Evelyn’s POV
"Leon?"I asked, confused by Calvin’s sudden ntion of him.How had Leon Robinson gotten dragged into this conversation?
I shot Calvin an angry look, my voice turning cold. "I haven’t seen him since we married."
The look in Calvin’s eyes grew darker, sothing dangerous flashing across them. I could see him thinking, comparing my words against whatever "facts" he thought he knew. Our stories clearly didn’t match.
Soone was lying.
"Is that why you ca without warning? To question about sothing from years ago?" I finally understood his real reason for being here. After the shock of seeing him and hearing about his affair had thrown off, my mind was clear now.
I watched him carefully, my body tensing defensively. As an Oga without a wolf, I was always aware of my vulnerability around Alphas.
Calvin noticed my reaction, his face growing darker.
"I just want to know the real reason you left our mateship, Evelyn," he said, his voice quiet but firm. "We had a good life together. We had twin sons..."
I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly. I was the one thing in Calvin Wolfe’s perfect life he couldn’t control completely.
Looking straight into his eyes, I spoke honestly. "I could accept having a mate who didn’t love , Calvin. Being an Oga without a wolf already made different. But what I couldn’t accept was having a mate who was married to while seeing another woman."
The room grew ice cold. We stared at each other in tense silence.
"You can’t have it both ways, Calvin. You can’t say you don’t understand love, don’t need love, and then give that love to another woman. That’s not fair to ."
Pain spread through my chest as I rembered. "Do you know what everyone said about ? That I had the title of Luna of the Bloodbane Pack but not my Alpha’s heart. That if my womb hadn’t been ’productive,’ you would have forgotten entirely."
I gave him a cold smile that didn’t reach my eyes. "Since when did a woman’s value depend on her fertility?"
Calvin’s face turned dark and scary. His deep eyes grew cold and far away, but deep inside them, I saw sothing new. Understanding. Pain. Maybe even regret.
"I’m sorry, Evelyn. I didn’t know..." he said at last.
My face grew harder. "Would it have mattered if you did? If we could go back, would you have ignored Clara’s calls? Would you have refused to et her?"
I shook my head firmly. "No, Calvin. You wouldn’t have."
The tension in my study was heavy. The air felt thin, like soone was taking it away bit by bit. Calvin looked like he was burning inside, each breath seeming to hurt him.
"Evelyn, I didn’t know. She was just my friend," he said roughly.
"Friends don’t send sexy photos to married n at night," I shot back. "Friends don’t secretly take pictures of a married man and send them to his mate to mock her. That’s not friendship, Calvin. That’s soone trying to break up a marriage."
Calvin looked like he was fighting to speak, as if sothing was stopping his words.
I moved closer to him, my face near his, and said each word carefully, my smile growing with bitter joy.
"Of course you didn’t know. Every ti you went to et her, I got photos."
"Photos of you making her tea in the kitchen, your back turned. Photos of your hand with your watch showing. Photos of you on her bed with your shirt half-open..."
"Impossible!" Calvin cut in harshly. "I never touched her!"
I moved even closer, my lips near his ear, my breath warm on his skin. "You don’t think emotional betrayal counts as infidelity?"
My fingers touched his shoulder lightly, moving slowly across his collarbone through his black shirt, stopping at his throat. I felt him swallow hard.
Though my touch was close, my eyes stayed cold. We stared at each other, his look sharp and icy, neither of us backing down.
Our faces were so close I could feel his breath. One small move would have made our lips et.
I slowly gave him a cold smile. "See? Even knowing I’m married again, you haven’t pushed away."
I pulled my finger away from his throat and stood tall.
"You’re no different from other n, Calvin."
I saw panic flash across his face as he stood up, looking like he wanted to explain. I stepped back right away, keeping space between us.
"It was never about not being good enough, Calvin. It’s about what’s wrong with n like you. Problems that have been there since the start."
"I, Evelyn Blackwell, could make anyone happy."
Right then, the chains around my heart broke. The fog in my mind cleared away like wind had blown it off.
The smile on my face grew calr, like I’d finally accepted everything. I turned to the door.
"Evelyn," Calvin called out suddenly.
I kept walking, but as I opened the door, I told him, "You can stay and talk with the boys a bit longer. A car will co to take you ho later."
At least I had built Evelink Biosciences myself. Every bit of money spent had gone through . I had full control over what I’d created.
Leaving the study, I went straight to my office. New patients were coming soon, hard cases made harder because of who these people were.
Also, the Red Cedar Resort suddenly stopping its sale raised questions. I needed Jackson and the team to look into what happened.
When I left my office, it was dark. I went ho to have dinner with my three children, looking around the living room to check if Calvin had gone. Seeing no sign of him, I thought he’d left as told.
After putting the children to bed, I wasn’t tired, so I went to get a book from the study.
I didn’t turn on the light since the bookshelf was near the door and the hall light was enough. Finding my book quickly, I was about to leave when I heard sothing.
Was that soone breathing?
My mind raced. I had three precious children in this house!
I held the book tight in one hand while my other hand moved slowly to the light switch.
Click!
The study lights ca on.
I held my breath and threw the book hard at the figure on the couch, but a hand caught it in the air.
Calvin’s sharp senses had woken him right away. His fingers grabbed the book as his eyes opened, looking sharp and ready like a hawk at night.
When he saw it was , his eyes softened. He put the book down, his tense body relaxing as he sank back into the sofa, raising one hand to block the bright light.
My eyes went wide with shock. "You’re still here?"
He hadn’t left the study at all!
"Too tired. Fell asleep," he explained simply, regarding my coat that he’d apparently been using as a makeshift blanket.
After I left, Calvin got bad headaches. Knowing he needed good sleep to avoid getting sick, he saw my jacket in the study. He covered himself with it that helped him sleep.
He looked at his watch. It was eleven at night. He had slept for twelve whole hours.
No wonder he felt better, though I clearly didn’t feel the sa. The angry look in my eyes showed I just wanted to throw him out.
Just as I was about to speak, the doorbell rang.
Everyone at Evelink Biosciences knew well—coworkers, teachers, students. If any of them saw my ex-mate in my ho this late, people would talk.
"Don’t you dare co out," I warned him firmly.
But the person at my door wasn’t from the lab. It was Leon Robinson, who had just gotten better from being very sick.
The forr campus heartthrob from university, adored by countless admirers, now sat alone in a wheelchair, looking up at with smiling eyes.
Until the next mont.
When he saw the ssy-looking man behind , his face changed completely.
