you wretch, dare to call a dog-eye!?” Pei Wenlee glared at Pei Qin, accusing her of gouging out her eyes to replace them with a dog’s, clearly insinuating that she looked down on people like a dog.
Lady Chen caught sight of her reaching for her daughter, and quickly grabbed Pei Wenlee to pull her aside, “You dead girl, you still want to hit soone!?”
“Do you even know what the cri of slander is?” Pei Qin looked at Pei Wenlee coldly, Lady Chen and Pei Wenbo had been chasticed and had beco much more docile, but there was still this one, who also needed to learn.
“You were the one who went to the market, and you spoke with your large aunt, I saw it with my own eyes!” Pei Wenlee yelled angrily.
Pei Qin let out a cold laugh, “It was you who ran to the market, yet you insist on slandering as if I did the sa.
At such a young age, you’re already so malicious.
Even if your brother hasn’t obtained any scholarly honor, even if your father were a Master Graduate, if the things you’ve done and the words you’ve said get out, no one would want to marry you!”
Pei Wenlee jumped up instantly, “You’re the one who’ll never get married!
Qian Dog doesn’t want you, no one else would want you either!
Not even a widower would take you to be his stepmother!”
“Qian Dog!?” Pei Qin raised an eyebrow, looking darkly toward Lady Chen and Lady Zhu.
Lady Chen’s face showed her extre embarrassnt as she yanked Pei Wenlee, “Go back to your room!”
It was actually Pei Wenlee that Qian Dog didn’t want; otherwise, with the ss reaching that extent, Lady Chen and Lady Zhu wouldn’t have gone to Pei Zongli’s graveside to propose five taels of silver as additional dowry on top of the land outside the two acres.
Pei Wenlee also knew that ntioning Qian Dog was in bad taste, so she glared at Pei Qin hatefully and, with gritted teeth, went back to her room.
“If you follow again, this baseless slander you’ve fabricated…” Pei Qin watched Lady Chen and Lady Zhu, her fists creaking ominously.
The two of them looked at her grimly as she took a shovel and went to the back courtyard.
Madam Fang tried to speak several tis but ultimately said nothing about Pei Qin, drying her half-wet hands and returning to the kitchen to continue kneading dough.
In her room, Pei Wenlee kept cursing that Pei Qin would never get married, “Even if you offered yourself up, no one would take you!
You could only marry an old widower or a beggar!
How dare you curse my big brother for failing his exams, just wait until my big brother gains his title, and I beco a young lady, we’ll see then who cos knocking at our door!”
Pei Qin didn’t care who ca knocking; all she wanted was to raise money quickly.
After the fiasco with Qian Dog’s family and the scene she caused by taking Madam Fang and the others up to the mountain, the atmosphere in Old Pei’s House had grown even more tense and combative.
The possibility of living in peace was gone, and trouble was just a matter of ti.
After pulling up a cabbage, Pei Qin removed the outer leaves soiled with dirt and took it to the kitchen.
Madam Fang had already prepared the pot; today’s al was cabbage and tofu soup with flatbread on the side.
Pei Qin didn’t dig up much cabbage; she just took a bit of salty broth to eat with two flatbreads, “Damn it!
If I keep eating like this, I’ll start to taste birds in my mouth!”
“Qinqin…” Madam Fang noticed that these days, she frequently heard her daughter cursing.
Dropping her bowl, Pei Qin took Wendong and San Ya up the mountain.
Si Ya also wanted to go, as she was always left behind while her third sister was allowed to accompany them.
“Stay at ho with your mother!” Pei Qin said, already heading out the door with her dull kitchen knife.
Si Ya stomped her foot in annoyance but didn’t follow.
Once they reached the mountain, Pei Qin continued deeper into the woods.
Bamboo shoots could still be dug up, but she wanted to find sothing else too, which might make money a bit quicker.
However, after wandering around for a long ti, apart from two squirrels, they didn’t even find a wild chicken egg.
San Ya’s pockets were filled with pine nuts, walnuts, and sunflower seeds, while Wendong munched as he walked alongside her.
Looking at the sky, Pei Qin said, “Let’s go to the bamboo grove to dig up bamboo shoots!”
“Okay!” both San Ya and Wendong agreed to follow her lead.
The trio shifted toward the bamboo grove, ready to search with sticks in hand when Pei Qin heard a rustling sound.
She saw a chubby little body burrowing underground.
Her eyes lit up, and she signaled San Ya and Wendong to help corner it, then she raised the kitchen knife and closed in.
