Chapter 437: Chapter 437: She Did It on Purpose
Lucas Jennings specifically ca over, so he couldn’t just leave right away. Seeing that Chase Jennings was indeed fine, he sank into the couch nearby and started playing his mobile ga on his own.
Just one ga before heading ho.
Mm, he was definitely a great little brother.
So considerate!
Watching Lucas dive into his gaming state, Chase knew that if he didn’t bring it up, Lucas was unlikely to say anything on his own.
Hesitant for a while, he finally spoke up,
“Lucas, hey… bring your phone for a sec.”
Lucas didn’t even look away from his screen as he asked casually,
“What do you need my phone for? Didn’t Mom have soone send you a new one?”
Chase pressed his lips together and replied,
“I need to borrow your phone to video call Scarlett Jennings.”
Hearing this, Lucas imdiately paused his ga. Practically without a second thought, he shoved the phone against his chest defensively, turned his head, and stared at Chase with guarded eyes,
“Why do you want to call her using my phone?”
Chase grew impatient. “Duh! If I had her on WeChat, would I be asking you?”
There’s no way he would ping her in the group chat to thank her publicly.
That would be way too embarrassing.
“Not happening!”
Lucas refused outright without a shred of hesitation.
He still hadn’t forgotten the ti Adam Jennings had used his phone to contact their sister. The aftermath was brutal—his account had been blacklisted for ages before finally being unblocked. No way he’d risk that again.
Hearing this, Chase’s face darkened sowhat,
“Are you giving it to or not?!”
“No way!” Lucas clutched his WeChat account like a lifeline. “She hates you enough as it is—if you say the wrong thing and drag down with you again, you’ll only have yourself to bla!”
It would be totally unfair to him!
Chase took a deep breath, managing to suppress the urge to punch his younger brother. After deliberating for a mont, he finally confessed,
“I’m not planning anything! I just… want to thank her personally.”
Sensing Lucas’s disbelief, he added, “I swear!”
He wasn’t that ungrateful.
Scarlett had saved him twice; wasn’t it only right to thank her?
Besides…
He also wanted to ask for a talisman…
Specifically, if he could get one of those jade talismans, even better.
Lucas never stopped raving about how amazing those jade talismans were.
He hadn’t thought much of it before, but now… he was kind of jealous.
Seeing Chase’s genuine intent to express thanks, Lucas couldn’t outright refuse anymore. Thinking it over, he said,
“Let ask my sister first.”
Chase: …
Whose side are you on, anyway?
Fortunately, Lucas was quick to act. Before long, he initiated the video call and held the phone out, deliberately pointing the cara at Chase by the bedside.
Feeling awkward, Chase protested,
“Just give the phone—I’ll talk to her alone.”
“Nope.” Lucas replied with righteous conviction. “You can video call my sister, but you’re not allowed to touch my phone.”
What if he ended up blacklisted again?
Reluctantly, Chase dropped the subject. As the video call was answered, Scarlett Jennings promptly appeared onscreen. She wasn’t wearing her Taoism Academy uniform but her personal clothes. From the looks of it, she was still in the car.
Chase’s thoughts jumped—was she on her way ho?
Did she co back specifically to check on him?
In the video, Scarlett maintained her typical poker face, her expression as cool and distant as ever. “No. What’s up?”
Her flat-out rejection dashed Chase’s hopes in an instant.
Lucas was always saying Scarlett was cold on the outside but warm on the inside, but in Chase’s experience, Scarlett had always been icy inside and out.
At least when it ca to him, she’d never been warm!
“I… I’m really grateful for the talisman you gave this ti—it helped a lot. I just wanted to say… thank you!”
Once the words finally ca out, Chase found they weren’t as awkward as he’d imagined. Straightening up unconsciously, he added earnestly,
“Scarlett, you saved twice.”
In the video, Scarlett listened as he solemnly finished, then asked, “That’s it?”
Chase wasn’t thrilled by her response but confird, “That’s it.”
“Got it.”
Scarlett responded calmly with three words, then reached out and—a click—the video call ended.
Staring at the disconnected screen, Chase was utterly dumbfounded.
No way…
He hadn’t even finished speaking—why had she hung up?
And what kind of response was “Got it”?
“Is she… is she deliberately ssing with ?”
Chase pointed at the phone, questioning Lucas. After all, last ti, when she’d advised him to keep the amulet close at all tis, he’d snapped back impatiently with a dismissive “Got it.”
“She’s definitely doing this on purpose! How can she be so petty? No way—I need your phone—I’m calling her back!”
As he spoke, Chase lunged for the phone, but Lucas swiftly backed away several steps with it in hand.
“Brother Chase! Why are you being so unreasonable? My sister isn’t like that! The reason she dislikes you is because you’re always assuming the worst of her!”
He’d checked the call history before. Last ti, Adam had used his phone to video call their sister multiple tis. She’d hung up once, and he imdiately called back—that’s what got him blacklisted.
Brother Chase’s demands now? Totally a repeat of Brother Adam’s playbook.
“Listen to : as a man, you can’t be overly clingy!” Lucas offered so heartfelt advice.
Chase shot him a look and snapped, “Get lost!”
Lucas, as though granted clency, bolted with the phone in hand. “Got it!”
Chase: ???
He’d said it offhand—why had Lucas taken it seriously?
He still had more important things to say to Scarlett!!
…
Over on her end, Scarlett swiftly tucked her phone away after ending the call with Chase.
She really had no interest in dealing with him.
As for Chase suspecting she’d deliberately echoed his dismissive “Got it”…
Well, she absolutely had done it on purpose.
What’s wrong with that?
At least her tone wasn’t as impatient as his had been last ti.
From Scarlett’s perspective, her response was perfectly appropriate.
She’d seen the viral video online where Chase had been shoved down the stairs and nearly injured.
It was clear that the two people in the video were his troubleso romantic entanglents paired with hidden enemies.
Originally, she’d assud that getting hurt once would be enough to resolve his misfortune.
But as she watched the video call earlier, she noticed an ominous mark of bad karma still lingering on Chase’s forehead, growing darker.
Scarlett mulled it over briefly, then pulled out an amulet.
Considering he’d gone out of his way to thank her this ti, she decided to sell him another talisman.
This ti, it would cost 80,000.
…
As she finished thinking, the car slowed to a stop.
Stepping out, Scarlett saw Director Clark and Ariel Zimrman alongside the other guests already gathered.
Today marked the final airing of the reality show “Inspiration.”
A week ago, the production team had begun hyping the finale online.
Though viewers were reluctant for it to end, they were already waiting eagerly in the livestream room.
For the final episode, since Nathan White couldn’t continue participating, Director Clark seed to have given up entirely. He’d let the official social dia run a public vote, openly stating that he wouldn’t personally choose the sixth guest.
Let the audience decide.
Even if this decision tanked everything, it wouldn’t be his responsibility.
Scarlett had been too busy over the past few days to pay attention to the online voting.
So when she stepped out of the car and caught sight of this episode’s crowd-selected sixth guest, a hint of surprise flickered across her face.
… It’s him???
