One month after Katherine left.
I have been living alone in our apartnt, and it’s been empty, quiet, and unbearable.
Every room reminded of her. Her coffee mug in the kitchen, her books on the shelf, and her scent, which still lingered on the pillows.
I should move out, find sowhere new, and start fresh.
But I couldn’t. This apartnt is the last piece of her I have.
Work was the only distraction as I worked eighteen hours a day, seven days a week.
Bella was already worried. "You’re going to burn out." She said one day
"This is better than thinking about her."
"Tony-"
"I’m fine, Bella. Just focused on business."
But we both knew I was lying.
Marvin Industries was thriving.
We purchased a new hotel in Miami. The grand opening was scheduled for next month.
Another entertainnt complex was acquired in Vegas. This was us breaking ground in two weeks.
The stock prices were at record highs, and the board mbers have been ecstatic.
"You’ve turned this company into an empire," Robert Gale said during a board eting. "Your family would be proud."
But his words ant nothing, as this success without Katherine felt hollow, empty, and pointless.
I was already rebuilding an empire. For what and for whom?
Luca has been like a right-hand man, reporting weekly.
"She’s safe, in the small town near Columbia, living the quiet life she envisioned and had been working remotely from her apartnt."
"Is she happy?"
He paused long enough. "She seems... adjusting."
Not happy, only adjusting. There was a difference.
"And Elliot?"
"He’s fully recovered and back at Columbia. There have been no further incidents, and we have an extra security detail following him discreetly."
Good. At least one thing went right.
Elliot was safe, and that’s what Katherine ever wanted.
Bella cornered in my office later in the day.
"You need to go after her."
"She asked for space. I’m respecting that."
"For how long? Tony, you’re miserable. She’s probably miserable. This makes no sense."
"It makes perfect sense. I’m dangerous. Our family’s past endangered Elliot. She chose him over ."
"So fix it and make it right. Show her you can protect both of them."
"How?" I couldn’t help shouting now. "I can’t change who our father was and I definitely can’t erase the Marvin family history. I cannot undo decades of enemies and grudges, Bella."
"No, but you can build a different future. Show her your past does not define you."
After she left, I was alone with that thought.
Could I actuallybuild sothing different, or was my past an anchor I’ll carry forever?
Luca visited unexpectedly.
A forr enemy - Angelo Torrino’s son. Now one of my closest allies.
"You’re being an idiot," he said without preamble.
"Thanks. That was very helpful."
"Katherine is a beautiful woman. Intelligent, strong, and resilient." He said, observing . "Do you think you’re the only man who sees that? If you rember vividly, I was interested before. Well, I obviously backed out since I couldn’t compete with you then."
My jaw clenched. "What are you saying?"
"I’m saying she won’t stay single forever. A woman as incredible as that? So n will see what you let go, and they’ll pursue her. Probably already is."
"What do you an?"
He pulled out his phone and showed so surveillance photos.
It was of Katherine at a grocery store, talking to a man, and they were both smiling.
Probably the first genuine smile I’ve seen in months.
My blood boils. "Who is that?"
"Pete Anderson. He’s a single father with a six-year-old daughter nad Mandy. Lives in Katherine’s neighbourhood. Apparently, they knew each other in high school, an high school boyfriend, I guess."
High school sweetheart. First love. Before and everything.
"They’re just talking-"
"For now." Luca’s voice was serious. "But he’s a single dad, Tony. Looking for a mother for his daughter. Katherine’s perfect. Beautiful, kind, successful, great with kids. He’d be crazy not to pursue her."
"She’s not interested-"
"You sure about that? Or are you hoping she’s waiting for you while you ’respect her space’?"
I wasn’t sure anymore, and that thought terrified the hell out of .
Against my better judgnt, I review the surveillance reports.
Katherine’s routine was simple. Quite predictable and safe.
Remote work from ho, grocery shopping twice a week, coffee shop on Wednesdays, library on Saturdays, and visited Elliot at Columbia on Sundays.
It was simple and quiet. Everything my chaotic world wasn’t.
And this Pete Anderson kept on appearing.
He was coincidentally at the grocery store shopping the sa ti as her.
He always happened to be at the coffee shop whenever she arrived.
He was usually at the park walking his daughter when Katherine was jogging.
"He’s pursuing her," I realized.
"Obviously," Luca confird. "The question is, what are you going to do about it?"
Part of wanted to drive there, confront her, and fight for her.
Tell her I love her, that I can change,e and we can make it work.
The other part knew she left for a reason. It was a valid reason that involved Elliot’s safety.
"If I go after her, I’d prove her right. That I can’t let go. That I’m obsessive and dangerous."
"If you don’t go after her, you lose her permanently."
It was an impossible choice.
Thomas visited the office and tried to give different advice.
"Katherine left because she was afraid. Not of you but of your legacy, the family’s legacy."
"What’s the difference?"
"You can’t change your legacy, but you can change how you handle it. Show her you’re not your father and that you won’t let the past define your future."
"How?"
"By being different and by choosing family over the empire. By showing her she matters more than any business or revenge or legacy."
But I decided to wait. Give her space and respect her choice.
"You’re making a mistake," Luca warned.
"Maybe, but it’s her decision. If she wants to move on, I won’t stop her."
"Even if she moves on with Pete Anderson?"
The na made irrationally angry. "Even then."
But saying it and aning it were different things.
Two weeks later, I got a new surveillance report.
Katherine and Pete were at the park with his daughter, Mandy.
They were having a picnic, with a blanket spread out, eating sandwiches, and drinking lemonade.
Katherine was smiling at the little girl. Mandy was showing her a flower, and Katherine was laughing.
That should be our future: our family and our happiness.
But I let her go.
My chest tightened, and the pain was worse than any physical wound.
Luca’s updates continued.
"Pete invited Katherine to dinner, but she declined."
Relief flooded through .
"But he’s been persistent. He’s had flowers delivered to her apartnt, coffee dates; using his daughter to get close. The classic single dad playbook."
"Katherine won’t fall for that-"
"Won’t she?" Luca’s voice was sharp. "She loves kids, Tony. Mandy’s sweet and adorable. And Pete’s offering everything you can’t. Safety, normalcy. A chance at a simple suburban life with weekend barbecues and PTA etings."
He was right, and I hated it.
Pete Anderson can give Katherine everything I can’t.
Bella’s frustration reached a breaking point.
"You’re being ridiculous. Go get her and tell her you love her. Fight for her."
"She doesn’t want -"
"Doesn’t she, or was she just scared? There’s a difference, Tony."
"What if I go there and she rejects and confirms it’s really over?"
"Then at least you’ll know. It’s better than this limbo and this half-life where you’re miserable, and she’s miserable, and you’re both too stubborn to fix it."
She’s right, but I was terrified.
What if I go there and Katherine looks at with nothing? No love. No hope. Just... relief that I was finally gone?
Three months after Katherine left, I received new surveillance photos.
It was Pete’s hand on Katherine’s back, guiding her into a restaurant, and she was not pulling away.
They were having dinner, just the two of them, and Mandy was with a babysitter.
This wasn’t casual anymore; it was a date.
A real date.
I was staring at the photo and could feel rage, jealousy, heartbreak... all consuming at once.
"Tony?" Luca asked carefully. "What do you want to do?"
What do I want?
I want to drive there, pull Katherine away from him, and remind her she was mine.
But she’s not mine. Not anymore.
She made that clear when she walked out.
I was losing her. Maybe already lost her.
To a man who could offer everything, I couldn’t.
Safety, normalcy, and a simple life.
And the worst part? I couldn’t even bla her.
Pete Anderson was probably perfect for her. Safe, kind, stable with no mafia past. No enemies hunting his family and no imminent danger following him everywhere.
Everything I was not.
Katherine deserves that. She deserves safety and the normal everyday life she lived before eting .
Even if it killed to admit it.
That night, I was alone in the apartnt, drinking.
Which was rare for , as I don’t drink to cope. Never have.
But tonight, drowning seed appropriate.
My phone rang, and it was from Luca.
"We have a problem."
"What now?"
"The shooter. The one who shot Elliot, the FBI has identified him."
I sat up. Alert despite the alcohol. "And?"
"He’s a forr associate of your father’s. His na’s Hassan Patton; he was an enforcer from the old days. Holding a grudge for twenty years over sothing your father did. He’s been in hiding, but we found him. Location confird."
"Where?"
"Two hours from Katherine’s new town."
My blood ran cold. "What?"
"He’s apparently planning another attack on Elliot, and possibly Katherine. He’s been watching them. The surveillance confird it."
"When?"
"Could be anyti. He’s been tracking their routines for weeks and has just waiting for the right mont."
The choice crystallizes instantly.
Stay away, respect Katherine’s wishes, and let her live in peace.
Or go there, protect her, prove that danger follows whether I’m present or not, and that leaving didn’t make her safe.
"Assemble a team," I order. "We’re going tonight."
"And Katherine? She’ll see you and know you’re there. She’d know you’ve been watching."
"I don’t care." I was already moving, getting dressed, and preparing. "Let her hate . As long as she’s alive to do it."
I was going to that town.
To protect Katherine and Elliot.
Whether she wanted there or not.
And maybe - just maybe - I’ll fight for her too.
Because losing her to danger is unacceptable.
But losing her to Pete Anderson?
That might be worse.
