I’m halfway to the car door when Tony’s phone buzzes.

He looks at the screen, and his face goes dead white.

"Katherine. Stop."

Sothing in his voice makes freeze, with my hand on the doorknob. It was not the commanding tone from before; this was different... more like out of fear.

He crosses to in three strides and shows his phone.

A photograph of . Getting into the car downstairs. Taken minutes ago.

The ssage below: She left you. Good. This makes my job easier when she’s alone, vulnerable, heartbroken - exactly how I want her.

Thanks for the assist, boss.

My blood runs cold.

"He’s watching." Tony’s voice is low. "Right now. Waiting for you to leave so he can-" He can’t finish.

I look at my packed bag, at the door, and at freedom that suddenly feels like a trap, then I step inside with him.

"I’m not running from this." But my voice shakes. "I’m running from you treating like-"

"Like soone I love?" His control is fracturing, I can see it. "Like soone whose death would destroy ?"

"Like soone you own." The words hurt to say. "Tony, I can’t breathe when you’re like this. When every decision is yours, and I’m just supposed to follow."

"Then what do you want?" He’s not yelling. Worse, he sounds broken. "Tell what you want, Katherine, because I’m lost here. I’m trying to keep you alive, and you’re treating it like it’s a cri."

"I want a partnership." I drop the bag. "Not commands, not orders, and definitely not you making decisions and expecting to obey because you know better."

"I do know better about security, about threats. About-"

"About ?" I step closer. "You know better about what I need? What I can handle? Tony, I’ve survived kidnapping, torture, and assassination attempts. I’m not fragile."

"You’re human." His hand cos up, almost touches my face, then falls. "And Vincent is a professional killer who’s been planning this for months. That’s not underestimating you. That’s reality."

The honesty in his voice deflates so of my anger, but not all of it.

"So what do we do?" I ask. "Because I can’t live in a cage and you won’t stop trying to build one."

Before he could answer, there ca an urgent knock.

Luca enters without waiting for permission, and Thomas follows behind him.

"We need to talk," Luca says. "About compromise."

Thomas looks between us, with my packed bag, Tony with his phone showing Vincent’s threat, the space between us that feels like a canyon.

"Sit down," Thomas says. It wasn’t a request. "Both of you."

We sat on opposite ends of the couch; the distance feels deliberate, yet painful.

"Anthony," Thomas starts. "You’re making my mistakes. The ones that cost everything with your mother, and nearly cost you."

Tony’s jaw tightens, but he doesn’t argue.

"Protection becos prison," Thomas continues. "I learned that too late. I tried to control your mother through fear - fear of the life we led, fear of losing you... and it pushed her away, made her feel trapped instead of treasured."

"She died," Tony says flatly. "The threats were real."

"They were, but my response was wrong. I isolated her, made decisions without her input. Treated her like sothing fragile instead of the strong woman she was." Thomas looks at . "Sound familiar?"

I nod, not trusting my voice.

"Katherine," Thomas turns to now. "My son is terrified. He’s genuinely terrified of losing you. It’s making him irrational, controlling, everything you’re accusing him of, but it cos from love, not power."

"I know that." My voice is small. "But a love that suffocates isn’t love. It’s fear wearing love’s mask."

"Exactly." Thomas nods. "So we find middle ground. Luca?"

Luca pulls out his tablet. "We compromise. Katherine keeps the consulting firm open, but we move operations to a secure building - one we control, with proper security. Clients are vetted by the FBI, and their etings are monitored. She gets to work, but with protection she can’t circumvent."

"And," Thomas adds, "Anthony stops making unilateral decisions. Every security asure, every restriction, gets discussed and agreed upon by both of you."

Tony’s silent, his jaw working.

"It’s not perfect," Luca says. "Katherine will feel constrained, Tony will feel she’s too exposed, but it’s a compromise. Neither of you gets everything you want."

"That’s not-" Tony starts.

"Son." Thomas’s voice is sharp. "Look at her... really look."

Tony turns to . I see him actually seeing the exhaustion in my face, the way I’m holding myself together through sheer will, the defeat in my eyes.

"She’s leaving," Thomas says quietly. "Right now, she’s deciding if she can stay with you, and the answer is tipping toward no. Is your pride worth that?"

Sothing breaks in Tony’s expression, and I see the walls crumbling.

"Katherine." He slides closer on the couch, careful, like I might bolt. "I’m sorry. For trying to control you, for treating your agency like it’s negotiable and for..." His voice cracks. "For being so afraid of losing you that I’m pushing you away."

"I’m scared too," I admit. "Vincent almost killed us today. He’s been in our bedroom. He’s watching us right now, probably. I’m terrified, Tony, but I can’t let that fear turn into soone who just... exists... who hides."

"I know." He takes my hand carefully. "And I can’t let my fear turn into a tyrant. But Katherine, I need you to understand: if sothing happens to you and Vincent succeeds, I won’t survive that. I would be gone... lost without you."

Tears sting my eyes. "And if you cage , if you make give up who I am to stay safe, I’m already gone. Just in a different way."

We stare at each other, both understanding we’re at a crossroads.

"Compromise," I say finally. "Luca’s plan. We try it, but Tony - you have to actually try, not just agree, then undermine ."

"And you have to actually let protect you. Not just agree, then take unnecessary risks."

"Deal." I squeeze his hand. "Equal partners even when it terrifies us."

"Especially when it terrifies us." He pulls closer, and I let him, leaning against his chest. His arms co around , careful, asking permission even now.

Thomas and Luca quietly leave, giving us privacy.

"I’m sorry," Tony murmurs into my hair. "For everything. For making you feel owned instead of loved."

"I’m sorry too for threatening to leave. For..." I can’t finish.

"For being human?" He tilts my face up. "For being scared? Katherine, you don’t apologize for that."

His lips find mine in a kiss that’s tender, apologetic, full of everything we can’t say. I kiss him back, tasting salt - not sure if it’s his tears or mine.

"Can we try again?" I whisper. "This ti without the control and without the fear running everything."

"I can try, I can’t promise I won’t slip. Old habits..."

"I’ll call you on it, and you call when I’m being reckless."

"Deal." He stands to offer his hand. "Co on. Let’s start over."

I let him pull to my feet. We’re standing close, and despite everything, despite the argunt and the fear and the threats, I feel the pull between us. The magnetic need.

"I missed you," I say, which makes no sense since we’ve been together all day.

"I know what you an." His hand slides to my waist. "Missed you too."

The kiss starts gently but quickly deepens. His hands roam my curves, relearning, claiming more softly than before. I arch into his touch, needing the connection.

"Let’s shower," he murmurs against my lips. "Let - let take care of you the right way."

In the bathroom, he turns on the water and adjusts the temperature perfectly. We undress each other slowly, carefully, but this feels different from this afternoon’s desperate joining. Less about control, more about connection.

Under the spray, Tony washes my hair with gentle fingers. Massages my scalp. He runs soapy hands over my body - not sexual, just... caring. Taking care of like he promised.

"Where are you?" he asks softly, echoing words from earlier.

This ti, I’m truthful. "Right here with you. Really here."

His hands are still on my waist. "Katherine, I need to know... are we okay? Like, really okay?"

I turn in his arms, the water cascading over us both. "We’re working on it. That’s enough for now."

He kisses , slow and deep. His hands slide down to cup my ass, pulling against him. I feel him hard against my stomach.

"Make love to ," I whisper. "Like you an it... like we’re partners."

"Always." He lifts easily and presses against the tile wall. The water makes everything slick and sensual. "Always partners even when I forget."

When he enters , it’s slow and deliberate, looking in my eyes the whole ti, and letting see him. Really see him - not the ruthless boss, not the cold tactician. Just Tony, who is scared, in love, and trying.

We move together, the water and steam surrounding us. His hands worship my curves, my thick thighs, my full breasts. Every touch saying what words can’t - that he cherishes this, cherishes .

"I love you," he gasps as I tighten around him. "God, Katherine, I love you."

"Love you too." I pull his mouth to mine. "So much, even when you’re impossible."

"Especially then." He smiles against my lips, and it feels like us again.
