At noon, little Wang Wenzhang lined up and walked to the daycare entrance. Upon seeing his mother waiting, he joyfully shouted, "Mom, Mom!"
He excitedly told the child next to him, "My mom is back!"
Ling Chengyan noticed a difference — in front of little Wang Wenzhang was a pretty little girl with a round face and eyes, wearing a lovely white dress. The girl turned back proactively to talk to Wang Wenzhang, but he didn’t seem interested in responding. He nodded perfunctorily and excitedly turned to talk to the boy behind him, leaving the little girl feeling quite lonely.
The children walked out of the gate, each finding their own parent. Little Wang Wenzhang dashed up like a tiny missile, grabbing Ling Chengyan’s hand, looking up, "Mom, when did you co back? Did you see sister? Did you see dad? Did you see aunt?"
Ling Chengyan raised her hand to ruffle her son’s slightly long hair and smiled, "Not yet, I ca to pick you up right after work."
Knowing he was the first to see his mom, little Wang Wenzhang smiled contentedly.
"Auntie." The little girl’s voice was delicate.
Ling Chengyan turned around to see the adorable little girl in a white dress.
She took out a bar of chocolate from her backpack and handed it to the girl, "What’s your na?"
"Thank you, Auntie." The little girl politely thanked her, accepted the chocolate, and said, "My na is Zhao Siyan. I’m the new kid. I sit next to Wang Wenzhang."
Ling Chengyan glanced at her son who seed a bit awkward, smiled and said, "You’re Wang Wenzhang’s seatmate, that’s great! You two should stick together, be friends and help each other, alright?"
"Uh-huh." The little girl nodded vigorously.
Ling Chengyan exchanged a few pleasantries with the grandma who ca to pick up the little girl. anwhile, Wang Wenzhang was pouting more and more, and couldn’t help but secretly tug on his mom’s hand.
Once it was just the two of them, Ling Chengyan asked her son, "Do you seem to not like Zhao Siyan?"
Wang Wenzhang turned his head away, walked silently for a few steps, and said, "Mom, you don’t know, the little girl cries too much, always tearing up... I’d rather sit next to Liu Xiaopang."
Ling Chengyan raised her eyebrows, smiled silently, not pressing further, and handed her satchel to little Shi Tou, "Inside are chocolates and candies brought back by mom. You’re in charge of distributing them this ti, okay?"
"Really?" Shi Tou was delighted, sowhat disbelievingly asked one more ti, and after receiving confirmation, excitedly ran towards ho with the satchel, urging, "Mom, hurry up, aunt and brother and sister must be ho by now."
It’s Wang Wenzhang’s first ti being entrusted with the power to distribute, excited and proud, he dashed ho, grabbed the candies, and started giving them to aunt, brother, and sisters. Ling Chengyan watched coldly from the side, not interfering.
Then, as they kept distributing, little Shi Tou realized sothing was wrong — there wasn’t enough chocolate.
Little Wang Wenzhang was a bit dumbfounded.
Xiao Hongling and Xiao Xing noticed it too. Xiao Xing counted and imdiately figured out the error, stretched out her hand to tap Shi Tou’s forehead, "You didn’t even count before distributing, mom definitely bought one chocolate for every two people, you gave one to each person, so of course it’s not enough. Are you really mom and dad’s child? You’re really dumb enough to make soone cry."
Wang Wenzhang felt wronged and his eyes reddened, looking back for mom, only to find mom was talking to dad, not sparing him a glance. The little guy suddenly felt so wronged and started to cry loudly.
Only then did Ling Chengyan ’hear’ and ca over, took a handkerchief to wipe Shi Tou’s tears, and asked him why he was crying. Shi Tou sobbed, yet didn’t want to admit he made a mistake. He especially didn’t want to say that sister claid he wasn’t mom and dad’s kid... that he didn’t have mom and dad!
Little Shi Tou was very sad. For lunch, dad made his favorite sweet and sour ribs, but he only ate one piece, unable to eat more.
Wang Liansheng and Ling Chengyan didn’t say much, let the kids eat till they were full, and then each returned to their room for a short nap.
Wang Liansheng had work, so hurriedly left after eating.
The large bedroom held only Ling Chengyan and her son Shi Tou.
Ling Chengyan looked at her son curled up like a little shrimp, and covered him with a small blanket before lying down for a nap herself.
Shi Tou faced away from her, breathing unevenly, and Ling Chengyan didn’t ask.
Before long, the little guy curled his limbs and body, and started to sob again.
Ling Chengyan found it amusing but held back, turned the little guy over, wiped his tears with a handkerchief, and asked, "You just said that kids who cry are not cute, yet you’re crying non-stop?"
Upon hearing this, Shi Tou cried even harder, yet he kept his head low, crying without seeking comfort in mom’s arms.
He thought he wasn’t mom and dad’s child, he didn’t have the right to ask mom for a hug.
He believed he was an orphan without mom and dad, boo-hoo-hoo...
Ling Chengyan actually had overheard the kids’ conversation clearly, but she didn’t rush to explain, aiming to teach her son maturity.
Seeing her little one cry like this, she found it truly sad, and finally relented, pulling his curled body into her arms, wiping his tears, and soothing him, "What’s this about? Didn’t they all return the chocolates for you to redistribute after the mistake was found?"
Little Shi Tou kept his head down crying, without a sound.
Ling Chengyan couldn’t laugh this ti, thought about it, and said, "Is mom’s little Shi Tou unhappy to see mom? Does Shi Tou not want mom?"
"No. I want mom, really want her." Little Shi Tou finally spoke up to explain.
Ling Chengyan quietly breathed a sigh of relief, "Then why are you crying?"
Little Shi Tou wiped his eyes, stayed silent for a mont, and finally spoke of his sister’s words, "Mom, I don’t want to be an orphan... boo-hoo-hoo..."
Ling Chengyan finally laughed, pulled the little one closer into her arms, made him snuggle up, and said, "I think your sister made a good point..."
Little Shi Tou was stunned, even forgetting to cry: Was he really not mom and dad’s child?! Shock!
Ling Chengyan continued, "You’re also doubting whether mom and dad are real? If not, then you must be silly."
Little Shi Tou was baffled, unsure. He just wanted to know if he was mom and dad’s child.
Ling Chengyan got out of bed, washed a damp towel, returned and wiped little Shi Tou’s face, cleaning away his snot and tears, even his small hands, before saying, "In the stories you’ve heard, what kind of people are stepmoms and stepdads? Do they feed kids delicious things? Do they buy kids new clothes and pretty toys?"
Little Shi Tou widened his eyes, shaking his head.
Ling Chengyan tapped his little nose, smiled and asked, "Still not clear?"
"Am I mom and dad’s child?" Little Shi Tou asked again, watching mom nod affirmatively, and the little guy suddenly felt alive, pouncing into mom’s embrace, tightly gripping mom’s clothes with his little hands, his chubby face rubbing against mom before he kept silly giggling on his own.
