Calvin’s POV
I stared at the two boys standing in my office, and the little girl whose hand they were holding. My eyebrows pulled together in a frown.
"Where’s your mother?" I asked, my voice sharper than I intended.
Rowan, always the honest one, answered right away. "Mom dropped us off downstairs and left."
"Dad, I’m taking my sister to play," Rhys announced, his voice bubbling with excitent and impatience.
The twins knew my office pretty well by now, having spent lots of ti here over the past three years. They led their little sister to the break room without needing help, moving easily to find the toys they kept here.
I stood in the doorway, watching as Alexis’s eyes lit up when she saw the pink diamond fox figurine on the side table. Her whole face brightened with happiness.
That damn fox. I’d tried to give it to her before, but Evelyn had said no. I’d told Beta Zeon to get rid of it, but apparently, he’d decided to put it in the break room instead. Between business trips overseas and splitting my ti between visiting the kids at Evelyn’s place and sleeping at my pack house, I hadn’t noticed it had showed up again.
My expression softened as Alexis hugged the fox figurine and ran toward on her little legs, her bright eyes blinking up at .
"Thank you," she said sweetly.
I scooped her up easily, settling her on my lap as I sat in my office chair. "How does Alex know this is for you?" I teased. "Maybe it’s for another little girl."
Several questions seed to race across her face. She looked down at the pink diamond fox figurine in her arms, and despite how much she obviously loved it, she placed it carefully on my desk.
"Then... for other girl," she said quietly, getting ready to slide off my lap to join her brothers.
Before she could get far, she turned back and tugged on my pant leg, looking serious. "Thank you, take back."
I couldn’t help but laugh at her strange logic. She’d already thanked , but now that she thought the gift wasn’t hers, she wanted to return the thanks as well.
I pulled her back onto my lap and gently brushed my knuckle against her perfect little nose. My usually serious expression lted into sothing much softer.
"It is for Alex," I said, my voice quiet as I placed the fox figurine back into her arms.
I called Zeon to bring so milk for her. Zeon ca in a few minutes later with the drink, not surprised at all by seeing holding Alexis while looking over papers. He’d gotten used to it by now.
The truth was, Alexis was really well-behaved for a kid her age.
She looked at the bottle of milk with bright, excited eyes. "Thank you, Uncle."
After Zeon left, I looked down at the small child in my arms. "Does Alex know where Mommy went?"
"Mommy looking for dicine," she answered sweetly, tilting her head to look up at .
I frowned, tapping my fingers against the desk. "Did Mommy tell Alex what dicine she’s looking for?"
Alexis shook her head, her curls bouncing. "Just said important."
Cyra stirred within , suddenly alert. "She’s gone looking for the Stellaris Moonbane Root. In Thunder Creek."
I imdiately sent a mind-link to Zeon. "Zeon, my office. Now."
My Beta appeared within seconds, his expression questioning.
"Find out everything you can about Thunder Creek. Evelyn’s gone there, likely searching for the Stellaris Moonbane Root."
Zeon’s eyebrows rose. "The Stellaris—? That’s extrely rare. Last I heard, the Frostfang Pack was also searching for it."
My jaw clenched. Of course Alpha Christian Drake would be involved. I’d heard he found Selene, the daughter of the forr Frostfang Pack Alpha Ethan, but she apparently had so rare disease and hadn’t shown up to any pack gatherings yet.
If Evelyn really found this dicine, the Frostfang Pack would definitely co looking for it.
But why was Evelyn searching for this dicine? Was it really just for Leon’s leg injury?
"Find out more about Leon’s leg injury, how it’s healing and what treatnt Evelyn is giving him." I couldn’t keep the anger from my voice.
"Alpha Leon?" Zeon asked carefully.
"Yes. Him." I almost growled the words. Leon got hurt saving the twins, so Evelyn would definitely do everything she could to heal him. Even though Evelyn had promised there was nothing between them, the thought of her putting herself in danger for him made my blood boil.
"Also," I continued, "Thunder Creek is unclaid territory. No pack protection. Look into whether there are any problems there."
Zeon nodded, already typing on his phone. "I’ll handle it, Alpha."
After he left, I looked down at Alexis, who was happily drinking her milk while holding her fox figurine.
***
Two days later, at Evelyn’s house.
I woke up and first checked on Rowan and Rhys, who were already awake in their room, then went to see Alex sleeping peacefully in the master bedroom. I’d been staying here to take care of Alex.
Evelyn had been gone for two days now. Beta Zeon’s investigation confird that she was indeed looking for that herb because of Leon’s injury.
As for Thunder Creek, the town was really remote with very few people. No pack claid it because there had been a major rogue attack there years ago. The original pack had to evacuate, and when other pack Alphas went to fight the rogues later, they found the rogues had already left. After that, no pack wanted to go near that area anymore.
While I was lost in thought, Alex suddenly woke up and started crying. When she saw , she ran over and hugged , calling out "Daddy, Mommy’s in danger!"
I was shocked that Alex called Daddy again. She’d done it before, but Evelyn said kids don’t understand, and after that she always called Uncle.
But I couldn’t worry about that right now. I quickly picked up Alex and held her, asking what was wrong.
"In my dream, Mommy was in danger. Lots of bad people were hurting Mommy," Alex said through her tears.
"Are you missing Mommy?" I asked gently.
"Yes, I miss Mommy, but Mommy’s in trouble. Please go help her," Alex begged.
I was confused, but then Cyra spoke up in my mind. "Trust Alex’s instincts. Go find Evelyn. Alex and Evelyn have such a strong mother-daughter bond, there’s definitely a deep connection between them."
"Uncle will bring Mommy back to you," I whispered.
So I imdiately sent a mind-link to Beta Zeon, telling him to prepare for the trip to that place as fast as possible. Of course, I still arranged for soone to take the twins to school.
At the airport, Marcel, my chief gamma warrior who had a more dangerous vibe than Zeon’s calm efficiency, stood waiting.
"Everything’s arranged, Alpha Calvin," he reported.
"Let’s go," I commanded.
