This was his opportunity to observe an alchemist from another empire. He was genuinely curious about their thods, techniques and pills they refine.
And so, while activating the [Traceless Shadow Advent], he snuck into the cave where the blackthorn alchemist was.
The cave was dimly lit by candles and lanterns. There was a narrow path that led deeper into the cavern. The alchemist was at the end of the cavern, inside a large space. He wore green robes had a balding head, and was sitting cross legged in front of a drum shaped cauldron.
Green light; no green fire consud the area around him and it seed like the entirety of his being was on fire.
"What is he doing?"
As an alchemist who had read three volus of the Great Sage Emperor’s diary, he was not completely unfamiliar with the tactic the alchemist in front of him was using. However, he was still largely unaware of what they were refining.
All he could tell was that the refining technique and the materials the other party was using was definitely not your standard ones, and it had a certain ominous feeling to it.
As if to prove him right, smoke released out of the cauldron in an attempt to flee, took on the shapes of tornted souls. Of course, they were expertly caught by the middle aged man and sucked back into the cauldron.
"This is... he is refining a forbidden pill" Realisation finally struck him when he saw all the corpses in the dark corner of the cave and the materials he used as a catalyst.
Forbidden pills — as the na implies — are taboo creations within the world of alchemy, banned by every major Alchemist Association across the continents. These pills, though potent beyond belief, are outlawed not for lack of efficacy, but for the monstrous cost they demand.
Unlike standard pills and elixirs that are refined from natural treasures and spirit herbs, forbidden pills require the use of living souls, blood essence, or the spirits of sentient beings as their core ingredients.
What’s more, the refinent process was even more cruel. Not only does it torture the entrapped souls, but it also drains them dry like bleeding a body.
The forbidden pills carry imnse strength, allowing practitioners to break through the natural limit of the cultivation and step into new, unknown heights.
Of course, there are also repercussions. As these are pills created through deviant and heartless thods, they carry extre risk. If the alchemist refining the pill isn’t able to properly refine the pill or makes a mistake in between, they run the risk of having their mind corrupted or their cultivation falling.
As for those who consu them, their souls turn into twisted abominations or fall into madness, their cultivation bases imploding, their bodies mutating into monstrous forms.
It is because of all of these reasons that practising forbidding alchemy is strictly prohibited in the alchemist world.
Yang Chen learned all of this from the Great Sage Emperor’s Diary. Of course, the latter did not differentiate between the techniques and the practices. For the latter, alchemy was alchemy.
The Great Sage Emperor was solely focused on understanding the profundity of alchemy and diving deeper into its secrets.
Naturally, Yang Chen who was learning from the latter’s diary, also held such a view. He was not repulsed by the blackthorn alchemist’s techniques and was simply fascinated by it.

"Yeah, I know" still not letting his guard down, Yang Chen observed for a mont before sitting down to refine. His eyes looked at the thing that was passed to him.
At a glance, the thing sitting in his cauldron seed to be a hand. However, it had far too many fingers for that to be true.
