«It’s gotten late, so I think it’s safer if you take the bus ho. You know, it’s almost nine, and at this hour there are people around who are much worse than during the day. As for , don’t worry. I’ll wait with you at the stop until the bus arrives, then my mother will co pick up. She’s a bit nosy and she’d start bombarding with embarrassing questions about you, thinking you’re my girlfriend, inviting you to dinner and all that. Sothing I’d really rather avoid.»

That’s the excuse I used to elegantly get rid of Kimberly after spending an entire afternoon together.

After running away from that bar, we took refuge on a bench in the middle of a playground, chatting while families played around us with their children. In the end, we had sushi for dinner.

I would’ve gladly stayed with her until tomorrow morning — and not necessarily to go at it like rabbits — but an irresistible impulse has been gnawing at ever since we left that shady place, followed at a distance by the two guys who had harassed Kimberly.

My unconventional vigilante side is burning far more fiercely than my desire to have sex with her.

They’re probably waiting for to move sowhere less crowded before making their move, and that’s exactly what I intend to give them.

A little while ago, Kimberly finally got on the bus. Now it’s my turn to have so fun.

I spot them easily — leaning casually against a wall about fifty ters away, smoking and chatting as if nothing had happened, but throwing a glance every now and then to keep tabs on .

They think the darkness of the night is on their side.

Pff. Idiots.

At this hour, Long Island City is fairly deserted, but unfortunately not enough for to have fun without being disturbed. Ideally, I need an even more isolated alley with no one around, and that’s exactly what I’m trying to find, slipping in and out of every narrow side street I co across.

From ti to ti, I stop and fake a cough to draw their attention, making sure they keep following without losing sight of , then I start walking again, moving farther and farther away from the more central area.

And they keep following , slowly closing the distance between us.

Perfect. Everything is going exactly as I hoped.

I don’t even want to imagine what could’ve happened to Kimberly if I hadn’t been with her a few hours ago — she certainly wouldn’t have gone ho without a bad mory... or worse.

And who knows how many other girls they harassed before her. Yet the cops who intervened let them go after a few seconds, probably brushing them off with so useless warning.

It’s clear that if the people who are supposed to protect our safety can’t do their job, then it’s up to to make sure these two are no longer a threat to anyone.

In less than ten minutes, they’ve gotten so close that I can hear them snickering behind . Fortunately, right at this mont, I spot the perfect place for their execution.

I suddenly turn into a particularly dark, sinister dead-end alley, barely lit by the faint glow of the moon.

Right on cue, they follow , quickening their pace.

Checkmate.

«Well, well... look who we et again — the cocky kid from this afternoon. What an incredible coincidence. The world really is small, huh?» Frank’s sinister voice echoes behind , still clearly slurred by his broken jaw — the stocky man I’d dropped earlier with an uppercut to the chin.

«Yeah, really an incredible coincidence. Who would’ve ever thought...» I reply with obvious sarcasm, turning to face them.

The two advance toward with long, heavy steps, moving farther and farther away from the mouth of the alley.

Those idiots walked straight into my trap — and now they have absolutely no chance of getting out alive.

They freeze in shock when I vanish before their eyes, only to reappear a mont later behind them, cutting off their only escape route.

Unfortunately for , it’s not so sophisticated, flashy vampiric teleportation spell. I simply combined my speed with the darkness around us, creating the illusion that I’d disappeared and reappeared by magic — just enough to scare them.

They spin around abruptly, exchanging a confused glance and muttering nervous insults. It’s obvious they didn’t like my little trick.

Ah... they can’t even imagine what awaits them. My mouth waters at the thought of their blood splattering across the asphalt, their heads rolling at my feet like waterlons. But I won’t kill them right away. First, I want to see the terror in their eyes — see them crying on their knees, trembling and begging for their lives. Only then will I be satisfied enough to end their agony.

«You enjoying ssing with ?! You’re really pissing off, kid. You have no idea who you’re dealing with!» Frank growls. «You gotta know that... I’m one of Hardley’s n! Yeah, you heard that right — John Hardley! You scared now, huh?! You regret making mad now, huh?!»

Wait a second — if these two really are John’s goons... they could be demons too. If that’s the case, I might’ve gotten myself into serious trouble. As much as I’ve improved, I doubt I could take on two demons at once. And above all... what if that bastard John himself sent them after ?! Why would he do that?!

I don’t even have ti to finish cursing myself for acting without thinking, because Frank pulls a gun from the inner pocket of his jacket and points it straight at my chest.

«W-Wait, boss... we weren’t supposed to kill the kid. We were just ant to teach him a lesson for daring to hit you. I’m not going back to jail over sothing this stupid!» Jamal stamrs nervously, but Frank doesn’t care in the slightest.

When I see the gun aid at , I let out a long sigh of relief.

He’s not a demon — otherwise, why would he resort to a normal firearm? And besides, he doesn’t even know I’m a vampire. If he did, he’d know damn well a simple pistol can’t kill .

That ans John has nothing to do with this, and these two are probably nothing more than miserable small fry, throwing around an important na just to feel tough.

And even if they really are John’s n, I doubt he’ll mourn their deaths.

Frank is about to pull the trigger, but suddenly he hesitates, his hands trembling as my eyes flare with a vivid crimson glow and a massive axe of solid blood takes shape in my grip.

«W-What kind of trick is this?!» Frank stamrs. «I-I’ll blow your brains out, you cheap magician!»

But just as he’s about to fire...

SLASH!

A heart-rending scream tears out of Frank’s throat. He clutches the spot where his right hand used to be — the one holding the gun — now lying at his feet.

A crimson fountain erupts from his wrist, and he collapses to his knees in front of , screaming and sobbing in agony as a pool of blood spreads beneath him.

Exactly what I needed to satisfy my keen sense of justice.

Perfect. Now I can kill them.

My axe gleams in the weak moonlight, ready to fall on the neck of that arrogant fat bastard, when...

CLANG!

Sothing wedges itself between the blade and his neck, stopping my strike.

A sword of white light — radiant, yet impossibly solid.

I recognize it instantly — it’s the weapon of a Monster Slayer.
