Evelyn’s POV
The suspicion in my eyes clearly irritated Calvin, but I wasn’t about to back down. His dical results were concerning, to say the least.
"What’s the problem with my report?" His voice was cold as winter ice, each word dripping with frost.
I didn’t answer imdiately. Instead, I walked over and took his wrist between my fingers to check his pulse. My fingertips rested against his skin, feeling the unsteady rhythm beneath.
I’d suspected sothing was off with Calvin’s health for a while now. But with all the custody battles and my focus on the children, I hadn’t given it much thought. After all, Wolfe Haven International owned several private hospitals, and the Bloodbane Pack had their own dical staff. It wasn’t my concern.
Until now.
"Besides your insomnia, have you been experiencing heart palpitations, excessive sweating, trembling hands?" I asked gravely, still monitoring his pulse. "In severe cases, blurred vision, and..."
I paused, choosing my next words carefully. "Heightened physical responses at night? Uncontrollable urges around won, almost like a wolf in heat?"
He confird most symptoms but firmly denied the last one. I checked his pulse again. It was weak but irregular, but his vital signs showed unexpected stability.
"Calvin, your blood work shows indicators consistent with LDS," I said, my voice deadly serious.
We both went quiet. This virus had originated from failed Alpha experints decades ago, spreading silently through urban Pack territories. The top ten laboratories and hospitals worldwide had received samples of LDS.
Including mine.
I had developed a stabilizer that could halt the virus’s progression, but we couldn’t make enough due to shortages of Moon Root, a rare plant that only grew in certain places. Those infected eventually lost their connection to their wolf spirit, suffering organ failure and neural degeneration.
"Until we confirm your condition, you should stay away from the children," I warned.
Despite my serious tone, Calvin’s face remained calm. He just raised his eyelids lazily, the corner of his mouth lifting in a casual smirk.
"Fine. Whatever you say," he replied casually.
I looked at the data again before calling my assistant on the intercom, telling her to take Calvin to Laboratory One for more tests.
My assistant turned pale. Laboratory One housed equipnt I had built myself for treating wolf-human connection disorders—the only one of its kind in the world. Calvin would be the first to use it.
I ran the machine for Calvin’s full-body scan myself. The results would take half a day. I got him a private room while we waited.
When my colleagues heard I’d used Laboratory One, they gathered around , asking questions. I explained Calvin’s situation, and they looked worried.
"Don’t worry," Gary assured . "We’re analyzing the sample now. If it’s confird, we still have so LDS stabilizer in reserve."
"Besides, the data only suggests it might be LDS. It’s not definitive yet," another researcher added.
It wasn’t that I was particularly concerned about Calvin, but I couldn’t shake this foreboding feeling. Our stabilizer worked, but our Moon Root supply was nearly exhausted.
"We’ll wait for the complete data," I said firmly. "In the anti, let’s focus on researching the samples. The sooner we develop a treatnt, the fewer people will suffer."
This world is strange that way. Suffering always seems to find those who’ve already endured enough.
Calvin’s POV
I was in the middle of a video conference when Evelyn entered my hospital room. Her presence was both comforting and unsettling, I hadn’t expected to find myself under her dical care again.
"Alpha Calvin, Miss Whitmore has asked repeatedly when you’ll be visiting her," my Beta Zeon reported through mind-link.
"Tell her the deal is finished," I replied coldly, fatigue evident in my voice. "This is the last ti I’m helping her."
Clara had taken a knife to her abdon while saving Rhys, causing irreversible damage to her uterus. She’d never be able to conceive or beco a mother. In return for her sacrifice, I had promised her three favors.
During that ti, Evelyn had been struggling emotionally, so I’d made the executive decision not to tell her about the attack on our children.
Three years ago, I had left work early to find Evelyn absent from pack house. I took our sons to a pack gathering, where we happened to run into Clara. My mother had invited her, claiming it was for inter-pack cooperation and suggesting Clara would make a suitable Luna candidate. At the ti, I had no intention of replacing Evelyn as Luna.
Clara simply asked for her first favor: helping the financially troubled Calypso Pack survive bankruptcy. I agreed, seeing no harm in it. For the past two years, most of Calypso Pack’s business had co from deals I’d arranged through Wolfe Haven International.
Rumors spread that I was helping them because I had feelings for Clara. I ordered Zeon to squash these stories imdiately, but sohow they only grew more persistent.
Later, Clara used her inability to have children as leverage, asking if she could love Rowan and Rhys as her own. I refused, telling her they already had a mother. But seeing how much Rhys enjoyed her company, I didn’t prevent her from spending ti with them. After all, the boys lacked maternal affection, and I believed Clara’s intentions were good.
My second promise was securing her release from jail and providing her with entertainnt industry connections. The final favor involved funding reconstructive surgery for her scarred face.
With all three conditions fulfilled, I considered my debt to Clara paid in full. These were obligations I felt I needed to honor, and since Evelyn and I had never truly opened up to each other during our marriage, I hadn’t bothered telling her about any of this.
Now, watching her examine with professional detachnt, I found myself lost in thought. When a strand of hair fell across her forehead, I instinctively reached out to tuck it behind her ear.
Evelyn’s expression hardened instantly. She stepped back, eyes cold.
"If Alpha Calvin can’t keep his hands to himself, perhaps he shouldn’t have them at all," she snapped.
I said nothing, knowing I’d crossed a line.
By midday, my test results were expedited. After reviewing the comprehensive data, Evelyn visibly relaxed.
Thankfully, it wasn’t LDS.
With limited staff available, Zeon was allowed into the lab to take care of . He looked relieved to see finally getting so sleep, however uneasy it might be.
Evelyn had kept my hospitalization secret from Rowan and Rhys, not wanting to worry them. She’d specifically warned to be discreet.
So naturally, when I discovered the twins were visiting Leon Robinson for help with math gas, and that Evelyn always stayed to chat with him afterward, I deliberately positioned myself with Zeon at the hospital room entrance where we’d be seen.
When the boys spotted , their faces lit up with both joy and concern.
"Dad, why are you wearing the sa clothes as Uncle Robinson?" Rowan asked innocently.
"Dad, are you sick too?" Rhys’s voice was filled with worry.
anwhile, Evelyn stood there holding Alexis, giving a death glare that could have frozen hell itself.
