Shropshire, Early May 1781

The charter had been signed. The ink was barely dry, yet already the n of Imperial Dynamics spoke of nothing else but the railways.

Phillip returned from London with the docunt tucked in his case like a weapon of war. In the forge yard, the cheers of victory had faded into the steady clamor of work. For if Parliant’s word was law, it was also burden. They had promised five hundred miles of rails, three great arteries of comrce, and they had only a handful of months to begin.

On the first Monday of May, Phillip called his staff into the drafting hall. The long oak table was covered with parchnt rolls, steel rulers, and brass compasses. Candles smoked in the corners, though sunlight poured in through the tall windows.

Henry Carter stood at his right, sleeves rolled, a quill already in hand. Around the table clustered foren, surveyors, carpenters, and smiths.

Phillip tapped the charter with his finger. "Gentlen, Parliant has agreed. Now the real work begins. We will not speak of it as a dream any longer. It is law, and we shall make it iron."

The n leaned forward, listening.

"The first section is London to Birmingham," Phillip continued, unrolling a large parchnt map. Black ink traced rivers and hills, while red chalk marked the proposed line. "One hundred and ten miles. Parliant expects ground broken within the year. That ans surveys, foundries, timber, and n."

A surveyor nad Ellis cleared his throat. "The land, sir... we’ll need to chart every rise and hollow. Rails won’t run over hills like wagons. Cuttings, embanknts, viaducts—each mile will demand decisions."

Phillip nodded. "Aye. And that is why you’ll leave at once. Two teams, riding out tomorrow. Mark the land, sketch the ground. Bring elevations and distances. Every curve we set in ink now will save us gold later."

Henry added, "And Parliant will want reports. Gentlen, keep your asurents exact. A crooked line will not win us funds for the next stage."

The carpentry foreman raised his calloused hand. "Rails need sleepers, sir. For a hundred miles we’ll need thousands upon thousands of timbers. Where are we to find so much wood?"

Phillip had prepared that answer. "We’ve secured supply rights from crown forests near Nottingham. Timber shall be cut and seasoned through sumr. Your task will be shaping them—uniform, straight, tarred for weather. We’ll build sawpits here in the yard, but larger mills will rise near the route itself."

The smiths muttered among themselves, calculating the work.

"And the rails?" asked Thomas, the foundry master. His thick beard was still dusted with soot.

Phillip spread another drawing. It showed cross-sections of rails, each like an elongated "I."

"Not wood, not cast iron. Steel. Our steel." He tapped the lines. "Four inches across, three inches deep. Each length twelve feet. A mile requires four hundred of them, and each weighs near eighty pounds. Gentlen, we shall pour rivers of steel before this is done."

A low whistle passed through the room.

Thomas folded his arms. "That ans more converters, my lord. Three won’t be enough. Not for a hundred miles, let alone five hundred."

"Then we build more," Phillip answered simply. "Two new converters at once. A second furnace by midsumr. Shropshire will be our heart, but we’ll raise smaller yards along the line. No engine runs without coal, no rail without steel. We’ll feed both."

There was silence for a mont, the scale of it settling in. Then Henry scribbled notes furiously, already sketching lists of supplies and n.

By mid-May, the yard was a hive.

Teams of carpenters stacked freshly cut oak, stripping bark, seasoning planks. Smiths hamred out sample rails, testing strength against the anvil. Foundry workers laid foundations for two new converters, great pits where molten iron would be turned to steel.

Phillip walked the yard daily, boots crunching over gravel, voice carrying above the roar of furnaces.

"Rivets double-headed! Boilers must hold seventy pounds at least!"

"Keep your gauges steady—if the bore runs off-center, the piston will jam!"

He corrected, instructed, encouraged. To so he gave a hand on the shoulder, to others a sharp rebuke. Not because he sought perfection, but because failure at this stage ant disaster later.

One morning, he found a group of apprentices struggling with a rail mold. The steel had cooled unevenly, leaving the casting warped.

"Too quick with the pour," Phillip told them, crouching beside the crooked length. He held it up against the light. "See here—the edges cooled before the center. That’s why it twisted. You must keep the mold heated before the pour. Try again. Better to waste iron now than rails later."

The boys nodded, chastened but grateful.

By June, the surveyors returned. Their boots were torn, their maps smudged with rain, but their reports were thorough.

"From London northward, the land is kind enough," Ellis reported, spreading his parchnt. "But near Coventry, there are hills. We’ll need a cutting nearly thirty feet deep, else the grade will be too steep for the engine."

Another man pointed to a river crossing. "Here—the Avon. A bridge of timber could serve, but for rails we’ll need stone piers."

Phillip traced the line with his finger. He saw not rivers and hills, but embanknts, viaducts, and bridges. Each obstacle was not a barrier, but a challenge of steel and stone.

"Then we shall cut, and we shall build," he said. "The Romans laid roads across Britain two thousand years ago. We shall lay rails. Where they marched, we will ride."

But not all was smooth.

In July, one of the new boilers ruptured during testing. The seam burst, scalding two n with steam. Neither died, but the yard grew quiet with fear.

Phillip himself inspected the wreckage. He traced the jagged seam with his finger.

"Too thin," he murmured. "One and a half inches, when I said two. This is what cos of haste."

The foreman bowed his head, ashad.

Phillip called the n together. His voice was hard, but clear. "We cannot afford mistakes. A single failure in London will see Parliant rescind the charter. Every rivet, every plate, every joint must hold. Lives depend on it. Our reputation depends on it. England depends on it. Do not cut corners again."

The n nodded, chastened, and work resud with grim determination.

By late sumr, the first hundred yards of true railway lay outside the Shropshire yard. Smooth steel rails bolted to oak sleepers stretched into the distance, gleaming in the sun.

Phillip walked its length with Henry, the sll of tar and iron thick in the air.

Henry kicked the rail lightly with his boot. "A year ago, I’d have called this madness. Now I call it the future."

Phillip smiled faintly. "And this is only the beginning. Soon, London itself will hear the whistle of steam."

He turned back to the yard, where n sweated over furnaces and hamrs rang without rest. For all the noise and smoke, it was the sound of progress.

The Iron Road had begun.
