Chapter 145: Chapter 132: Lin Mao and Ling Yu’Er

"Come on, come on, everyone come in..." Mr. Xie was quite quick. He managed to find over a dozen children for him so swiftly.

There were boys and girls, the oldest being eleven or twelve, and the youngest just four or five.

They lined up in front of Lin Miao.

"Call the owner."

"Owner." They were all just kids, and seeing Lin Miao naturally made them nervous, scared, and timid, all of which were reflected on their innocent faces.

"What’s your name?" Lin Miao asked the tallest boy who seemed to be the oldest; he looked slightly mature, with a touch of defiance on his face, making him look like the leader of the boys.

"They call me Mao."

"Mao, that’s an interesting name. Do you have a last name?" Lin Miao couldn’t help but smile, this kid had quite a personality.

Mr. Xie directly picked up a group of children to bring back, no wonder he found so many so quickly.

This guy sure knows how to make things easy.

But he’s also smart, having an older kid lead a bunch of younger ones. If they’re trained well, it’s much easier than picking them one by one from outside and letting them choose a leader among themselves.

Of course, that’s the advantage because it makes things easier for oneself. But the downside is that these kids, when they grow up, might have stronger feelings for their leader than for him, their master.

But that’s a matter for the future. If he can’t even win over these dozen or so little brats, then why would they follow him loyally in the future?

"Little girl, how about you?" Lin Miao asked the oldest girl among them.

"Owner, my name is Yu’Er." The little girl was a bit reserved, but her answer was clear and precise, clearly not an ordinary household girl.

"Yu, as in rain?"

"No, it’s Yu as in taro." The little girl spoke clearly and methodically.

"Have you studied before?"

"I learned from my father when I was little." Yu’Er nodded, a hint of sadness flashing in her eyes, obviously a girl with a story.

"Yu’Er, how old are you?"

"Ten."

"Are these your sisters?"

"No, some of them beg with me, and some I picked up..."

"You’re quite something, picking up people?"

"Owner..." Mr. Xie leaned over to Lin Miao’s ear, explaining in a low voice.

Lin Miao exclaimed in surprise, "There’s such a thing."

"This isn’t common in other squares, but in Xiuyue Square, it’s all too common. You don’t know how many children are strangled or drowned every year. Some can’t bear to do it themselves, so they give them away or abandon them. Of these kids, at least half come from such backgrounds. These are the ones who survived, who knows how many didn’t." Mr. Xie explained regretfully.

"Having children and not raising them, these people don’t deserve to be parents." Lin Miao clenched his fist slightly, beneath the prosperity and beauty of this world lay such ugliness, and he finally saw it.

"How many of these children are there?"

"Dozens, I picked some of the ones you might like according to your criteria to bring over."

"I want all of these children. Go and find a slightly bigger house outside the city, the bigger the better..."

Lin Miao quickly made a decision to adopt these children and nurture them into something great.

"Owner, that will cost a lot of money?" Mr. Xie reminded Lin Miao, adopting these kids wouldn’t be cheap.

"Do as I say, don’t worry about the money."

"Mao, Yu’Er, are you two willing to live here and live with me in the future?" Lin Miao turned to the two older kids and asked.

"Can you teach me martial arts?" Mao asked.

"You want to learn martial arts?"

"Yes."

"Why do you want to learn martial arts?"

"To beat bad people, protect my brothers and sisters, give them a stable home, and live a good life!" Mao replied.

"Very good, ambitious!" Lin Miao smiled faintly, nodding. The fact that Mao could say such words showed he had a chivalrous heart, which resonated with Lin Miao.

"And you, Yu’Er, what do you want to learn?" Lin Miao asked the girl named Yu’Er.

"I want to study, learn medicine, and when I grow up, I want to heal people and help many more." Yu’Er was taken aback for a moment, then said.

Lin Miao glanced at Mr. Xie, as if to ask if he had taught this or revealed any information.

Mr. Xie shook his head quickly, not knowing what Lin Miao planned to do with adopting the children, so how could he have told them anything beforehand?

"Learning martial arts and medicine is tough, Mao, Yu’Er, you must be sure about it."

"Yes." The two nodded simultaneously. When they came, Mr. Xie had already told them that a kind person was willing to take them in, give them food, and clothes, and let them live a good life.

Of course, they also knew this required an exchange, but they weren’t quite sure what that exchange was yet.

But it was way better than having nothing to eat, no clothes to wear, freezing or starving to death on the streets.

"Neither of you has a surname, right?"

Mao nodded, he truly didn’t know his surname, having been out for so long and mixed for so long, he had forgotten even if he had one.

But the girl was hesitant for a moment; knowing how to read, she was evidently more mature than Mao.

"Owner, I have a surname, my surname is Ling."

"Lin, as in two trees Lin?" Lin Miao exclaimed in surprise, was there really such a pleasant surprise?

"No, it’s Ling as in soaring above the skies." Yu’Er corrected him.

"Oh, so it’s that Ling, okay then, let’s not change it, you can keep using that surname." Lin Miao initially thought of giving everyone his surname, but then thought it didn’t represent much, better to keep it, "Mao, from now on, you’ll take my surname, consider yourself adopted by me, and be called Lin Mao, I think that name suits you well."
