Alice suddenly opened her eyes and found Devon standing in front of her. She touched the scarf.

"How are you here?" She asked and he helped her to her feet.

"I am a teleportation user, after all." He said.

"Ah, makes sense." She said, making sure her footing was right. "And your guild and brother?"

"I did all I could for them and rushed to your side as soon as I could. But it seems I wasn’t fast enough." He said with a remorseful expression. "Please forgive , and... Happy New Year."

Alice was mad for a mont but then it lted when she knew she couldn’t have everything she wanted. Devon was a guy who had a brother to take care of and an entire guild under his wing. So, she could not monopolize him to herself every single ti, right?

"Well, I forgive you." She said. "But before I wish you the sa, tell , did you do this?" She asked, referring to the snow that was falling and he smiled.

"Well, a little birdie carried a certain wish to my ears and so I made that wish co true." He said, taking her gloved hand and interlocking them. "It felt like that was all I could do for you."

Alice blushed and buried her face in the scarf he wrapped around her neck. It was warm.

"Thank you," she said. "And... Happy New Year."

Devon felt relieved, smiled and said,

"Likewise, Alice." He dropped his head to et her forehead and then he planted a soft kiss on her lips.

After all, he knew of the tradition to kiss whoever was next to you once it was New Year. So, he used that to his advantage and he was very glad when Alice did not push him away.

It was the best new year ever spent, he would say. And it was because he got to spend it with the one he cherished in his heart, even if he was a second late.

Mark...

It was an hour to midnight, which marked New Year’s Day, but Alice was alone, sitting by the river on a lover’s bridge.

She didn’t know who to call or what to do. She was just waiting for the ti to go by and the new year to start already.

"Hah, it’s so cold." She said out loud and looked up at the sky. It wasn’t snowing but the weather was unbearably cold.

Leo was busy recharging since he had spent the entire week with her. Maybe they should’ve thought it over before New Year’s Eve, but who knew this would happen at the last minute?

Mark had to leave for an ergency; Devon needed to spend New Year’s Eve with his brother and Micheal... Well, even if she wanted him to be there, he was nowhere to be found.

She waited a bit longer, watching as the crowd gathered around the huge clock. The countdown would start from there and then fireworks.

No one walked alone. They were in the company of their friends, lovers, and family. She sighed.

How she wished she could have soone to accompany her.

New Year’s Eves were never big events especially when she didn’t have any reason to celebrate.

People were always happy for the new year because then it marked their victory into another year, despite all the monster attacks and the sort.

But she... Each year just ant she was closer to 18, and that she got another year to live as a dog. It was never anything to celebrate about.

But at least, that was the ti they threw in fried chicken for dinner. So, that was sothing to be thankful for.

Alice closed her eyes and sighed one more ti.

"What the heck am I doing here?" She asked herself. "It’s not like anyone’s going to co to all of a sudden."

Then, her phone started ringing. She took it out of her jacket to see who was calling.

It was Mark.

"Hello?"

"Alice, where are you right now?" Mark asked.

"Well, I’m at the lover’s bridge, next to the countdown site."

"Are you alone?"

"Obviously."

"Then hold on a minute. I’ll drive there as fast as I can."

"Okay, but be careful on the road. Most of the ground is frozen, you know." She said but he cut the call without another word. "Well, let’s just say he makes it in ti for the count down, then what?"

She started thinking of the western tradition of New Year after the countdown and her face slightly flushed.

"Will we really do it?" She muttered.

She was well aware that Mark had feelings for her but she didn’t know if he had it in him to actually go that far. After all, he was trying to act like a good parent figure.

"Hehe, let’s tease him a bit."

Mark arrived at the area and called Alice again.

"Are you still on the bridge?" He asked and Alice nodded.

"Yeah,"

She turned her head and found him panting from afar. He spotted her and rushed to her.

"Sorry, I took so long." He said. "There was a bit of an ergency and I tried to tackle it as fast as I could and..." He was out of breath.

’Did he run all the way here?’ she wondered. ’I could’ve sworn he was driving. Then...’ she got suspicious. "You didn’t get into an accident, did you?" She asked but Mark darted his eyes, looking away and playing dumb to her question. "You..."

"5!" The countdown started. "4!"

"At least I made it in ti." He said,

"3!"

"Yeah, lucky you." She said, smiling softly. ’Lucky .’

"2!"

"Alice, I..." He hesitated.

"1! Happy New Year!" People scread in excitent and then turned to their significant other.

Fireworks went up and the skies were bathed with colorful lights.

Alice watched the fireworks and then turned to face Mark who was looking straight into her face and suppressing his words, as well as his actions.

That expression on his face was so adorable.

She wrapped her arms around him and slowly pushed her face closer to his.

"What’s the matter?" She asked. "It’s New Year."

Mark closed his eyes and then kissed her. It surprised her but that surprise soon faded. It was warm.

"Happy New Year, Alice." He said. "I hope to spend the next one with you."

"Hm," she smiled happily. " too."
