Chapter 172: 172. Floor 1: Awakening the law of Resonance
The light faded.
Owen stood in a vast chamber carved from crystalline stone. The walls pulsed with a violet light that was rhythmic like a heartbeat. The ceiling stretched impossibly high, disappearing into darkness. The floor beneath his boots was smooth, reflective, showing his own image distorted and wavering.
He wasn’t alone.
Twenty other hunters materialized around him, scattered across the chamber. Most were humanoid. A few weren’t. One was a being made entirely of interlocking geotric shapes that rotated slowly. Another was a reptilian with four arms and a tail that crackled with static.
Everyone’s CE signatures read between one and three-stars. It seed to be that the dungeon had sorted them.
Then a voice echoed through the chamber in a way that was not spoken, but felt. It resonated in Owen’s chest, in his bones.
"Welco to the Argentus Dungeon. Floor 1 of 50. Objective: Survive. Rewards scale with contribution. Death is permanent. Begin."
Then the chamber’s center erupted.
The floor cracked. Light bled through the fissures. Then things crawled out.
Resonance Constructs.
They weren’t alive in the traditional sense. They were manifestations of the dungeon’s law. Humanoid shapes made of crystalline energy, their bodies translucent, pulsing with the sa violet light as the walls. No faces. No features. Just smooth, featureless heads and limbs that moved with unnatural precision.
Twenty constructs. One for each hunter.
Owen’s Dragon’s Eye activated. He scanned the nearest one.
[Resonance Construct - Tier 5, One-Star]
[Ability: Resonance Echo - Amplifies the target’s last attack and reflects it back]
His jaw tightened. "Amplifies and reflects? Great"
The construct lunged.
Owen dodged left, using Montum Shift. CE cost: 5. The construct’s fist passed through the space he’d occupied, leaving a trail of violet light.
It didn’t stop. It pivoted, faster than expected, and swung again.
Owen blocked with his forearm. The gauntlets absorbed most of the impact, but the force still drove him back three ters.
"Aw, damn!"
Around him, the other hunters engaged their own constructs. Energy blasts filled the chamber. Blades clashed against crystalline limbs. One hunter—a four-ard being—fought with coordinated strikes, each arm attacking from a different angle.
Another hunter, a winged creature similar to Veyra but smaller, hovered above its construct, firing energy bolts from a distance.
Owen reset his stance.
The construct charged again. This ti, Owen didn’t dodge. He t it head-on.
He threw a 20 CE punch. Cosmic Impact Fist. His fist connected with the construct’s chest.
CRACK!
The construct staggered. Cracks spread across its torso. But then it pulsed.
The cracks sealed.
And it swung back.
Owen barely dodged. The construct’s fist grazed his shoulder. Pain flared. His CE dropped to 480. Ultra-Regeneration kicked in, costing 8 CE to heal the damage.
"Oh fucking hell, It’s learning and Adapting"
He couldn’t afford to trade blows. Not yet.
Owen circled the construct, forcing it to turn, to chase. He threw low-CE jabs—10 CE each—testing its defenses. Each hit landed. Each ti, the construct cracked, then sealed.
But Owen noticed sothing.
The sealing was slower each ti. Just a fraction of a second, but slower.
"It has a limit."
He feinted left, then struck right. 30 CE to its knee. The joint cracked. The construct stumbled.
Owen didn’t wait. He followed with another 30 CE punch to its torso. Then another to its head.
CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!
The construct shattered.
Its body dissolved into motes of violet light that drifted upward, absorbed by the chamber’s ceiling.
[Floor 1 - Construct defeated]
[Contribution: 1/20]
Owen exhaled. His CE sat at 422. He’d spent 78 total. Not bad. But not perfect.
Around him, other hunters were finishing their fights. The four-ard being crushed its construct with coordinated strikes. The winged hunter’s energy bolts overwheld its target.
Then the chamber pulsed.
A pedestal rose from the floor at the chamber’s center. On it, a single orb floated. Grade 2 Cosmic Core.
The four-ard hunter moved toward it first.
But so did another hunter—a hulking reptilian with scarred scales.
They reached the pedestal at the sa ti.
The reptilian growled. "I had the most kills."
The four-ard hunter’s voice was calm. "Contribution is asured by efficiency, not volu."
"Bullshit."
The tension in the chamber spiked.
Owen watched from the edge.
Then the winged hunter spoke. Her voice was sharp, cutting. "Split it. Or fight over it and waste energy before floor 2."
The reptilian snarled. But he stepped back.
The four-ard hunter took the core, examined it, then broke it in half. He handed one half to the reptilian.
The tension eased.
Owen relaxed slightly.
The chamber’s walls pulsed again. A doorway opened at the far end, leading deeper into the dungeon.
"Floor 1 complete. Proceed to Floor 2."
The hunters moved toward the doorway.
Owen followed, his CE core already pulling ambient energy from the chamber. 425. 428. 430.
Slow. But steady.
Veyra appeared beside him. Her wings folded tight against her back. "Not bad, False Fist. You actually survived."
"Did you expect
not to?"
She smirked. "Honestly? A little."
They passed through the doorway.
---
Floor 2 was different.
The chamber was smaller. Darker. The walls didn’t pulse. They vibrated, low and constant, a hum that made Owen’s cautioun tense.
Fifteen hunters remained now now. Five had stayed behind on Floor 1, either too injured or too cautious to continue.
The voice echoed again.
"Floor 2 of 50. Objective: Adapt. Resonance Pressure active. CE expenditure increased by 50%. Begin."
Owen felt it imdiately.
His CE core resisted. Every technique, every movent cost more. A Montum Shift that should cost 5 CE now cost 7. A 20 CE punch now cost 30.
"Adapt... Right"
The floor cracked and new constructs erged.
[Resonance Construct - Tier 5, Two-Star]
Twenty constructs. For fifteen hunters.
Soone was going to face two at once.
Owen’s luck held. One construct locked onto him.
But the reptilian hunter from Floor 1 wasn’t so fortunate. Two constructs converged on him.
He roared, swinging wild punches. His CE flared, burning through reserves. But the constructs adapted, blocking, countering.
The other hunters didn’t help. They focused on their own fights.
Owen fought his construct carefully. He conserved CE. No wasted movents. No unnecessary strikes. Just enough to damage, to slow, to survive.
The construct swung. Owen dodged, 7 CE for Montum Shift. It swung again. He blocked, absorbing the impact with his gauntlets.
Then he struck. 30 CE punch to its torso. 45 CE total cost.
CRACK!
The construct staggered.
Owen struck again. Another 45 CE.
The construct shattered.
[Floor 2 - Construct defeated]
[Contribution: 1/20]
His CE: 338.
Across the chamber, the reptilian hunter fell.
One construct pinned him. The other drove a crystalline fist through his chest.
The hunter’s body dissolved into light. Gone.
The two constructs turned toward the nearest hunter.
Veyra.
She cursed, her wings flaring. She fired energy bolts, fast, precise. One construct fell. But the second closed the distance.
Owen moved without thinking.
Montum Shift. 7 CE. He crossed the chamber, intercepting the construct before it reached Veyra.
He drove a 60 CE punch (90 total cost) into its back.
CRACK!
The construct turned, ignoring Veyra and now focusing on Owen.
"Great. Now I’m the target."
Veyra didn’t hesitate. She fired three bolts into its exposed back.
The construct shattered.
She landed beside Owen, breathing hard. "Thanks."
"Don’t ntion it."
The chamber pulsed. Another pedestal rose. Two cores this ti.
The four-ard hunter took one. Veyra took the other.
She tossed it to Owen. "We’re even."
He caught it. Grade 2. He absorbed it imdiately. His CE rose: 338 → 368 → 398.
The doorway opened.
"Floor 2 complete. Proceed to Floor 3."
Twelve hunters remained.
Owen followed them through.
His CE core pulsed at 398. The cost increase was brutal. But manageable.
For now...
