Mallory sat at the head of their makeshift war table, running her fingers along the edges of the map.

"Greg, Harper, Quinn, Ryder," she said, tapping various points on the map. "We need to go deeper into the city. It’s ti we find out who—or what—is controlling the Shadows."

"Is that wise?" Greg asked, folding his arms. "We’re already spread thin. If we lose anyone—"

"We won’t," Mallory interrupted firmly. "We’ve been reacting to everything so far, and it’s ti to act. Besides," she added, smirking, "I’m not planning on losing. Are you?"

Greg gave a reluctant nod.

Alex leaned back in his chair, balancing precariously on two legs. "So, what’s my job in this grand suicide mission? Comic relief? Handso distraction?"

Mallory shot him a look. "You’re staying here to reinforce the factory. Soone has to keep Blinky in check and coordinate from base."

Blinky buzzed indignantly, its lights flashing in a pattern that Alex swore translated to "I outrank you."

Preparation for Departure

The team spent the morning preparing for their expedition. Quinn, who had been reserved since her arrival, surprised everyone by taking a proactive role. She crafted makeshift explosives from salvaged supplies, her movents precise and thodical.

"You’ve done this before," Harper remarked, watching her work.

Quinn shrugged without looking up. "You pick up a thing or two when you’re alone for long enough."

Harper softened. "You’re not alone anymore, you know."

Quinn paused for a mont, her expression unreadable, before returning to her task.

anwhile, Alex was busy supervising—or so he called it—while Mallory inspected their gear.

"Hey, Mal," Alex called from his perch on a stack of crates. "What do you think they’ll find out there? Evil overlords? Shadow factories? Maybe a giant, sentient blender?"

"Let’s hope it’s the blender," Mallory replied dryly. "At least we’d get smoothies out of it."

Into the City

The team left just before midday, heading deeper into the city’s ruins. The air grew colder as they approached, the silence unnerving. Ryder led the way, his sharp eyes scanning every shadow, every flicker of movent.

"Anyone else feel like we’re being watched?" Harper muttered, gripping her weapon tightly.

"Definitely," Quinn replied. "And it’s not just paranoia. Look at the rooftops."

They all glanced upward, noticing fleeting shapes darting out of sight.

"Shadows," Greg confird. "They’re testing us."

Mallory’s jaw tightened. "Then let’s give them sothing to report back about."

The group moved swiftly but cautiously, avoiding open streets and sticking to narrow alleys. The city was a labyrinth of destruction, with buildings leaning precariously and vehicles abandoned mid-crash.

As they passed what used to be a bakery, Harper paused. The faded sign above the door read "Joy’s Sweet Treats," and the scent of sothing faintly sweet still lingered.

"Do you think they had cinnamon rolls?" she asked wistfully.

Greg chuckled. "Focus, Harper. We’re not here for pastries."

"Speak for yourself," Ryder muttered.

The group stifled laughter, the tension easing slightly.

Ambush in the Shadows

They reached an open plaza, its centerpiece a massive fountain long since dried up. The team spread out, searching for any signs of movent.

"This feels too easy," Greg said, his voice low.

The words had barely left his mouth when the ground erupted around them. Shadows poured out from every direction, their inky forms moving with unsettling precision.

"Defensive positions!" Mallory shouted, raising her weapon.

The group ford a tight circle, their backs to the fountain. Quinn hurled one of her makeshift explosives, the blast scattering several Shadows.

Harper’s sharp shooting took down more, while Ryder fought with brutal efficiency, his machete slicing through the creatures like butter.

But the Shadows kept coming.

"These aren’t random attacks!" Greg shouted, firing into the fray. "They’re herding us!"

Mallory’s eyes darted around, searching for an escape. Then she saw it—a narrow passageway on the far side of the plaza.

"There!" she shouted, pointing. "Fall back!"

The team moved as one, fighting their way toward the passage. Blasts of gunfire and the sharp crack of explosives echoed around them.

As they reached the passage, a massive Shadow erged, its size dwarfing the others. Its eyes glowed red, and its movents were deliberate.

"Oh, co on!" Harper shouted. "Who ordered the Shadow King?"

Mallory didn’t hesitate. "Cover !"

She charged forward, firing at the creature’s legs. It roared in pain but didn’t fall. Greg and Ryder joined in, their combined efforts finally bringing the beast down.

"Go, go, go!" Mallory shouted.

The team sprinted through the passage, erging into a quiet street. They didn’t stop until they were several blocks away, their breaths ragged.

"What the hell was that?" Quinn asked, her voice shaking.

"Sothing new," Mallory replied grimly. "And sothing tells we’ll be seeing more of it."

Back at the Factory

anwhile, Alex was having his own adventure—or so he claid.

"Blinky, I’m telling you, this barricade needs a flathrower," he said, gesturing wildly.

Blinky buzzed disapprovingly, its lights flashing in a pattern that Alex interpreted as "You’re an idiot."

"Fine, no flathrower," Alex grumbled. "But what about—"

The sound of footsteps interrupted him. He spun around, weapon drawn, only to see Eliza entering with an armful of supplies.

"Relax, Alex," she said. "I’m not a Shadow."

"Good thing," Alex replied. "Because if you were, I’d have... uh... negotiated aggressively."

Eliza rolled her eyes. "You’re hopeless."

As she walked away, Alex turned to Blinky. "She totally thinks I’m cool."

Blinky buzzed in a pattern that could only be described as laughter.

A New Ally

Back in the city, Mallory’s team stumbled upon a hidden bunker. Inside, they found an older man surrounded by monitors, each one displaying a different part of the city.

"Who are you?" Mallory demanded, raising her weapon.

The man raised his hands in surrender. "I’m not your enemy. My na is Elias. I’ve been watching you."

"Watching us?" Greg said, stepping forward. "Why?"

"Because you’re different," Elias replied. "You’re not like the others. You fight back."

"And what are you doing here?" Mallory asked.

"Studying the Shadows," Elias said. "Trying to understand them. They’re not just mindless creatures. They’re part of sothing much bigger."

Mallory exchanged a glance with Greg. "Go on."

Elias leaned forward, his expression serious. "The Shadows are connected. A hive mind. And at the center of it is sothing... ancient. Sothing that doesn’t belong in this world."

Mallory felt a chill run down her spine. "And you know how to stop it?"

Elias hesitated. "Maybe. But it won’t be easy."

"Nothing ever is," Greg said.

Back at Base

When the team returned to the factory, they found Alex and Blinky in the middle of another argunt—or rather, Alex arguing with Blinky.

"Mal!" Alex called, waving her over. "Tell Blinky we need a flathrower!"

Mallory sighed. "No flathrowers, Alex."

"Traitor," Alex muttered.

Despite the humor, the weight of their discovery hung heavy over the group.

As the evening wore on, they gathered around the table, Elias sharing everything he knew about the Shadows and their connection.

"So, what’s the plan?" Harper asked.

Mallory looked around at her team, her expression determined. "We fight. But this ti, we go for the head."
