In just a few sentences, Nan Yu watched Ren Xingzhou, covered in wounds, and could imagine how perilously he had escaped from the deep mountains.
He was so close to dying there forever, becoming a cold, lifeless corpse.
Nan Yu’s expression was solemn as she said, "Brother Ren, you should stay here and recover from your injuries during this ti. Nan Luzhi won’t get away with what he did to you, I’ll make it right."
Ren Xingzhou looked at Nan Yu, a struggle flickering in the depths of his eyes.
Nan Luzhi was Nan Yu’s biological parent; he did not dare to hope that she could actually make things right.
But, looking into her exceptionally earnest eyes, he couldn’t help but foster so hope, wondering what if.
He nodded lightly, "Okay."
Nan Yu redressed his gaping wounds and asked, "Brother Ren, I have a question. Whose body did Nan Luzhi find under the cliff?"
After much thought, she believed that the extra corpse under the cliff could only have been arranged by Ren Xingzhou.
But she couldn’t figure out where the body had co from.
Upon hearing this, Ren Xingzhou, with a hint of amusent in his deep eyes, said, "Do you still rember that severed hand?"
Of course, Nan Yu rembered, "That severed hand belonged to serial killer Zhang Tao’s cousin."
Ren Xingzhou said intently, "I found the body in the deep forest. I had intended to call the police, but then Eldest Young Master ca back and accused you of being the murderer, determined to find your body and mutilate it."
"Eldest Young Master is always impetuous and hard to provoke. I feared that if he knew you were alive, he would co after you imdiately, with no questions asked."
"So, I took the body that the lion had killed, slipped on the jacket you had left behind, and threw it off the cliff when no one was around, pretending it was you."
A look of gratitude appeared on Nan Yu’s face, "Brother Ren, thank you for helping ."
Otherwise, she would not have been able to so easily use a false identity to treat her biological mother.
Ren Xingzhou sighed, "You actually don’t need to thank ; it was very easy to tell that the body wasn’t yours."
"But Nan Luzhi was so eager to cremate the body and bury it in Evil Tomb; he didn’t let anyone take a closer look, which allowed to exploit this loophole."
"Ultimately, it was Nan Luzhi who shot himself in the foot."
Towards the end, Ren Xingzhou’s tone carried a clear hint of scorn.
When Nan Yu thought about her foster father reveling in her supposed death, reluctant to even glance twice at the body to confirm if it was hers, a tinge of sorrow arose in her eyes.
Even though she had long known that her foster parents’ affection had vanished when Nan Qingqing returned when she was thirteen.
Yet, now, knowing that her presud ’body’ was buried in Evil Tomb still saddened her.
She questioned herself; she had never done anything wrong—why did they hate her so!
Seeing Nan Yu silent, enveloped in a sense of grievance, Ren Xingzhou suddenly realized he had misspoken. His heart quivered, and he looked at her with compassion.
But he was never good at consoling people. After a long thought, not knowing what to say, he finally pulled out a photograph from his pocket.
He handed it to Nan Yu.
"This is your photo, right? I was going to give it to Eldest Young Master, but I think it’s more appropriate to give it back to you."
In her mont of dejection, Nan Yu saw a photo of Duan Zhu in her younger years—the sa one Nan Zhuoyuan had given her before.
Her fingertips trembled as she took the photo, touching Duan Zhu on it.
The sorrow in her eyes dispersed, replaced by a determined expression.
She now had a biological mother who was willing to protect her with her life!
