The heavy thud of hurried footsteps echoed as Kai, Ryan, and Jay stord into the room, their faces etched with concern. Their gazes darted to the arrow, then to Es, who stood eerily composed beside the sofa.
They froze, stunned.
The arrow’s proximity to where she had been sitting was unsettling. Yet Es remained unfazed, her presence commanding even in the wake of danger. She reached out, wrapping her slender fingers around the arrow’s shaft, and with one smooth motion, pulled it free.
Her sharp eyes examined it closely, and sothing caught her attention—a glint of tal nestled at the base of the shaft. A mory card, cleverly affixed and nearly hidden.
Interesting, she thought, turning the arrow in her hand.
Without a word, she detached the small device, holding it up to the light. It wasn’t an attempt on her life. The arrow’s placent and the clean execution made that clear. Whoever sent this wasn’t here to kill—they wanted her to find this. A warning? A clue? Or perhaps an invitation?
Es’s lips curled into the faintest hint of a smile as she pocketed the mory card, her composure unnerving to her stunned onlookers. She understood the intricacies of this move, the subtlety behind its execution. Whoever had done this knew her well enough to anticipate her reaction, to deliver a ssage in a way she wouldn’t ignore.
Kai, Ryan, and Jay exchanged wary glances, but Es gave no sign of distress. Instead, her calm was almost chilling. The enemy had made their move. Now, it was her turn to respond.
Without sparing a glance at her rattled companions, she straightened her posture and walked out of the hall towards her room, her mind already working through the possibilities.
The brothers retreated to their rooms, their footsteps fading as Isaac closed the door behind him. Es took a mont to steady herself, her fingers grazing the smooth surface of the mory card tucked into her pocket. Her calm facade never wavered, but her mind worked like clockwork, analyzing the situation from every angle. The arrow, the card, the intent—none of it felt random.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft sound. She turned just in ti to see the hidden door in her room slide open. The concealed passageway, which linked her room to the brothers’, was a secret only they shared. It was a failsafe Es had insisted on, a ans for them to reach each other in monts of need without alerting the outside world.
Kai and Jay erged from the shadows, their expressions a blend of concern and quiet urgency. Ryan and Ray were elsewhere, handling their own tasks, but these two had co the mont they sensed sothing was amiss.
Kai’s golden eyes t hers, searching for any sign of injury. "Are you alright?" he asked, his tone steady but laced with worry. Beside him, Jay crossed his arms, his sharp gaze flicking over her as if to confirm her well-being himself.
"I’m fine," Es replied, her voice calm, almost soothing. "It was just a ssage, not a threat."
But Kai’s eyes lingered on her for a mont longer, his skepticism clear. He trusted her strength but worried about what she might be hiding. Jay gave a curt nod, his silence speaking volus.
Es turned away, walking purposefully toward her desk. From her pocket, she retrieved the small mory card she’d extracted from the arrow and slotted it into a USB adapter. The brothers moved closer, standing on either side of her as she plugged it into her laptop.
The screen flickered to life, and the three of them leaned in as the video began to play.
At first, it showed a familiar scene—a parking lot bathed in dim evening light. Es imdiately recognized it as the lot from the day of the party. Her car stood in the center of the fra, parked neatly, its sleek design unmistakable.
The footage zood in slightly, and a figure entered the fra. The person was dressed in all black, their face obscured by a mask. They moved with deliberate intent, their steps calculated as they approached Es’s car.
The masked individual pulled sothing from their pocket—a small vial of liquid—and unscrewed the cap. They opened the car’s hood, pouring the contents into the engine compartnt with practiced ease. The liquid glinted ominously in the faint light, its purpose clear.
Once the task was complete, the person slamd the hood shut with an unsettling finality. But instead of leaving, they turned directly toward the cara, as if they knew it was there.
Es’s breath caught, her sharp eyes narrowing as the figure tilted their head, pausing dramatically. And then, unexpectedly, they made a ridiculous gesture—a mock salute—before breaking into a bizarre dance.
Kai and Jay stiffened, their confusion mirroring Es’s. The masked figure began hopping like a monkey, flailing their arms in exaggerated movents. Then they transitioned into waddling like a duck, their hands forming makeshift wings.
"What the—" Jay muttered under his breath, his usual stoicism cracking slightly.
The absurd display continued, the figure’s movents both mocking and deliberate. They ended their performance by turning toward the cara, forming a heart shape with their hands, and holding it there for a mont too long. Then, with an exaggerated bow, they stepped out of the fra, leaving the footage to fade to black.
The room was silent. Es’s lips pressed into a thin line as she processed what she had just seen.
"This wasn’t just a warning," she finally said, her voice cool but laced with irritation. "This was personal."
Kai’s jaw tightened, his golden eyes gleaming with quiet fury. Jay crossed his arms, his stance rigid. "Whoever it was," he said in a low voice, "they wanted you to know they weren’t afraid of being seen."
Es leaned back in her chair, her mind already racing. The masked figure hadn’t just sabotaged her car—they had made a spectacle of it. The ssage was clear: I’m watching, and I’m not afraid to play gas.
But Es wasn’t one to play by anyone else’s rules. If this was their idea of a challenge, they had no idea what they had just unleashed.
