Liam stared at the sorry excuse of a stepfather for Veronica. He knew sooner or later one of them would approach him about money or pretend to care about Veronica.
Evelyn had pushed the limit so she settled on her husband.
"You need to make an appointnt to speak to and my ti is already taken up. Try again," Liam said, proceeding on his way.
Henry twisted the hat in his hands. When Veronica got married to this man, he thought his money problems would be over but how long was it since Liam offered him money? He couldn’t rember the last ti.
"I am here to talk about my daughter," Henry inford Liam.
Liam’s laughter was the response to what Henry said. "Your daughter? That is what you are calling her now? After how many years of knowing her do you now want to call Veronica your daughter? Before you knew we were dating, it was always Evelyn’s daughter. Have it stay that way."
Henry could save the diocre act of a father worrying about his daughter for soone else. This wasn’t a stranger new to the Harper family.
"At first, I thought it was strange for Veronica to wait until we were alone to just hold my hands but the tis that one of you reached out to her gave insight into how she was excluded from that family and only beca anyone’s daughter when you found so use for her," said Liam.
Liam vividly rembered the night he spent over at Veronica’s apartnt and the chain of ssages left on her phone. He felt guilty about prying into what caused her mood to change for the rest of the night but he didn’t regret it. Seeing how they treated her made him more protective.
"I don’t know what she told you but I cared for her like she was my own," Henry argued.
Liam noticed how they still thought Veronica went around bashing their na to him when in reality, Veronica rarely spoke about her family. If not for soone else saying the Harper na when they were in college, he wouldn’t have linked right away who Veronica was.
"You’re dismissed," Liam told the two n behind him. His life was already questioned in the news and this drama didn’t need to be added now.
Liam waited until the two n left to continue. "You’re not welco here. Veronica is the one with mory loss and that doesn’t an all the things you’ve done in the past need to be forgotten so you get to start over with her."
Henry fought back the need to argue with Liam. He was around the sa age as Liam’s father so to have Liam speaking to him like this bothered him. "My wife did so thinking and regretted the way she was with Veronica. I am not proud of how my wife treated Veronica. She should get down on her knees and apologise."
Henry only needed Evelyn to be like a little assistant for Liam for a little. It was a tempting offer Liam would not be able to refuse. When else would he get to see Evelyn down on her knees when she was so prideful?
"No need," Liam rejected the offer. "What do I need to have your family understand that my wife only wanted you to leave her alone? You only co when you want money so what is it now? Is it still the building you want to buy? Is that it?"
"We’re just under five hundred thousand short," Henry said, not seeing it as too much to ask for from a man like Liam.
Adeline had offered the family far more to stop the wedding from happening. If Veronica had listened then Henry wouldn’t be looking for ways to buy the building without having to think of selling what he owned now.
"You’ve got to be desperate to co to and ask for it after how you treated my wife. Not your wife or niece, how you treated my wife," Liam said, pointing to Henry.
Liam had a bone to pick with each one of them. Henry wasn’t innocent in Veronica’s ill-treatnt.
Liam closed the gap between him and Henry. "The police work a little too slow for my liking and I know you crafted that story well about how all of you were together the day she ended up in that water. If I find out one of you had a hand in my wife almost dying, I won’t leave it up to the police to solve."
Henry laughed at Liam’s failed attempt to scare him. It was stupid to threaten soone out in the open like this. The employees weren’t close enough to hear them but all Henry needed was for them to see how Liam was speaking to him.
"You’re getting ahead of yourself, trying to be soone you are not. My family was together that day and was shocked by the news of where she was found. I couldn’t get her to go on my boat with us in the past. It ca as a surprise to to find that she went on one again. Instead of blaming us, think of how bad it must have been to be your wife," said Henry.
Henry knew he wasn’t the only one in this world puzzled by how the two got together and didn’t want them to stay together. It was embarrassing for Veronica to swoop in to get Liam when he had been pushing Beth on arranged dates.
"You should take my advice. It might just save you," Liam said, keeping the response short. "This city has changed over the years. There are caras all around these days. At the crossing, outside stores, and dash cams. You need to be careful where you roam and with who. Get out of my building."
Liam rested his hands in his pockets and just as he turned to leave he said, "If you keep annoying like this, I might buy that building and raise the price of it."
Henry frowned. The building was too much money for soone to buy it without any use. Liam didn’t have any idea what was occurring around the area where the building was. There was a lot to gain from having a building there and if Liam raised the price, his chances of getting it were gone.
"Where is that woman?" Henry muttered, needing to see Veronica instead of Liam. She was the one he could use.
Regardless of what anyone said, he was owed sothing for years of taking care of a child that wasn’t his.
