Chapter 1081: Chapter 1081: Consider This Marriage Proposal
“Who did you hear about the Ninth Miss from? How co it’s such a coincidence that the mont our family is engaged with the commandery mansion, you overhear those idle gossips while having tea?”
He asked.
“I…”
Upon hearing his words, Madam Zhou’s face turned green, and she was completely flustered.
After thinking it over carefully, she still couldn’t figure out who the two people behind the screen, who had been speaking those words, might be.
“I didn’t see anyone, I just heard them talking there.”
Hearing her response, Old Master Zhou’s face turned utterly dark, “Are you stupid? You believe those words without seeing anyone? It’s obvious they knew you were going to the teahouse and deliberately waited there to catch you!”
And his wife had indeed taken the bait, turning the issue into a major incident without leaving any room for maneuver.
“But what they said wasn’t false. You heard it today too, the lady of the commandery didn’t deny it,” Madam Zhou argued stubbornly.
Upon hearing this, Old Master Zhou took a deep breath.
He finally realized what was wrong with this matter—it was very likely soone who resented their Zhou family had deliberately set a trap for them.
“Madam, have you offended anyone recently?” he glanced at Madam Zhou, inquiring.
“Who could I have offended? Do you think I am such a person?” Madam Zhou, questioned by him, imdiately beca indignant.
Ever since the engagent with the commandery mansion was settled, she had been delighted. Why would she go around offending anyone? All she was thinking about was how to spread the good news to everyone, to make others envy her.
“If we’re talking about offending sobody, it would only be the Lin Family. You know how that little wretch Lin Caisang has given
dirty looks several tis. I have been thinking of getting rid of her for more than a day or two.”
“The Lin Family?”
Old Master Zhou pondered for a mont, then shook his head.
“With the Lin Family’s modest ans, they couldn’t possibly know about the commandery’s affairs. It’s not them.”
Who else could it be?
Perhaps, it was his own wife showing off all the ti outside, offending those people unintentionally, and so they ca up with such a huge trap for them to fall into!
“Stop worrying about who brought this matter to . Think about how to break off this engagent instead!” Madam Zhou urged when she saw him still contemplating.
She didn’t care who she had offended out there; she just wanted to break off the engagent. Everything else was secondary.
“Still thinking of calling off the engagent? Forget it!”
Old Master Zhou glared at her, speaking out.
“What?!”
Madam Zhou almost jumped at his words.
“Have you gone mad? That woman is not decent at all. If our Liang marries her, how will he ever live a good life?”
“He’ll live as one must!” Old Master Zhou said impatiently.
“Things have already co to this. If you want to call off the engagent, you might as well not stay in Yejun anymore and move sowhere else!”
Even if that happened, as the governor of Yejun, he would certainly have connections with other commandery mansions. With just one word from him, which governor wouldn’t give him face?
They wouldn’t be able to survive anywhere!
He had no intention of letting his life be uprooted for the sake of one woman, making the rest of his life wretched. That would be even less worthwhile.
“I…”
Madam Zhou opened her mouth, at a loss for words.
“So we’re really settling for this?”
“What else do you want to do?” Old Master Zhou glared at her, retorting.
