"Eve," he said casually, still holding her hand, as if he had no intention of letting go anyti soon. "Call once you’re done dealing with him."

Evelyn turned to him and smiled calmly.

"Hmm, I will." She tilted her head slightly and added with playful confidence, "Hubby, no need to worry about . I seriously have a plan to handle him."

"I know," he said simply.

Then, before she could say anything else, he leaned forward and kissed her softly on the lips.

The kiss was brief but warm.

When he finally let go, Axel opened the car door for her.

"Alright, my wife can go now..." he said. "But, don’t tire yourself."

"Hm, I will not..." She gave him a warm smile before stepping out of the car.

The morning air felt cooler than she expected.

As soon as her feet touched the ground, her posture straightened automatically. The gentle smile she wore for Axel slowly disappeared, replaced by a calm but distant expression.

Across from her at the entrance, the group of directors imdiately focused on her.

Jason Walters nodded once in greeting.

Joseph Carter, however, looked like a man waiting for a storm to arrive.

Evelyn’s eyes settled on him. For a brief second, their gazes t. Joseph’s expression tightened.

And in that mont, the flash of anger Evelyn had been holding back quietly rose to the surface.

But instead of showing it openly, she simply smiled. A polite, calm, and slightly dangerous smile.

Then she began walking toward them.

"Uncle, I’m glad to see you again..."

Evelyn’s voice carried a polite warmth as she stepped forward and greeted Jason Walters, the current CFO of Walters Group.

Jason imdiately burst into laughter the mont he saw her, his cheerful voice echoing near the entrance.

"Hahaha... too, Eve. You seem very busy lately," Jason said as he pulled her into a warm embrace. "You never visit us anymore. Your grandmother is starting to believe you’ve forgotten the way ho."

Evelyn laughed softly while returning the hug. "That’s not true. I still rember where the kitchen is. I just haven’t had ti to raid it."

Jason chuckled louder at that before finally letting her go.

After stepping back, Evelyn brushed a strand of hair behind her ear and smiled. "I’ll visit Grandma this weekend."

"Oh yes, I heard," Jason replied, nodding with satisfaction. "Mother already made sure everyone will gather at the house for lunch. She announced it like a royal order this morning."

Evelyn sighed in amusent. "That sounds like Grandma."

Jason leaned slightly closer and lowered his voice jokingly. "You’d better co early. If you’re late, she might send soone to drag you there."

"I believe she would," Evelyn said calmly, her lips curving into a small smile.

Then she turned her attention to the other directors who had gathered at the entrance. Several senior mbers of Walters Group stood there with polite expressions, including the man she least wanted to see today.

Joseph Carter.

Evelyn kept her expression composed as if nothing had changed.

"I’m sorry for making all of you co out here just to welco ," she said politely. "You really don’t have to do this again in the future. Please."

One of the directors waved his hand dismissively. "Not at all, Mrs. Knight. It’s good to see you."

"Yes, welco back," another added.

Jason patted her shoulder lightly before stepping aside. "Alright, we won’t hold you here any longer. Go handle your work."

"Thank you, Uncle."

With that brief and warm exchange finished, the small group slowly dispersed. Each director returned to their respective offices while Evelyn walked calmly toward the VIP elevator.

Behind her, Joseph followed. For a mont, neither of them spoke.

Then Joseph finally cleared his throat. "Welco back, Mrs. Knight," he said in a professional tone. "I will walk you to your office."

Evelyn didn’t look back. "Okay."

Silence returned imdiately.

The quiet between them felt heavier than the building itself.

When they reached the elevator, the doors slid open with a soft ding. They stepped inside together, and the doors closed behind them.

The elevator began its smooth climb toward the top floor.

Still, no one spoke.

Joseph kept his gaze forward, his posture stiff and controlled. anwhile, Evelyn simply watched the glowing floor numbers change one by one.

The tension between them grew thicker with every passing second.

Once... these elevator rides used to be filled with casual conversations and light jokes.

Now, it felt like standing inside a sealed box with an enemy.

Finally, the elevator stopped.

Ding.

The doors opened.

Evelyn stepped out first.

"Joseph," she said calmly without turning around.

He imdiately followed her. "Yes, Mrs. Knight?"

Evelyn continued walking toward her office, her heels clicking steadily against the floor. "Follow to my office," she said.

Joseph’s expression tightened slightly.

She adds, "There’s sothing I need to talk to you about..."

Those words lingered in the air like a quiet warning. Instantly, Joseph’s expression grew somber as he followed her closely. He knew what she wanted to talk about.

...

Evelyn barely glanced around the office after stepping inside.

Technically, it was now her office—the CEO’s office. The entire space had just been redesigned according to her preferences. The furniture was elegant but simple, the colors soft and warm, mostly cream and light gold. Even the large window behind the desk allowed sunlight to spill gently across the wooden floor.

Normally, she would have taken a mont to admire it.

But not today.

Evelyn walked straight toward the cream sofa placed in the corner of the room.

Joseph quietly closed the door. The soft click echoed in the room.

When Evelyn lifted her gaze, she saw him standing there awkwardly, as if he suddenly didn’t know where to place himself.

She gestured toward the sofa across from her.

"Sit."

Joseph hesitated for a brief second before finally obeying. He sat down stiffly, his back straight, his hands resting on his knees like a nervous student called to the principal’s office.

Evelyn studied him silently.

Then her sharp gaze hardened.

"Why did you do that to , Joseph?"
