Chapter 45: It’s him?!
"Wait. Adeline."
Just as they were about to enter the carriage they heard a voice asking them to stop.
Victoria ran out of the store to catch up.
"I want you to co to our house soday."
Adeline didn’t expect that she would get an invitation considering how awkward their first eting was. Victoria on the other hand had a completely different perspective. She didn’t shut her out imdiately, she understood her, and therefore, Adeline is her friend.
And what do you do with friends? You invite them over to your house.
"I will take you up on that offer, but for now, go inside. Your sister will be worried."
With the usual blank expression on her face, she nodded and went back inside.
"You have a knack for attracting weird people." Aaron laughed.
Dimitri’s eyebrows furrowed, was he weird too?
"What does that say about you, brother?"
Was she calling him weird too? Now Aaron’s eyebrows furrowed.
Adeline humphed and took her seat. This street was filled with stores catering to the noble ladies, they had to go further down the road to reach the n’s section.
Ever since she ca to this world, she was surrounded by boys. Her brothers, the male leads, and so on. It was a breath of fresh air to get a new female friend.
"What am I, then? A fish?"
’You finally showed up after hiding. Go away. Life was peaceful without you.’
Adeline was still mad at the Goddess from the last ti.
"C’mon don’t be like that. We are friends! And as a friend, I should say that the purple dress looked absolutely lovely on you."
’Flattery won’t get you anywhere.’ She said that but she felt pleased with the complint she received. She did look cute, didn’t she? Her face was filled with pride.
"It isn’t flattery. It is the truth!"
’Cough, why did you contact ? Did sothing happen?’
"Actually yes. This is sothing important. I found an anomaly in the story... The fabric of this universe... There are things, well, people that shouldn’t be here."
’What are you saying? Are there other people like
who got pulled into this world?’ If that was true, Adeline could possibly team up with them.
"No, I already told you. You are the only one I pulled into the story! I am not powerful enough to locate this person. Just be careful!"
First, she warned her about changing the plot too much, and now this. Quite the unreliable Goddess wasn’t she? Adeline shook her head.
’Don’t worry, with you watching over
nothing will happen.’
"Hehehe."
Although they had a fight, they were back to normal now. While Aaron talked to Dimitri about how to act in a clothing store, Adeline looked out the window. This was a new part of town for her too, she wasn’t allowed to go outside willy-nilly.
"What?!" Adeline smushed herself against the window to get a closer look.
White hair... That was Edward, wasn’t it? The carriage moved too fast and she couldn’t spot him again. It felt like an illusion. The first ti she saw him, she knew he was ominous. The book didn’t have one nice thing to say about him.
This ti when she ’saw’ him... She could feel a sense of foreboding. It was much stronger than what she felt when she t Cassian again.
"Linny! Sit down, you’ll get hurt."
"Oh-"
Aaron almost pulled her hand to get her seated. She took her seat and fiddled with her fingers. What she saw with Cassian were flashbacks from the previous Adeline’s life... The original story.
What she felt when she saw Edward was very different. Her body reacted with fear when she t Cassian but the feeling of discomfort and terror she felt when she saw Edward radiated from her soul. She felt shaken to her core.
Why? In the original story, there was barely any overlap between them. Why did her heart get heavy upon seeing Edward?
The clothing store was familiar with Aaron and his asurents, they were regulars after all. Aaron lent Dimitri his old clothes so that he wouldn’t be looked down upon. The prejudice against commoners is present though not as strong as that against refugees.
"So, who is this?" Aaron ran into one of his friends in the store.
"My sister?"
"I know that." He rolled his eyes, "I’m talking about that kid."
Sohow Adeline sensed that sothing was up. She had been protective of Dimitri ever since she took him in. She would never let soone mistreat him or call him a servant.
She turned to look at this ’friend’ of Aaron’s.
"He’s a distant cousin. He will be staying with us from now on."
Aaron carefully observed this friend’s reaction. They were only surface-level friends, they t during a social gathering, and amidst the chaos and crowd, they found each other’s company pleasing. He would never want to be friends with a shallow person.
"The Capital is a new place for him, right? Although it seems daunting at first, it’s a pretty nice place."
Maybe this friend wasn’t so bad after all. He spoke with concern and kindness. Aaron could deal with fake friends but he wasn’t going to subject his sister to it. So only after he gives his friends a pass can they et his family.
"Linny, this is my friend Ivan."
Adeline got up to show respect and introduced herself, "Adeline Kendrick."
"I finally got to et the sister you can’t stop gushing about. Of course, if I had such a cute sister I wouldn’t shut up either. All I have are noisy brothers."
Adeline smiled wickedly at Aaron. Aaron would definitely not admit to it. In the beginning, he would treat her very carefully, and he would think twice about his words but as they grew closer he beca much more casual and acted like how a typical brother would act.
"N- Nonsense. When did I gush about her? You have no idea how troubleso she is."
"What are you talking about? Look at her, so well-behaved."
Adeline pointed her nose upward with pride.
