Chapter 70: Damn It, Eating People Again. General, Has That Mouth of Yours Grown Tired of Living?!
...
Lu Zhan shot straight up from the ground.
His entire body turned into a bolt of lightning that tore through the blood-red night sky as he sped toward the direction of the soul brand!
Liao Ming was stunned for a mont when he heard that. Then he realized sothing.
Holy shit!
How dared Bai Yufeng do that?
He could not help exclaiming inwardly. Tonight, Lord Lu would probably take down even the Specter General in one sweep.
Still, that was fine too.
At least Bai Yufeng would have company.
While flying, Lu Zhan checked the system.
[ Ding! Congratulations, Host, on your first kill of a Malicious Specter Realm specter. Reward: 3,000 Slaughter Points. Additional reward: one Marrow Cleansing Pill ]
A Marrow Cleansing Pill?!!
That was good stuff. Even in Great Xia, it was a priceless treasure.
“But Malicious Specter Realm... it looks like specters have their own realm classification too. I just don’t know whether that corresponds to the second major realm or the third.”
Lu Zhan guessed it was probably the third realm.
The creature had been weak, but that was likely because it had only just revived.
If that was the case, then this Specter General was probably not weak at all.
“Good. Take his life while he’s sick.”
As soon as he said that, Lu Zhan sped up once more.
To the southeast of Peach Blossom Alley lay the Yinshan Mountain Range.
The Spiritual Energy there was thin, the air was turbid, and the whole place was perated by an air of decay.
Anyone knowledgeable would know at a glance that this was baleful yin qi.
Suddenly, a voice rang out in the mountains.
“When tracing dragon veins and dividing gold, observe the winding ridges; each fold of the range is a barrier...”
A middle-aged man holding a geomantic compass searched for sothing.
“It should be here. Second Brother, dig down and have a look.”
Clang! Clang! Clang!
In front of an ancient tomb, the sound of pickaxes striking echoed in the night.
No one knew how much ti passed before a joyful voice rang out.
“Boss, that’s right. This is the place...”Soon, the beams of several miner’s lamps pierced through the darkness, illuminating a few faces tense with greed.
“Boss, look at what’s carved on this door... it feels sinister, really sinister... Do you think there might really be so kind of specter inside?”
A tomb raider with a thin, scrawny build pointed shakily at a stone door five ters high.
The stone door was pitch black, and engraved upon it were many ancient soldiers.
But what they held in their hands were human limbs.
Old n, won, children...Blood dripped from the corners of each of their mouths.
Most horrifying of all, they wore eerie smiles and stared straight at whoever looked at them, making one’s skin crawl.
At the center of those soldiers stood a general holding an infant’s severed head, while beneath his feet lay corpses strewn everywhere.
The man the tomb raiders called Boss was a burly brute with a fleshy face and fierce eyes.
His na was Zhao Kui.
At that mont, he stared greedily at the tomb.
Both the specifications of the tomb and the relief carvings on its entrance made one thing clear: the identity of the tomb’s owner was absolutely extraordinary, and the grave goods inside were bound to be astonishingly rich.
“Sinister?”
“Old Fifth, stop muttering that superstitious nonsense all day. A tomb like this is obviously hiding serious treasure. Hurry up and dig. If dawn cos, it’ll be trouble.”
Boss Zhao Kui spat on the ground and urged his n to move faster.
He had been robbing tombs for decades.
Back when he first started, he had still feared such things.
But after doing it long enough, he found that most of it was empty nonsense.
Besides, the five brothers were all fairly strong.
Even if there really was a specter or sothing inside, would their strength not be enough to deal with it?
“Exactly. Old Fifth, you’re just too timid. In our line of work, being timid won’t do. Doesn’t Boss always say you need to be bold but careful?”
Another middle-aged man, the tallest of the group, laughed.
Old Fifth was the youngest, though, so he did not scold him and rely tried to instruct him patiently.
If any of the other three brothers had acted like this, he would already have started cursing them out.
“But Boss, sothing’s wrong. Look at that general’s eyes... why do they feel like they’ve been staring at the whole ti?”
Another man with a thick beard felt a chill crawl over him.
He kept feeling as though the general carved on the relief was about to leap out and devour his soul.
So he hesitantly suggested, “Boss... how about we don’t go into this tomb after all? We still have enough money to last us a while.”
“Bullshit. There’s no such thing as specters in this world. You’re all just scaring yourselves. Hurry up and stop dawdling.”
Zhao Kui was growing irritated.
He personally stepped forward.
“Why aren’t you all getting over here to lend a hand? Wealth is right in front of us. Can you really bear to walk away now? Besides, don’t you know the principle that if you only spend and never earn, even a mountain of wealth will run dry?”
The tomb raiders exchanged glances.
In the end, they could not resist either their boss’s pressure or the lure of treasure, and all stepped forward.
“Give the drill. Give the hydraulic breaker... Third Brother, pry against that stone. I refuse to believe we can’t get this damned stone door open...”
“It’s done!”
Zhao Kui was overjoyed.
At last, they had opened a gap in the stone door large enough for a person to pass through.
Sure enough, no matter how solid a stone door was, it still could not stand against modern technology.
Yet just as they were about to step inside, a cold gust of wind gushed out from within, making Zhao Kui shiver.
And this was sumr.
“Damn it, we’re already here. What’s there to fear? Even if there really is a specter inside, I’ll still pry the gold right out of its mouth.”
Stooping low, he squeezed through the opening.
Beyond the entrance was a vast underground hall.
At the center of the underground palace stood an altar built entirely of piled white bones, and atop that altar rested a coffin.
“Hm? Where’s the gold we were promised? A general this grand can’t possibly have nothing in there, can he?”
Zhao Kui’s expression darkened.
“Boss! Look! Under the altar! There’s sothing there!”
Second Brother had sharp eyes and pointed at the base of the altar.
Jade, precious stones, gold...“Hahaha! We’ve struck it rich! Brothers, we’ve struck it rich!”
Zhao Kui could no longer contain his greed and sprinted toward the altar.
He gathered up piece after piece of treasure.
“So much of it. This should sell for a lot, right? Boss, do you think there might be even more valuable things inside the coffin?”
After all, there was already so much wealth outside it.
So what about inside?
Human nature was greedy to begin with.
When Zhao Kui thought about it, it made sense. The more valuable an item was, the more likely it was to be kept close to the body.
“Second Brother, pack these things up. Third Brother, Fourth Brother, Fifth Brother, give a hand and pry this open.”
“One, two, three, heave!”
“Put your backs into it!”
“With strength like ours, it still takes all of us together to open it. There’s definitely sothing good inside... co on, everyone!”
Zhao Kui was growing more and more excited.
He had no idea what the coffin lid was made of, but it was unbelievably heavy.
Yet the more solemnly it had been sealed, the more it proved the importance of what lay inside.
Creeeak... creeeak... bang!
The heavy coffin lid slamd to the ground with a dull thud.
“Quick, search it. See if there’s any treasure inside...”
“Boss, I think I just saw the corpse blink.”
“Stop talking nonsense. The man’s been dead for ages. How could he possibly—” Third Brother was still scolding him as he reached toward the corpse to search it.
But in the next second, a shriveled hand seized his wrist.
“Ants... how dare you... disturb my slumber... steal my... offerings...”
The voice was like rusted iron scraping against itself.
“Ahhh!”
“A specter!!!”
Third Brother struggled wildly, only to realize he could not move at all.
“Third Brother!”
Although Zhao Kui was terrified, he still drew the blade from his waist and slashed at the Specter General’s hand.
“Damn it, let go of him!”
Zhao Kui’s face twisted savagely.
Clang!
Yet the blow landed as though it had struck steel.
Zhao Kui was horrified. Without the slightest hesitation, he chopped straight through Third Brother’s arm.
Then he dragged Third Brother with him and ran.
“Run!”
The five n fled in panic, but the Specter General floated up from within the coffin.
“Fresh... blood al...”
He looked coldly at the five tomb raiders, then casually reached out and seized the youngest of them, Old Fifth, by the throat.
“Old Fifth! Damn it, I’ll fight you to the death!”
Zhao Kui turned and rushed back.
When the other three saw this, they gritted their teeth.
To hell with it!!!
They all drew their weapons and charged at the Specter General.
The Specter General’s lips curved into an inhuman smile, his eyes full of mockery and cruelty.
He did not put them in his eyes at all.
“Noisy!”
Three streaks of yin qi shot out.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
With just one strike, the Specter General smashed all three of them into the cold walls of the tomb, the sound of bones breaking painfully clear.
The three n instantly lost all power to fight, and it was unclear whether they were alive or dead.
“Shh! This seat hates the wailing of ants most when I am eating.”
The Specter General lifted one finger and made a silencing gesture.
“To die quietly is the greatest rcy this seat grants you...”
His words stopped abruptly.
In the next instant, the great stone doors of the ancient tomb exploded apart.
Dense streaks of dark red saber energy shot in from outside.
“Damn it, eating people again. General, has that mouth of yours grown tired of living?!”
The Specter General’s expression changed drastically. By instinct, he threw Old Fifth aside and crossed his arms in front of himself to defend.
Bang!
The terrifying force slamd him straight into the coffin behind him and hurled him completely off the altar.
He shot to his feet and roared furiously, “Impudent wretch! What demon are you, to dare interrupt this seat’s al? State your na at once!”
