I wake at 3:18 AM to find Katherine staring at my phone like it’s a venomous snake.
The pain in my side is a dull throb now - Dr. Zhang’s dication doing its job. But the look on Katherine’s face cuts deeper than any bullet.
"What is it?" My voice is rough with sleep and pain dication.
She doesn’t answer, just hands the phone.
The text ssage fills the screen, each word detonating like a small bomb in my chest.
Vincent was telling the truth. Angelo reported to . I’ve been running New York operations for two decades. You know , Anthony. Your father knows . In fact, your father has worked for since before you were born. Want proof? Ask Thomas about the elimination of the Ramírez family. Who really gave that order? Who really orchestrated the circumstances that led to your mother’s death?
- M
The room tilts slightly as I reread it. Then a third ti.
The Ramírez family. The ones my father eliminated when I was a child, every man, woman, and child bearing that na. The massacre that made Thomas Marvin a legend of ruthless retribution. He always said they were responsible for threatening our family, for the stress that complicated my mother’s pregnancy, for the fear that may have contributed to the childbirth complications that killed her.
Except it wasn’t revenge for family honor.
It was following orders.
"Tony?" Katherine’s voice sounds far away. "Are you okay?"
"No." The word cos out flat. "I’m really not."
I’m already moving, ignoring the screaming pain in my side as I swing my legs out of bed. Katherine tries to stop , her hands on my shoulders, but I gently move past her.
"Where are you going?"
"To get the truth." I pulled on sweatpants and didn’t bother with a shirt. The bandages stood stark white against my skin. "From my father right now."
"Tony, it’s 3:30 in the morning, and you’re injured. This can wait-"
"It’s waited thirty years." I pocket my phone. "I’m done waiting."
She doesn’t argue further. Just pulls on her robe and follows down the stairs.
Thomas’s room is on the second floor - my grandmother’s old sewing room that he’s occupied since moving in after her death. I don’t knock, just open the door.
He’s awake, sitting in the chair by the window, staring out at the dark street. Still dressed despite the hour, a glass of whiskey in his hand.
"I wondered when you’d co," he says without turning around.
"You knew." Not a question.
"Got the sa ssage five minutes ago." He takes a slow sip. "Figured you’d either receive one too, or Katherine would show you hers."
"Then you know why I’m here."
Thomas finally turns to face . In the dim light from the street, he looks older than his fifty-five years. Tired. Defeated. "The study. Katherine should hear this, too."
We move in silence - three people connected by blood and love and lies walking through a house that’s seen too much violence. The study is cold, the fire long since died. Thomas doesn’t bother lighting it. Just sits behind the desk that was his mother’s, then his, now a monunt to a legacy built on deception.
I lower myself carefully into the chair across from him, Katherine standing beside , her hand on my uninjured shoulder.
"Tell about the Ramírez family," I say. "Tell everything."
Thomas sets down his whiskey glass with deliberate care. "What do you want to know?"
"The truth. For once in my goddamn life, the truth."
He flinches like I’ve struck him. Good.
"The Ramírez family," Thomas begins, his voice hollow, "were muscle for soone higher up the food chain. They ran enforcent, collections, and sent ssages for the real power brokers."
"And my mother?" I said bitterly.
"Your mother was eight months pregnant with you when the threats started." Thomas’s hands curl into fists on the desk. "I was building Marvin operations without permission, without paying tribute to people I didn’t even know existed. The Commission. I thought I was independent, but I turned out to be stepping on established territory."
Katherine’s hand tightens on my shoulder.
"The Ramírez family delivered the ssages," Thomas continues. "Escalating threats. Intimidation. They ca to the house twice while your mother was there. The second ti, they made it very clear what would happen if I didn’t fall in line." His voice cracks slightly. "She went into early labor that night. From the stress, the fear. The doctors said the complications were caused by the premature birth."
"She died giving birth to ." I’ve always known this. It’s the one solid fact of my origin story.
"She did." Thomas ets my eyes. "And I held you in one arm while I held her hand as she died with the other. She never even got to see you open your eyes."
The pain in his voice is real. Three decades old and still raw.
"The Ramírez elimination," I say. "You told it was justice. Revenge for what they did to our family."
"It was." Thomas’s jaw tightens. "But not my revenge. My first order from M. They wanted to prove my loyalty, prove I understood my place in the hierarchy. Eliminate the family that threatened mine - but do it on command, not out of personal vendetta."
"You killed an entire family - children included -on soone’s orders?" My voice was cold.
"I killed an entire family because refusing ant they’d kill you next." Thomas doesn’t look away. "You were three months old, Anthony. Your grandmother was caring for you while I was out hunting Ramírez mbers. The ssage was clear: obey or lose your son, too. The son your mother died bringing into this world."
"So you obeyed." Contempt drips from every word.
"I obeyed." He doesn’t flinch from my judgnt. "And I’ve been obeying ever since. Every decision, every move, every expansion of Marvin operations - all filtered through M’s requirents. I thought I was building an empire for you. For your future. I was building their empire, I was just the manager."
Katherine speaks for the first ti. "The Commission, please explain it."
Thomas shifts his attention to her, almost grateful for the tactical question rather than the emotional ones. "Five families control New York’s criminal operations. Have for decades. Drugs, weapons, money laundering, political corruption, prostitution - divided among them. Ramírez controlled enforcent and collections before I eliminated them; that territory got absorbed by others. The Torrino family had the docks and import operations. We had legitimate business fronts and financial operations."
"Who are the other families?" I ask.
The Wei family runs Chinatown and Asian operations. The Petrov brothers handle Russian and Eastern European connections. And there’s one more, the family that provides political protection. Judges, cops, politicians." He pauses. "I’ve never known their na. They operate completely in shadow."
"And above all of them is M." Katherine’s analytical mind is working. "One person controlling five families?"
"Not one person. One position. The head of the Commission. Could be different people over the years, I don’t know." Thomas runs a hand through his silver hair. "I’ve never t them face to face. All communications through interdiaries. Encrypted ssages. Untraceable accounts. Orders delivered through cutouts like Angelo."
"Angelo worked for M too," I realize. "His operations, his territory-"
"All sanctioned by the Commission. When Angelo went rogue, started making moves without approval, M cut him loose. Let him be exposed, arrested, eliminated." Thomas’s smile is bitter. "That’s how it works. Stay in line, you’re protected. Step out of line, you’re expendable."
The pieces are falling into place with horrifying clarity. "And Vincent?"
"’M’s insurance policy. Placed with us years ago to monitor, report, and ensure compliance." Thomas’s jaw tightens. "I suspected soone in the organization was feeding information out. Never imagined it was Vincent. Never imagined he’d been there from the beginning."
"How long?" Katherine asks. "How long have you been working for M?"
