Chapter 98: Chapter 98
"When were you going to tell
about this? This entire ti I thought none of us had anything to do with it and I lied to the police that we were all together just so I wouldn’t have to put up with them again but then you co and tell
this. Where is the phone?" Henry asked, infuriated by Beth’s confession.
Henry didn’t need this now. If she did anything stupid then there wasn’t much he could do for her if Liam were onto her. He never expected Beth to be involved in what happened to Veronica. It wasn’t like her to know about sothing so serious and not at least tell him.
"I could have helped you to get rid of it," said Henry.
"I was scared," Beth cried, her makeup ruined by her tears. "I thought I could get rid of it myself. I really didn’t do anything to her. We were just going to et and then I happened to see soone take her."
Beth had been troubled by imagining herself being the one to push Veronica like she did when they were children. Why wasn’t her uncle feeling for what she felt now? Beth was scared that she could be pulled into sothing that didn’t have to do with her.
"You should have told
that you knew sothing!" Henry yelled, losing control of his anger. He didn’t care that this was Beth he was yelling at. "From the start, he was telling
about caras all over the city and now he ntioned the phone to you. He must have known. You’re too careless, Beth. You should have handed over the phone and be done with this."
Beth did not think she was involved too much. She only witnessed sothing and picked up a phone. "But it is not like I tried to kill her. Soone else did-"
"It’s the fact that you lied and had her phone. She’s surrounded by all these big nas so if one of them tried to kill her then they would pass on the suspicion to you. If you had told
what you knew from the beginning then I could have told you the smart thing to do," said Henry.
Henry would have long had the phone destroyed and placed far away from them.
"Evelyn might not like this," Henry said since it involved two won she raised. "This is why you should have spoken up. Now she might misunderstand what you did. I don’t think we should tell her about the phone. We need to figure out sothing about Liam in secret."
Beth wiped her eyes. "But if we tell Evelyn, won’t she want to find a way to help ? She wouldn’t want to see
dragged into this."
"We’re talking about her daughter here," Henry tried to explain.
That didn’t matter in Beth’s eyes. "I’m the one she loves, not Veronica. Evelyn has always seen
as her daughter and you know that she hates Veronica."
"That’s still her daughter," Henry repeated. "I used to fight with my old man and want him to disappear so I could get my hands on his business but deep down, I still loved him and hated when he died. If soone close to
knew sothing about his death and didn’t tell , I would hate them."
Beth still believed that Evelyn would be on her side. It wasn’t like she hurt Veronica. She only took a phone.
Beth had been wary of Evelyn leaving her for Veronica but then she had to think back to her ti with Evelyn. Evelyn had always loved her more and ignored Veronica. Why would she turn her back on her now?
"She wants to remain in your good graces so she wouldn’t betray . I shouldn’t have doubted her," Beth said, regretting how she treated Evelyn recently. She didn’t want to lose the second mother given to her. "We need sothing to use against Liam to get him to shut up. I told you to look for Veronica’s father."
"I forgot about that. It’ll cost
a bit to find him fast and bring him here to the city. It might silence them a bit but not for long," Henry said, knowing they couldn’t fully trust this plan. It might just anger Liam if he found out they brought Veronica’s father here.
"Still, I think it is worth bringing her father here. Put the focus on that instead. I still don’t understand how he knew about
having the phone. No one was around then and I don’t think there were caras. Do you think he would stop if I put it in his hands?" Beth asked, wanting this to be over with.
Beth hadn’t told Henry what he did with Nora. She didn’t feel like there was a reason to. So what if she spoke to soone who Liam might have had an affair with? Why was he so close to other won? It wouldn’t upset him if he wasn’t doing sothing wrong.
"I doubt it. He’s been against us from the start because of Veronica. You said you had it put away sowhere good. Regardless of him knowing you have it, we can still dispose of it. Or," Henry frowned, realising sothing. "Does he have it? He wouldn’t ntion it to you unless he has it or he’s stupid."
Henry looked back to check if they were being followed by anyone. Why hadn’t he thought of this before? Liam might know Beth had it but did he have it or was he going to tail them to see where they would get it from?
Liam wasn’t going to be stupid about this. He had a reason for ntioning the phone to Beth.
"That’s impossible. I have it put away in our ho. For him to get it, he would have to send soone in but we can call the police-’
"To also ntion that he is stealing a missing phone from a big case? You’re not thinking at all, Beth. If he has the phone, we can’t report it to anyone. You’ll need to explain how you got it and then it’ll co out that our story was a lie. You’ve screwed us," Henry said, disappointed by Beth. She was the last person he would expect this from.
"Why did you hide what you knew? She took Liam and I know you hated the way she spoke to Evelyn but the two of you have been close. Do you hate her so much that you would put yourself in this predicant? Why do you trust that no one saw you and they won’t co after you?" Henry asked.
Beth should have thought this through. Her life could be in danger and his as well since she ntioned she was certain it was soone from Liam’s family or Liam himself.
Henry placed his finger in his mouth to bite at the nail. He did not need this now when life was starting to get back on track. Beth placed him in a difficult position when he didn’t have a good relationship with the Sterlings or Smiths.
"Get out and find the phone now to bring it to . I need to see that it’s still here. What are those idiots doing?" Henry muttered, annoyed by the car that skated off beside them. "Why are they driving so reckless?"
This area was starting to be not to his liking.
Beth got out of the car and hurried inside to look for the phone. It had to be there. It should be. She thought of the last ti she looked at it and it was the day ssages ca from a woman nad Julia. She hadn’t checked on the phone daily since nothing ever happened and no one had any reason to search her room.
Henry made it inside the elevator with Beth.
The ride in the elevator was silent since they were both worried about whether they would find the phone.
Beth hurried out of the elevator and made her way inside their ho. "Evelyn!" She called.
There wasn’t a response.
Beth had to worry about Evelyn later as she made her way to her room. She opened the door and went straight to the drawer where she kept the phone. Beth’s heart sank when the phone wasn’t where she put it.
Beth ran her fingers through her hair not knowing what to do.
"Well?" She heard Henry say behind her. What was she to tell him? "Where is the phone?"
Beth looked around her room to check if she had placed it anywhere else without rembering it but the phone wasn’t in her room. "It’s gone. What do I do now? How did he get in here? I- Evelyn,’ she concluded.
Henry shook his head. He didn’t think Evelyn was involved in this. She was smart to tell him about Liam approaching her and he doubted that Liam would secretly go to Evelyn. He was confident in these two things. Soone else was here or maybe Beth was just too careless with it and misplaced it without rembering.
"You will find that phone fast if you know what’s good for you. You’ve put us in danger. Not a word of this to Evelyn," he ordered Beth. "I need to find sothing to get them off our backs for now. You better hope that finding her father works."
