Chapter 689: Chapter 211: Taking Action_5

The shadowy figure had been about to pass by, but upon hearing the voice, paused for a mont, turned back, and pushed the door to co inside. Seeing Ah Zhao like this, Situ Jiuyue frowned and asked, “Why are you awake?”

“It’s very noisy outside, that’s why I woke up.” He looked at Situ Jiuyue, dressed and fully prepared, and wondered, “Doctor Situ, you’re going out so late, is sothing happening outside?”

“Prince Cheng has rebelled, and tonight’s the night they make their move, it’s very chaotic outside.” Situ Jiuyue glanced at him and said, “Continue to sleep, don’t co out.” After saying that, she was about to close the door and leave.

“Wait.” Ah Zhao called out to her.

Situ Jiuyue asked impatiently, “What else is it?”

“With Prince Cheng rebelling, the people in this residence… won’t there be any problems?” Ah Zhao asked.

Situ Jiuyue laughed and said, “If you’re worried about your own danger, there’s no need. This is the Duke Residence. In Yanjing City, there’s no safer place than here, even the palace is more dangerous than this place. Living here, no one would dare to break in and take your life, not to ntion that Prince Cheng hasn’t even attacked the city yet. Even if Prince Cheng stord into the city, as long as you’re in this residence, no one would dare to touch your life.”

Ah Zhao was startled for a mont before replying, “That’s not what I an. Even if it’s as fortified as a wall of copper and iron, it’s still made by people. Sotis disasters happen not because people’s abilities are lacking, but for fear of soone exploiting a loophole, caught off guard.” He smiled, “I ended up like this because of that.”

This ti, it was Situ Jiuyue’s turn to be stunned.

“Doctor Situ may be a doctor, but also a woman, and if you encounter danger, it might be difficult to save yourself…”

“You’re not suggesting I stay here, are you?” Situ Jiuyue raised her eyebrows, “You can’t even walk now, so how would you protect ?”

“I’m not suggesting that,” he said. “I just wanted Doctor Situ to find soone skilled in martial arts. Don’t be alone. However, if there’s no one in the residence and Doctor Situ is in danger, and I happen to be beside you, even though I can’t get out of bed and move, and even though I’ve lost my martial arts, I can still shield Doctor Situ from knives and swords.”

If an ordinary man had said this, a woman might have felt that he was being slick, clearly just trying to sweet-talk her. However, when Ah Zhao said it, it was very sincere, and one believed that he really thought this way and would do it if he said so.

“I don’t understand,” Situ Jiuyue said calmly, “We’re neither kin nor kinfolk. According to what you’ve said, you would be willing to sacrifice your life for . Why is that? Just because I saved your life, you would repay in this way?”

“Even if Doctor Situ hadn’t saved my life, I’d still help in tis of danger. Because Doctor Situ is a woman, and I am a man. It’s a man’s duty to protect defenseless elders, children, and young won, isn’t it?”

His eyes were bright, and amidst the noisy background, they were particularly steadfast. It was strange; he was a man whose martial arts were gone, who now couldn’t walk—a person like this couldn’t truly protect anyone. But Situ Jiuyue felt extraordinarily reassured by his side.

She said, “Then you’re mistaken. I am not so defenseless weak woman. When I was six years old, my own uncle killed my father to take everything he owned. Do you know what I did?”

Ah Zhao shook his head.

“I drugged their cook, threatening him to tamper with their food, adding my specially prepared poison. I poisoned their entire family; my aunt, her sons, and daughters all ate it. Without an antidote, they would die within three days with their bodies rotting. I thought he would trade his life for his wife and children’s lives, thus avenging my father. But he truly was ruthless enough to watch his own family die in agony.”

Ah Zhao looked at Situ Jiuyue, his lips moved as if he wanted to say sothing, but in the end, he said nothing.

“After that, he tried everything he could to catch and kill . Because my existence was a threat to him. On the way I escaped from my hotown, I don’t know how many people I killed. I’ve been killing people since I was six years old. Indeed, I have no martial arts skills, but the people chasing were all experts, and yet they all died by my hands because every part of and everything I have could be poisoned.”

She talked about these matters lightly, as if they couldn’t be more common, “I know you want to be a knight-errant; maybe you have always been that way. Punishing the evil, promoting the good, supporting justice, rescuing the weak, drawing your blade to assist when encountering injustice, fulfilling your heroic heart, and also saving lives—a matter that makes everyone happy.”

“I do not fancy that,” Situ Jiuyue said, “I’ve always believed in the survival of the fittest since I was young. I don’t need anyone to save . Whoever wants to harm , I will kill them. You and I are not the sa kind of people. Don’t think about protecting or saving . To , that is ridiculous, and I don’t need it.”

She said, “You should rest well.” After saying that, she turned and walked out.
