Unlike the space station that he'd "accidentally" flown through, Zach was fairly certain that pretty much anything he destroyed while actually on the planet would respawn and reset each week. For this reason, he did not bother to hold anything back as he sprinted as fast as his body could move, his boots destroying the tracks each ti he stomped down on them, creating a bang with each stomp that echoed off the walls of this dark tunnel.
The wraiths were faster, however, and a growing number of the monstrous-looking creatures, with their wrinkly, haggard, old female faces, were just about upon him. But unlike the original one that had chased him in Lesser Heilor, these ones were at least mobs with nas and levels that could be seen.

As a bunch of them closed in on his position, Zach activated Jolting Restraint, which consud all five Jolt Charges of his Bold Treads of New Horizons, and caused more than fifteen wraith-sized balls of yellowish electricity to pop into existence and bring all his nearest pursuers to an abrupt halt while also lighting the dark tunnel up.
Zach, briefly looking behind him, was glad to see that his AOE stun, which had a duration of between 3.5 to 8 seconds, served as sothing almost like a cage, the electrical balls surrounding their black-robed bodies. And though he doubted it would hold for more than 4 seconds against such high-level monstrosities, Zach was now moving fast enough that all fifteen wraiths were quickly left behind.
Unfortunately, the sa couldn't be said about the twenty still rushing towards him, which pulled ahead of the stunned 15. So of them were running, and so of them were hovering while moving at an equal speed; this group was quickly passing up their nightmarish allies, their clawed hands reaching out for him. The good news, however, was that they did not continue to chase him for very long. The bad news, however, was the specific reason they all kind of stopped and pulled off right around the sa ti.
Why'd they stop? he wondered.
He found out a mont later.
Sothing happened shortly after the wraiths gave up on catching him. There was a slight change to the tracks. It felt like they had beco inclined. But this "slight" change gradually beca more pronounced, and before long, Zach realized he was running directly up a steep incline, one that caused him to pant and huff for air as he was no longer holding anything back in his desperate, all-out dash to catch up with the runaway subway train.
It now occurred to Zach that the tunnel was becoming less dark—and also less cool. Opening his map, he realized the temperature had gone from a comfortable 77 all the way up to 102.4. And it was rising very quickly!
Oh no, he thought as the incline beca steeper and steeper, which cost him speed and made his heart work harder. He was starting to feel the burn in his legs and chest. The fact that he'd been able to run at his maximum speed for as long as he already had was a testant to his efforts so far in increasing his stamina. But this incline was really starting to push him to his limits. It was an obstacle that the train clearly did not have to overco, as its speed did not slow the way Zach's did.
At best, Zach was matching its speed. He'd gained on it, but not enough just yet to put it into view. Now, while having to run up such a very steep slope, he was only capable of holding an equal pace. But the tir was continuing to count down and down. He needed to do better!
Ti Remaining: 9:37
I can't lose that train!
Zach's sense of dread heightened as the darkness continued to give way to light. Now, he could see without having to concentrate; this, as at last the terrain leveled off and beca once again flat, letting him return to a pace that was just fast enough to aningfully begin shrinking the distance between himself and car 7. In fact, up ahead, he could just barely make it out about two miles in the distance. And for all this, he should have been grateful.
But he wasn't. Gods, no, he wasn't.
Because there was a blindingly bright light ahead, which could only an one thing: that Zach was about to run at full speed through the Gods-be-damned desert, the one thing he knew he really wasn't supposed to do: the one thing that'd kill him faster than anything else on this planet.
But he had no choice.
Or wait…was that even true?
Now that he really thought about it, he actually did have a choice. Technically, he could just give up on the quest, accept the loss in "miles" and the quest reward, and instead, he could go back to hunting for more question marks. From what he'd seen so far of this planet, he was now completely certain that they were all over the place and impossible to avoid finding no matter where in the desert he ended up.
There's probably millions of ways to get to the city, he thought.
But sothing pressed him onward. Stubbornness and a touch of pride. And also, the fact that this quest had also cost him a Gods-be-damned Light Stone. There was no way he was letting himself fail it, even if the only consequence was having to find so other quest or waypoint that would help him in his journey. He'd already "invested" too much into this.
Still, though, the mont his speeding body shot out of the tunnel and made his grand return into the punishingly, unbearably hot Albion-4 sun, he wondered if his determination and will would hold up long enough for him to see this quest through to the end.
According to his map, it was now 2:42 PM, the temperature was a ludicrous 185.2 degrees—the hottest he'd experienced so far—and the distance from here to the city was still 3,476 miles. And that Gods-cursed subway train—which was now more appropriately called a surface train—was dead center in Zach's view. He could see it. It was right there!
But Gods…in this heat, it felt so much farther away than it actually was. To Zach, the heat beca an enemy stronger than any mob he'd had to face aboard it. Honestly, it felt to Zach like a pillow was smothering him to death. His stamina, which was already pretty drained, began to escape him faster than the sweat that soaked him.
Even as he continued to run, he opened up his inventory and tossed all his plate armor into his QI along with his helm. Everything but his boots, which began to release sparks as he ran; this ant he'd already generated one of the five Jolt Charges he'd need if he wanted to use his AOE stun again. He also threw back on his mage armor, and likewise, he stuffed away his spear and once again grabbed his spell blade.
Having changed his equipnt, he hoped to feel marginally better—but he had no such luck. He was moving so fast and sweating so intensely that he was literally sending thick drops of it flying off behind him as he chased after the train.
At the mont, it honestly felt like everything was working against him. In fact, the only thing going in his favor was the fact that he was running on train tracks and not sand; if he had been running on sand, the loss to his speed would have made ever catching up impossible. But this was not enough to reassure him. Each ti his boots stomped down and smashed another section of railing, he felt his determination begin to wane even more. And this certainly wasn't helped by the sight of five question marks that began to pop up all over his map in a semi-circle ahead of him.
I…I could just go to those and forget this whole—
No!
No way!
He'd already co this far. And what was more, this was the path that his friends had taken. And that ant sothing to him, because there had to be millions—if not tens of millions—of various pathways to get to the city, yet sohow, he had stumbled upon the sa one his friends had followed. It must have been fate.
And yeah, he knew that such a thing was trivial and did not ultimately matter. The villagers had explained to Zach that all adventurers entering the city started off in the sa spot regardless of the path taken to get there, aning that following in the footsteps of his friends held no strategic value, because he would still ultimately be sent to the sa place regardless.
But this quest…it was more symbolic now than necessary. Because Zach refused to fail where all 104 of the adventurers had succeeded. He refused to be the only adventurer of the bunch who could not get this done.
But my body's about to give, he thought, barely able to keep up with the demand for oxygen. I'm tired. I can't keep running.
Or could he?
It had been more than five days since he'd last used Unleashed Phase. His Phase Level was back down to 0, and the ability was obviously not on cooldown, which ant he did not have to use Phase Reset. While he preferred to save it for a life-and-death situation, he also understood that it was now the only possible way he could keep running. As things were, he was about to collapse from exhaustion any second. In fact, he was already starting to lose speed.
There was no other choice.
Zach activated Unleashed Phase.
Right away, his hands and feet began giving off the impossibly black smoke that he had beco so accustod to, and his body took on a dull shine, though it was almost impossible to see thanks to the even brighter shine from the sun above. But most importantly was the imdiate, total rejuvenation he felt as every last bit of his missing stamina refilled in an instant, though he paid for it with the ti remaining on his current duration.
And now, once again, he broke his record for the "most amount of ti ever deducted" when entering into Unleashed Phase. The ability, which would begin with 15 full minutes while perfectly at rest, started off with more than a third of it spent just in refilling his stamina.
Unleashed Phase Duration
9:32 Remaining
Zach didn't think that this was rely a product of him being more exhausted than he'd ever been before. He was sure there were tis when he'd felt even worse and had entered Unleashed Phase with several additional minutes; no, this was actually more likely a piece of concrete evidence that his stamina really was increasing, as his ability was now diminishing more of its duration in replenishing it to full.
As my stamina grows, I'll lose more ti when I use it exhausted.
At any rate, while Zach's stamina, determination, and will to continue on might have been revitalized, the ability did nothing to aid with hydration or the depletion of other resources, such as electrolytes. And this was a problem that would get worse extrely quickly in this heat. And so, while eyeing the train ahead of him, he activated Phase Blink.
Usually, Phase Blink took him from stationary to sothing faster than the speed of sound, and the result was a sense of being "teleported" ahead. But this had not been the case when he'd been flying in low orbit over the planet, and once again, it ceased to be the case now.
Like the last ti he'd used this ability, he had the sense of being pushed rather than "teleported." Briefly, his speed tripled, and a loud bang could be heard in the distance as the train ca closer into view: perhaps only a mile away now. However, unlike in space, Zach was not able to "keep" the speed increase that the ability provided. The mont after he used it, he returned to the exact sa speed he'd been running before its activation.

Zach now had under seven minutes until the quest failed, and just above nine minutes on Unleashed Phase. He needed to hurry! While continuing to run and sweat profusely, he activated Phase Blink again, and once more, the sensation Zach had was of being pushed. And yet, visually, the opposite was true. To his eyes, it almost looked like the train was moving towards him rather than him moving towards the train. But either way, the result was the sa. He was getting closer!
He activated Phase Blink again and again, and now, he was only about a thousand feet—or a fifth of a mile—from car 7. He also had a much better look at it, and Zach could see his earlier antics had not left car 7 unscathed. Actually, it was a miracle it was still attached to the train at all.
Half of the car was missing, and it honestly looked like a gigantic saw had fallen out of the sky and unevenly sliced it apart, as there were jagged pieces of rough, sharp-looking tal, as well as pieces of foam, along with intact seat cushions regularly falling out. It was also sowhat tipped over, and the bottom of it was now sending out a constant, never-ending shower of sparks as it made a high-pitched screech from grinding against the tal rails.
But there was sothing else, too. Sothing that gave Zach hope. Towards the door that led to car 6, there were two archers—just like there had been in car 9. And this mattered because Zach, who was already becoming exhausted again in trying to catch up, realized he now had a way of saving an imnse amount of ti and energy.
For the first ti in almost a year, Zach pulled up the description of his ability, Phase Blink, which popped up on a screen of information to his left and slightly above him.

Description
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
User dashes forward at the speed of sound. Cannot be used to travel through non-transparent walls. If used with a target enemy, Phase Blink transports the user behind target enemy. User is invincible while blinking through harmful attacks, effects, hazardous materials, dangerous substances, magic, curses, and extre temperatures.
"If used with a target," Zach said aloud, panting. He'd used it that way before. He disliked it, however, because the ability about-faced him faster than the speed of sound, which made him dizzy and nauseous. Regardless, the fact that it could be used in such a way was not new to him or surprising.
What was surprising, and what he'd never really "considered" before, was just how incredible it was that the ability had 800 range, which was about 800 feet. Although he'd acquired this ability during a ti of ergency—he'd been desperately racing through Yorna's trying to save Rian and Lienne—he'd considered it a simple ability and, content that he understood how it worked, had not felt the need to read its description over again since.
But that had been at a ti when he hadn't yet been able to appreciate just how powerful certain "aspects" of abilities were. In fact, once upon a ti, he'd even thought Boundless was a crappy ability despite it being among his best. In those days, a far less experienced Zachys Calador had been envious of Kalana's abilities, like that one that called teorites down. Despite the fact that he was panting and huffing, Zach actually chuckled at the sheer stupidity of thinking there was anything special about such a basic magical ability—one that couldn't even be used indoors.
Zach had been so clueless about the things that actually mattered that he had even beco depressed over his "shitty" abilities. But now, he knew differently. Now, he understood that "big explosion" or "bright lights" did not make an ability great. No, it was the utility of an ability that made it great. And in the case of Phase Blink, the fact that it could be used to move 800 range, but only if used with a target, was sothing he really needed to keep in mind from now on because, when used without one, he estimated it only sent him about 150 feet forward, if even that.
Zach unsheathed his Primordial Void Blade from the scabbard on his back and then held it in his right hand as he pumped his left arm while he sprinted. And now, forcing his body to give him just a "bit more," Zach grunted and panted as he started to gain on the train, albeit slowly. As he did so, he ntally targeted the blue-skinned, blonde-haired archer hiding behind the seat to the right side of the door. He was able to see it due to half the seat having been blown apart.

Much as he did when trying to capture a card, Zach began ntally spamming Phase Blink while keeping that creature targeted in his mind. And this, he continued to do as he moved closer and closer.
Phase Blink! Phase Blink! Phase Blink! Phase Blink!
Over and over, he "activated" the ability, which continued to fail, until it didn't—until the distance between himself and it shrank to either exactly 800 or slightly below. And then, at a speed that was fast enough that it once more, visually, looked to be no different from teleportation, Zach found himself suddenly looking back upon the direction of the desert where he had just been running, only now, he was standing perfectly still—with the archer's back to him.
Shifting to a two-handed grip on his sword, he made a powerful forward lunge and thrust the blade such that it went right through the creature's spine, dealing 521,222 damage and causing it to bend backward. Then, shifting his eyes to the right and noticing that Vengalaurn Archer A was about to open fire on him, Zach released his grip on his sword, grabbed Archer B's shoulders, and forcibly spun the creature around and in front of him like a shield.
The creature now suffered an additional 922,311 damage as the crossbow bolt went right through its left eye and even struck Zach's shoulder blade, though it only went in a few inches and failed to nick any vital organs. Nothing Passive HP Regeneration wouldn't be able to take care of.
Zach rely pulled it out as the mob turned into green, oozing bubbles and steam. His sword, which had been lodged in the creature's back, made a small clack as it fell to the floor. Zach retrieved it and then tore apart Vengalaurn Archer A as it attempted to reload.

Pressed for ti, Zach kicked down both doors on both sides of the walkway, and then he swore as car 6 contained an axe-wielding raider as well as two more archers in their usual spots. Yet sohow, through so combination of skill and luck, Zach was able to swing his blade twice in succession and cut both crossbow bolts out of the air before either could strike him. Afterwards, he knew he needed to work fast in order to kill the raider before they had ti to reload their crossbows, and so, even as the mob charged at him, he shouted out, "Phase Slash!"
Swinging his blade diagonally downwards, the high-pitched, zipper-like screech preceded the rippling distortion in the air, which slamd into the raider's chest and dealt a shocking—but also satisfying—923,311 damage. It also left a sizzling, giant hole in the mob's chest, one Zach could actually see through.
Running forward, Zach activated Halting Strike and crossed his sword with the raider's axe; the result was a successful half-second stun, which gave Zach just enough ti to deliver two more slices into its neck, killing it.

He had just five minutes left. Ti was running out! Rather than kick, Zach ran into the first door, knocking it down with his shoulder blade. He continued running across the small, chained-off walkway, and then he ramd down the second door, causing it to flip and fly several feet into car 5 before falling into the middle of the aisle.
This ti around, there were more of those shamans: four of them. Each one of them was at the opposite end of the car, and all cast their magic on him the mont he entered. This ant four mucus-like balls flying through the air towards him, and all on a trajectory such that they would land on him at the exact sa ti.
Zach waited for the instant before he was hit, and then he activated Phase Blink while targeting the shaman farthest from him to the left. He reappeared facing in the opposite direction—towards the shaman's back. This caused the shaman, as well as the three others, to begin fleeing in the other direction as though to gain distance to use their magic. Zach refused to let them get any sort of distance from him. He pursued and made them pay.
Expending a whole lot of energy, he lashed out with a wild series of swings with his sword, cutting them to pieces as they continued to run away. He kept close, chasing them halfway across the aisle by the ti he'd managed to get the last of them down. Now, he was covered in their blood. But at least they were dead, and the job was done.

There really didn't seem to be anything in this car. Zach shrugged, sprinted down the aisle, and slamd his foot into the next door, kicking it hard enough that it not only knocked off its hinges but managed to take out the door opposite as well, clearing a path for him to storm car 3.
"Adventurer!" a single Vengalaurn Raider cried out, its voice harsh. "I have no idea how you made it this far, but you won't stop us from looting this train!"
Zach raised his blade and bent his knees as the mob charged at him. "Co on, I don't have ti for you!" he shouted as it slamd its axe down on top of him. Yet even as Zach struggled against the mob's two-handed axe, which was on top of his sword, his eyes shifted to the ti.

He just…he couldn't afford to get tied up with this damn thing! Zach shoved it away from him and then deliberately turned his body, removed one hand from his sword, and punched a hole into the right side of the car. Then, as the mob ca at him, he sheathed his blade and ran forward, tackling it while wrapping his arms around the mob's arms to prevent it from swinging its weapon. Squeezing tightly, he lifted the mob, whirled his body in a half circle, and then released it, throwing the Gods-be-damned thing out of the train. Zach watched as it landed on the sand and was gone from his view in an instant.
No XP, sure, but one less problem to deal with.
He continued on.
Breaking into car 2, Zach found that this one was also empty. Yet as he ran his way down the aisle, the doors to car 1 exploded open all on their own, and this ti, sothing ca to him for once.
The boss.
"Well, well, well," the boss said as it strolled into car 2. It was short, four-feet-tall, and blue-skinned just like its compatriots. It also wielded an axe that was almost identical to the ones the raiders had used against Zach. But what made it different was the twirly mustache on his face and the fact that its shoulder armor was made from so kind of fur. Other than that, it was mostly unremarkable. For the mont, it stood just in front of the door on the other end of the aisle. Zach was still in front of his own door all the way across the car, though his was lying on the floor.
"So, you thought you could stop and my boys, huh?" he asked. "Well, you've just made a big mistake. Here's why. Right now, I…"
As the boss spoke, Zach grabbed his card out of his inventory and placed it down onto the seat to his right so that he could hold his sword with both hands.

The mob shut up imdiately, released a roar, and began charging down the aisle at him. Zach grabbed his card, summoned it, and then sent his own T3 boss out to clash with the one moving towards him. The two collided, and they were almost perfectly matched, with his taller, green-skinned, tusk-nosed card viciously striking out with its electrical blade and the blue-skinned, axe-wielding boss trading strikes with its axe.
Half the attacks by his card were either evaded or blocked, and the sa was true of the boss. But those that did hit did a fair bit of damage. In total, the boss seed just the tiniest bit stronger. And though Zach probably had aggro, it simply could not get around his card to reach him.
His card cut a hole in the boss's chest, striking for 422,311.
The boss retaliated, hitting his card in the side of the face with his axe and causing blood to spray off to Zach's left and onto the wall, dealing 502,441 in the process.

Okay, I think I'm good.
Zach stood back up and lifted his head. He nodded.
Bending his knees, he jumped straight up until his body slamd and went right through the roof of the train car. Imdiately, the scalding desert air blasted into him in the form of an intense wind. Running a few steps forward, Zach then stomped down on the roof, creating another hole, which he dropped down inside of.
He was now behind the boss. He drew his blade.
As his card continued to duel with the boss from the front, Zach began repeatedly stabbing his sword over and over into the boss's back with all his might, hitting for between 2- to 300k per stab. He also struck multiple tis per second. Once again, he beca exhausted and started to pant as he dished out more than 1.5-million damage to his foe, who at last turned around and aggroed onto him once more.
Now, Zach slowly kited him backwards while swinging around his blade to guard against the nurous axe strikes sent his way. Each hit was forceful and heavy, but his grip was firm. Clack, clack, clack. He deftly moved his arms around, guarding against each and every strike, all while his card unleashed nurous combinations into the boss's back with its electrical blade.
By the ti Zach was near the walkway that led to car 1, the boss was a bloody ss. Its head was practically upside down and hanging onto its shoulders by a thread, both of its eyes were missing, and there was so much blood on it that none of its facial features could still be discerned.

Zach, so exhausted he could barely keep standing, nodded in appreciation. This was a level-up that he felt pretty good about. Well, at least compared to his last few. Eighteen points into strength? Okay, he'll take it. Though, right now, he felt pretty damned run-down and not at all strong.
Gods, it's so fucking hot in this car, he thought.
It was his fault, as he'd blasted two holes in the roof, which was letting in all the hot desert air. And with all the doors separating cars having been blasted or knocked down, the onboard air-conditioning didn't stand a chance.
Walking into car 1, Zach saw that it was still 97 degrees in here. But you know what? That was still, like, almost 100 degrees cooler than it was on the outside. Making his way all the way to the front of the car, the temperature did in fact drop to around 88, which was as good as he was going to get. Had he kept the doors intact, it might've been closer to 70. But still, this was tolerable.
Glancing over his shoulder, he watched as his wounded card followed him inside. With millions of HP missing, Zach couldn't even think of dismissing it right now, as he'd then have to pay for its missing HP with stamina that he was too tired to offer up. Actually, doing so might actually kill him. Not for good, of course—thanks to his Resurrection Totem—but he was in no rush to spend this one. Hopefully, he could make this one last at least a few days.
My first one lasted like five minutes, he thought with a laugh.
Zach lay down onto his back on the padded seats. "Wake up when we get there," he said to his card.
He closed his eyes and dozed off. Finally, he had so peace—and would hopefully continue to have it for the next 350 miles or so. He drifted off to the sound of the train rolling along on the tracks while filtering out the screech from car 7, which was still scraping along the rail and sending up sparks.
