Leo answered the call and heard Vector’s voice.

"Excuse , but I’d like to speak to Miss Black." He said, and Leo acted the part Alice wanted him to act.

"Miss Black is currently busy. Do you have any ssages to relay to her?" He asked and Vector, through hesitation, expressed how he didn’t want to speak to a middleman. "Will you speak or should I cut the call?"

"I don’t trust you." Vector said, quite plainly. "So, if Miss Black is busy right now, I will call again later."

"Is it that important?" Leo asked, glancing at Alice who was secretly giggling.

"Yes, it is."

Leo took the phone away from his ear for a few seconds and then said,

"Miss Black will speak to you now."

He handed it to Alice who quickly put on her character’s face and answered,

"Congratulations, Vector, you passed the test." She said, and Vector, who had no idea he was being tested, was struck in shock.

"Pa-pardon ? A test?"

"Haha, I’m fond of testing the people who carry out tasks for . And in this case, you did well by not divulging the information you had for to soone who could be a spy on my side." She said. "Congrats. You have great potential."

"Ah, I... I am honored that I could be recognized by you." She could tell he was feeling proud, but he had no idea she was just too lazy to speak first, and that’s why she let Leo answer it as her ’henchn’.

"Okay, down to business. What do you have for ?" She asked, her tone turning serious.

"Ah, yes. Of course, concerning the man you wanted to et. The supplier of the miracle potion," he said and Alice’s interest piqued. "He will be back in town in a week. So, you can et him then. I have arranged a eting which will take place in our forr eting place. So, if you are okay with this arrangent, please let know."

Alice glanced at Leo, wondering what to say at this point. She could agree to it right away but she had to be decisive.

’Sothing unexpected may crop up and I won’t be able to attend the eting. Too many variables involved. The life of a double agent isn’t easy, sigh.’

*Just tell him you’ll free up your schedule. And if you can’t make it that day, you’ll send a replacent. Soone who can stand there on your behalf.* He said in her mind but she didn’t understand who this replacent could be.

’You know you can’t be too far from . So, who’s going to be the replacent?’

*No one. Just tell him that, so he’ll know that you’re very serious about eting the supplier. Once he understands this, he will be willing to shift the date to another if you don’t happen to make it.* He explained and Alice nodded.

It made sense.

"Alright," she said to Vector who had been waiting patiently for her response. "I am eager to et this supplier, so I will free up my schedule. But in case of any unexpected variable that stops from coming in person, I would like to send a representative. Is that okay with you?"

"Unexpected variables?" He asked, confused about what that could be, and she nodded.

"You see, I’m very famous where I’m from, and not just because of my wealth or property, I’m famous for being targeted by covetous parties. So, if sothing like that were to happen on the day of the eting, then I’m sorry to say, but I won’t be able to make it."

Vector went silent and then he sighed.

"Alright, I understand. It’s not a problem if you can’t make it that day. We can always shit the eting since you are very interested in this. The supplier will be around for the whole week, so we can fix another date with the week he is available." He explained and Alice’s lips curled up in a grin.

"Ah, that is fantastic. Then, I look forward to seeing you. And yes, I hope it’s very, very soon." Her tone sounded dark and deep that Vector gulped, feeling pressure, just from listening to her voice.

"Then, see you soon, Miss Black."

He cut the call and Alice imdiately dropped out of character, sighing in relief.

"You know, you seem like a completely different person when you’re ’Miss Black’." He said and she chuckled, resting back on her chair.

"Well, it all cos with the acting. If I can’t do this much, how do you think I fooled my victims in the past and gave them a run for their money?" She felt proud saying that and looked bright too.

But Leo could tell it was never a walk in the park. Especially since she was always in front of dangerous people. The real deal. They could have her head in seconds and she wouldn’t even be able to do anything about it.

All she could do was fall into their hands.

It was a miracle how she scaled through every single ti. He didn’t want to wonder how hard she had to work or how much pain she had to endure to hone skills like that.

Without taking a glimpse at the rest of her mories, he knew that it was all hell to her.

"Ah, let’s hurry up and leave." Alice said but Leo was still sitting on the bed, looking at her and wondering about things he told himself not to wonder about.

If Alice had grown up as a normal child would things have been a whole lot different?

If she had been saved and taken to an orphanage where she later got adopted by a good family... Would she have ended up so... Nonchalant?

He slowly got up and walked up to her.

Alice turned around, only for Leo to grab her by her arm and pull her in for a hug.

"Hey, what are you doing?" She asked but he stayed silent, pressing her head to his chest while he hugged her tightly.

If she had been a normal person from the start then they would’ve never t.

Alice didn’t know what had co over Leo, and as much as she liked hugs, this felt strange, so she read his thoughts.

Her eyes widened as she figured out his thoughts.

"Hah, seriously, are you pitying right now?" She asked but he shook his head.

"No, I’m just feeling so shitty all of a sudden. I feel like a bad person."

"Why is that?"

"I don’t know. I just... I feel bad for feeling relieved that you passed through all that you did. If you didn’t... We would never have t. Not in the last life and not in this either."

Alice clutched his shirt. So, was that what he was thinking about?

She stomped on his feet, got out of his hold, and said,

"Stop thinking about useless things. The past can only be changed to an extent. I know that much." She said. "And I know you know that too. If you had the power to change things way back, I’m sure you would’ve used it to correct the mistake you made instead of wasting it on soone like , who wouldn’t matter thereafter."

She adjusted her dress, sweeping it down with her hands and showing her slightly sad deanor.

"We’re turning the stone already. This much should be enough."
