Ryan and I had just stepped into the hallway when the muffled hum of the ballroom rushed in like a physical weight, drowning out the suffocating silence of the study.

And just like that, the private war between Ryan and ended.

Or rather, it moved underground.

Ryan stepped back first, giving space to move forward. I knew it wasn’t a retreat of fear or a gesture of respect; it was pure, cold calculation on his part.

I brushed past him, and I felt the shift in him instantly, the desperate, grieving lover vanishing behind the mask of a controlled predator.

I lowered my gaze, smoothing down invisible creases on my midnight-erald dress as if nothing had happened.

As if my heart wasn’t still trying to claw its way out of my chest.

As if the man standing three feet away hadn’t just looked at and realized I wasn’t Isabelle.

Joel smiled, his expression a perfect veneer of paternal pride, completely unaware of the wreckage he had just walked into.

"Perfect timing," he said, his voice booming with a warmth that felt like a threat in my mind. "The toast is about to begin."

Estelle reached for my hand again. Her skin was soft, her grip grounding and motherly, and for a terrifying second, I almost forgot this was all a lie.

I leaned into her touch, using her as a shield against the two n watching .

Cassian said nothing.

Hell, he didn’t need to.

He was still leaning against the doorfra with his new grey suit moulding to his fra. He had that bored look on his face as if he had all the ti in the world.

But I could feel his sharp blue eyes tracking every tiny detail of what he had walked into.

He wasn’t questioning , nor did he look confused; he looked like he had already figured everything out.

Cassian looked like a man who had walked into a room, seen the blood on the floor, and was simply waiting for soone to confess.

"Hey Cassian, I was just congratulating Isabelle on the marriage alliance," Ryan said.

Cassian’s gaze flicked to Ryan, just for a second—but the weight of it was enough to make the air turn brittle.

He must have seen the way I refused to look at my ’brother.’

He just nodded at Ryan, his gaze still trained on ... Always .

He knew.

He didn’t know what it was yet... but he knew there was sothing.

We walked back toward the ballroom together, a grotesque parade of secrets.

Estelle walked with an affectionate grace, Joel focused on the optics of the evening, Ryan trailed behind us like a coiled spring, and Cassian... Cassian walked with the silent, heavy tread of a man who had already won.

The music grew louder with every step. Laughter. The rhythmic clink of crystal. The sound of power enjoying itself. It was painfully normal, and I wondered if anyone in that room would still be smiling if they knew the rot that had just been exposed behind closed doors.

The room quieted as Joel stepped toward the center of the floor. He raised his glass, and the long years of the Quinn legacy seed to settle on his shoulders.

Every eye in the room shifted to us.

To Joel. To . To Cassian.

"Ladies and gentlen," Joel’s voice carried smoothly, commanding the room without effort. "Tonight is not just a celebration of my daughter’s return. It is the beginning of sothing far greater."

Cassian stepped closer to . He stood too close...always too close, invading my senses and my thoughts.

I could sll the sandalwood mixed with rain and the cold tallic tang of his presence.

He leaned slightly toward , his lips barely an inch from my ear.

"You’re quiet," he murmured, his voice a low vibration that skipped across my skin. "Should I be worried?"

I swallowed and acted as if his words didn’t affect .

I didn’t look at Cassian. Fuck, I couldn’t. I kept my eyes fixed on Joel, my face a mask of icy composure. "About what?" I asked softly.

"About what I walked into," he replied. "You and your brother seem... close."

My pulse spiked, a frantic drumming in my ears, but I forced a small, practiced smile for the benefit of the onlookers and everyone present.

"Of course, we grew up together," I said.

I was standing between two n who could destroy for entirely different reasons, and I had to play the part of the jewel in the crown.

"Our families have stood apart for too long," Joel continued, his voice rising with conviction. "This alliance is about peace. It is about a legacy that will outlast us all. And of course... none of this would be possible without my daughter."

All eyes turned to again. I felt the weight of their judgnt, their curiosity, and their expectations. But more than that, I felt two very different gazes boring into .

Ryan was watching silently from the periphery, his eyes dark with a new, lethal understanding. Cassian stood beside , his eyes studying like a puzzle he was about to solve.

Joel lifted his glass higher, the crystal catching the light of a dozen chandeliers.

"To Isabelle Quinn," he declared. "And Cassian Knight. May this union mark the beginning of a new era."

"To Isabelle and Cassian!" the room echoed, a wall of sound that felt like a closing trap.

Cassian turned to then. Slowly. Deliberately. He didn’t raise his glass to the room. He raised it toward .

"To honesty," he said quietly, his blue eyes locking onto mine with a terrifying intensity. "Wouldn’t you agree... Isabelle?"

The world seed to shrink until there was only him and the lie between us. My hand was steady as I lifted my own glass. I t his gaze, held it, and allowed a soft, untraceable smile to touch my lips.

"Of course," I said, my voice as smooth as the silk I wore. "Honesty is the foundation of every strong relationship."

Our glasses clinked, a sharp, final sound.

As I took a sip of the vintage champagne, it tasted like ash.

Across the room, I caught Ryan’s eye. He wasn’t looking at with anger anymore. In fact, he didn’t even look desperate.

He was watching with a slow, overly proud smile.

It was the kind of smile a man wore when he believed sothing belonged to him...and that made the hair on my arms stand on end.

And in that mont, I realized...I wasn’t the only one pretending tonight. The private war wasn’t over.

It had just grown, and I was standing at the center of it.
