"Take a guess..." Ares said, amused.

"This is not funny! I won’t be able to live with myself if anything happens to him because his blood will be on my hands. I’m not having that on my conscience, you hear ?" I pointed a finger.

But so suddenly he seized my wrist and yanked close.

"Your mouth is getting sharper." He leaned to whisper in my ear. "Careful, babydoll..."

My heart raced for all the wrong reasons, and instead of fighting him off, I just relished the feel of his body against mine.

However, I summoned the courage, just enough to glare right at him.

"You two are like Tom and Jerry."

I jumped off his grip and kept a distance.

"Es!"

Es was sitting on the stairs, her palms pushing into her cheeks. "Mister King is Tom and Mommy’s Jerry."

"Why do you think so, angel?"

I slapped Ares on the chest when he asked that question.

Es held the railing for support and stood. "They are both chasing each other, with no progress." She shook her head like we were a lost cause before going up the stairs.

~☆~

Es was in the living room, on the floor, making a colorful drawing, feet up in the air as she wagged them back and forth.

I approached Ares, still engaged in his work, and he didn’t seem like he would be leaving anyti soon.

I cleared my throat. "Es told about Reed..." I began.

He’s clearly alive by no doubt, and that gave so relief.

"When are you leaving for Midnight?"

"Depends."

"Depends on what?"

"Es’s birthday is coming up soon. You have plans to be your grandparents."

"How did you..." I didn’t even bother to finish that sentence.

Of course, he knew.

"Yes, that was the plan, and I still intend on doing that."

Things have changed now, though, and how to stir the wheels from here was clueless to . I’d just stick to this visit for now.

"My private jet is yours."

"That’s not necessary and—"

"We’re lovers." He pinned with his eyes. "Things like this are normal. Sharing."

Is he trying to school right now? Coming from soone who has never been in a relationship before. At least he had ideas.

"I haven’t agreed to that yet."

Ares blinked.

"As you said, normal. When a guy asks a girl out, she has the right to say yes or no."

"Even though my fingers have been inside your pussy?"

"Ares!" I whispered-hissed, looking at Es, who was overly engrossed in her drawing.

"Call honey."

"Wha-Wha—" His hand grasped my waist and drew close until I was almost sitting on his lap.

I tensed when my hand pressed directly against his bulge. I leveled my gaze and, realizing my mistake, I shot them back to his eyes.

"You still won’t admit it, will you?" he murmured.

"Admit what?" I feigned ignorance.

"That you still love ."

It felt like needles were puncturing my tongue as I opened my mouth. "Feelings... change."

"Then I just have to make you fall in love with all over again."

His phone rang, and I easily pushed him off, trying to calm myself after he just uttered such words with certainty. That devil’s ego was bigger than that cock of his.

A frown crossed Ares’ expression as the call went on.

"Is sothing wrong?"

Ares took the phone off his ear and stood. "I have sothing to take care of. I’ll be back soon."

Before I could say anything, he kissed , devouring my mouth before he pulled back.

"When I get back, we’ll finish this conversation, and it will be the end of it."

"I wouldn’t count on that because we’re not having any."

The corner of his lips twitched. "Thirty."

He brushed past before I could understand what he ant. He kissed Es on her forehead, saying sothing to her before leaving.

I tried to ignore the sinking feeling at his sudden departure, but I quickly shoved it aside to dial Harper’s number to check on her.

I just recalled that Maria had a sick day for close to a week now, leaving Harper alone. She was good in the kitchen, but I was worried about the workload she had to endure. This was the weekend, and even though we sotis had a slow one, there was sotis a rush.

I waited for a long ti for her to return my call, because no matter what, Harper always does, she always has her earphones on all the ti.

So much for a day off.

"Sweetie, co on, we’re heading to the diner."

"Why?"

"We need to check up on Harper. Quickly now."

Es shoved her drawing into her book and rushed to .

Since we went on foot, it took a while, and the streetlights were already coming up.

"Don’t worry, you’ll have chocolate cake."

"Yes!"

I giggled when we neared the diner, the sign said ’Closed’. I blinked, checking the ti. It’s still too early for that.

"How am I gonna get chocolate cake now?" Es pouted.

"It’s okay, sweetie, let’s just go in first."

When we got to the door, I realized I had left my key.

"Shit! I an... oh no."

Es sighed and opened the door. "It’s open."

"Oh... would you look at that..."

"And you owe the swear jar, one dollar."

"Yeah, yeah."

We walked in, but it was dark.

"Stay close," I said, tapping my hand against the wall to find the switch, turning on the lights.

"Why did Harper close so early?"

I felt Es tuck my sweater, prompting to look where her gaze was.

"Maria?"

"Hi, boss." A smile curled on her black painted lips.

"What are you doing here? I thought you weren’t feeling—" I paused when I found her rotating a knife between her fingers skillfully.

That doesn’t look like she took that from the kitchen.

"Actually, I feel so much better now," she replied before shrugging. "I thought I stopped by."

Her clothes, too, were... different almost like she had switched. She was clad in leather from head to toe, her hair in a high ponytail.

Sothing’s wrong.

"Where’s Harper?" I asked, trying to act like I hadn’t discerned anything. "Is she here?"

"She’s occupied."

My blood ran cold when I spotted familiar boots, the rest hidden behind the counter.

"I quit, boss. I thought it was better I ca to tell you myself. Can we talk alone?"

I crouched to Es’s height and cupped her cheek. "Go to the kitchen. I need to speak with Maria alone." I kissed her cheek before I whispered. "Hide. Mommy will co find you."

Es didn’t argue; she snatched my bag from and ran through the swinging doors.

"Don’t worry, I won’t harm little Es." Maria got off the table, her heels clicking. Her fingers rotation stopped as she clutched the knife tightly.

"But you would harm ?" I asked, my voice hardening.

"No..." she murmured. "I’m gonna kill you. Quietly."
