes filled with weariness, gently tucked her hands into the blanket before extinguishing the lamp and lying down beside her.
...
After breakfast the next day, the kitchen routinely sent over lunch for Song Wei.
Song Wei was washing his hands and, after drying them, turned around. His gaze landed on the food box before shifting to Wen Wan, "Did you play any tricks today?"
Wen Wan was still drinking porridge and lifted her head to et the man’s affectionate gaze. She raised her brows, "You can try and find out, right?"
"Looks like I must co to your room tonight to read."
Wen Wan didn’t miss the pampering in his tone; she smiled sweetly, "Always welco."
Shortly after Song Wei left, Jinbao arrived. He had just been in the outer courtyard accompanying Song Yuanbao for breakfast; there was still an incense stick’s hour before class.
The little fellow sat on the kang after entering, not saying a word, looking very depressed.
Wen Wan asked him what was wrong.
Jinbao looked up, puzzled, "Mother, have you ever seen blue eyes?"
Wen Wan: "???"
"I saw them yesterday when grandpa and I went out to shovel snow." Jinbao said, "Right on the street, Aunt Lin was carrying him."
After speaking, the little guy asked again, "Aunt Lin’s eyes are black, why would she have a blue-eyed brother?"
Wen Wan was bewildered by her son’s words, "Jinbao, what nonsense are you muttering, what blue eyes, what brother? Where would Aunt Lin get a son?"
"There is one." Jinbao asserted, "I really saw him yesterday."
Wen Wan still didn’t understand. She refrained from asking further, sent a calling card to the Governor Mansion, and after Jinbao left for class, she changed clothes, took Yun Cai and Linglong, and rode a carriage directly to the Governor Mansion.
Lin Xiaoyue arranged for the head maid Jin Zhi to greet them. As Wen Wan entered the main courtyard, she imdiately saw a strange face - a little guy of about two with honey-colored skin, a high nose bridge, and slightly steel blue eyes. His features were deeper than those of the Great Chu citizens. Though only two, he already showed a wild nature, making it easy to imagine him growing into a uniquely handso man.
The steel blue eyes were a first for Wen Wan this lifeti; her heart was greatly shaken. She asked Jin Zhi, "Who is this little fellow?"
Jin Zhi replied, "His na is Amuer, brought back by Mr. Qi."
Wen Wan: "..."
Probably influenced by her little wife at ho these days, Wen Wan’s first reaction: could this young boy be Su Qing’s child with another woman from West Yue?
After all, calculating the ti, it’s not impossible.
However, Wen Wan didn’t dare to ask directly but crouched down wanting to hold him instead.
Unexpectedly, Amuer refused to let her hold him, took two steps back, couldn’t stand steady, and fell on his bottom.
Looking at the unfamiliar won across, Amuer suddenly felt aggrieved and opened his little mouth to cry aloud.
Hearing the commotion inside, Lin Xiaoyue hurried out, seeing Amuer sitting on the ground, she frowned and quickly ca to lift him, "What’s wrong?"
Amuer didn’t want her to touch him and only cried without speaking.
Seeing her friend’s frustrated look, Wen Wan couldn’t help but ask, "Lin Xiaoyue, who exactly is he?"
"I don’t know either."
Wen Wan said, "I heard from Jin Zhi that he’s brought back by Mr. Qi?"
"That’s why I’m uncertain of who he really is." Lin Xiaoyue sighed, "Mr. Qi told he was found while cleaning the battlefield after the war, and feeling sorry for him, brought him back."
Wen Wan looked at her, "You wouldn’t suspect this being Mr. Qi’s child with a West Yue woman, would you?"
Upon hearing this, Lin Xiaoyue blushed and chuckled, "Actually, the day Mr. Qi returned to the Capital when I first saw Amuer, I indeed had such thoughts, but upon reflection, it seems highly unlikely."
"Since you think it’s impossible, why still dwell on it?"
"Mr. Qi plans to keep him in our ho." Lin Xiaoyue said, "Judging by the looks, he’s determined to adopt him as a foster son."
Seeing Lin Xiaoyue lower her lashes, Wen Wan imdiately understood her concern.
After Su Qing went on campaign, Lin Xiaoyue discovered she was pregnant, but the baby died in the womb before delivery.
The induced baby had already shown to be a boy.
Having a son was Lin Xiaoyue’s emotional knot, and now Su Qing returned with an exotic "son," it’s no wonder Lin Xiaoyue felt unhappy.
Wen Wan advised, "Since he’s a child made holess by war, it’s quite pitiable, adopt him as your own. Besides, it doesn’t stop you from giving him another son."
Lin Xiaoyue sighed again, "At first, I couldn’t accept it. But later, I thought, maybe it’s truly Heaven’s compensation for , letting pick up a son after losing one, so I’ve been trying to treat him as my own. But he only clings to Mr. Qi, never acknowledging . What should I do, Wen Wan, I feel so defeated."
Wen Wan asked her, "Does he understand when you speak?"
Lin Xiaoyue hesitated, "I’m not quite sure."
"That’s just it." Wen Wan explained, "West Yue’s language differs from Great Chu’s. Mr. Qi has spent many years there and has picked up so of it. So Amuer understands him, but doesn’t understand us. He can’t speak our language either. It’s no wonder he doesn’t acknowledge you."
Lin Xiaoyue hadn’t considered this problem; she always thought a two-year-old was at the age for learning to speak and figured she could teach him to imitate.
Thinking of this, Lin Xiaoyue lowered her gaze to the young boy and called out, "Amuer."
He didn’t respond, just watched her warily.
"I have sothing tasty here; do you want it?" Lin Xiaoyue didn’t gesture, trying to test with words.
The little fellow indeed didn’t understand, blinking his steel blue eyes, without waiting for Lin Xiaoyue to say anything more, he turned straight around and ran forward. Yet, due to the slippery floor, he stumbled after a few steps but didn’t cry, just got up and continued running.
Watching him head inside, Lin Xiaoyue then moved her gaze to Wen Wan, "Why did you suddenly think of visiting us?"
"Yesterday Jinbao went out with his grandfather to shovel snow, and upon returning, told he saw you holding a blue-eyed brother. I was puzzled wondering when your black eyes gave birth to blue eyes, so I ca over first thing this morning to check." Wen Wan replied truthfully.
Lin Xiaoyue awkwardly chuckled, "He just arrived in Great Chu, isn’t accustod to many things. Yesterday, I took him out for a walk; the ground was too slippery, and he couldn’t step steadily, so I had to carry him."
