I tried to stop every fiber in my bones, but I should have known by now that everything when it ca to Ares King was like an unwanted magnet.

I released a shaky exhale, closing my eyes briefly as a newfound strength was found. Get a fucking grip.

I opened the car door to leave, unexpectedly, even for .

"Catherine."

His voice stopped .

"Ms. Lane." I corrected.

I could feel his gaze drilling a hole into my head, as if luring to turn.

"When are you leaving Midnight?"

"I don’t think that’s any of your business..." I pinned him with a hard look.

We stayed like that again, eyes locked as if looking away was intolerable.

"You’re right," he replied, breaking the hot silence.

Why the heck would he agree to that when he was the one intruding?

That’s it! I have had enough of this Devil.

"One more thing, Mr. King."

"What, Ms. Lane?"

"Stop following , or else I’ll get a restraining order!" I stepped out of the car and slamd the door shut.

I didn’t stop. I was quick on my heels as I crossed the street to the building, going up the stairs, and when I halted to check the windows, the car remained there for an entire hour.

My heart thrashed heavily in my chest as I waited, for what? I had no fucking idea; all I knew was that I didn’t move until the car drove out.

~☆~

I kept tossing and turning on the bed. One position after the other was getting too uncomfortable for . Tori stirred a few tis, and I knew I was gonna wake her up if I kept doing this.

So I took the covers off , put on my glasses, and walked to the bathroom. I flicked on the light and neared the mirror, staring at my reflection.

I thought about what Agatha told , about her relationship with Ares, and Adrian being his son. I don’t believe a damn word she said because she ca at with no proof.

It was nothing less than the words of a snake; I had no idea what she tried to accomplish by telling lies. Whatever sick reason she had, I don’t want a part of it; she can burn in hell for all I care.

However, a part of wanted it to be true so that I could hate Ares.

"Hating him is the only way..." I said to myself.

I have to hate him no matter what so that I can move on.

I rested my hands on the sink, ducking my head to try to regulate my breathing, but it was a difficult task.

I’m still ntally stuck in that car. The tension that seized my every breath, how close we were to touching. If we had, I didn’t know what could have happened.

I could still discern the ghostly feel of his hand, how close he was. The sll of him, that cologne, mixed with aftershave and smoke. I normally don’t detect the smoke, but I do now, which could only an he’s been smoking a lot lately.

This wasn’t fair to . Here I was in the middle of the night when I should be sleeping, thinking about that man like he was the only breathing being on earth.

Why is he doing this to ? He ended the contract; he doesn’t love or want anything to do with anymore, so why is he still... invading?

I walked back to the room, hoping I could finally get a good night’s sleep, but I found myself in the kitchen.

Great. Nothing like a late-night snack. I haven’t been eating lately, I just forced myself whenever Tori was looking because I knew she was gonna nag to death.

I opened the fridge, and there was sothing alright, but I had gotten so used to a full fridge with no space left for anything else.

I took a small cup of Greek yogurt and a spoon. I walked to the window nook to sit. The spoon was halfway to my mouth when my eyes caught sothing.

I set the cup down and pushed the curtain apart to see. Just where the streetlight wouldn’t reach, there was a red dot, burning angrily. I focused hardly as the dot moved upwards, and it beca brighter.

There’s soone there.

My breathing hitched, and my entire nerves skyrocketed. I just knew... I could feel it.

I lingered for a while, just observing before I closed the curtains, my pulse racing so fast I couldn’t keep up.

I didn’t know how long I sat there, contemplating my life choices before I moved, shutting off my brain, not because I was desperate or anything, just so fucking pissed that what drove was rage.

I grabbed a coat, put on so Crocs, and left the apartnt. I hurried down the stairs before I pushed the door open. It was so fucking late that not a single soul was out here.

This was stupid. You’re fucking stupid Catherine Lane.

I adjusted my glasses as I crossed the street, and the closer I got, the more I could see.

Ares was standing close to his car, out here in the cold, smoking. His blue eyes glowed in the dark as he stalked my every move until I stood a few feet away from him.

"You shouldn’t be out here. It’s cold."

I clenched my teeth. "I should say the sa for you. What. Are. You. Doing?"

Cold silence swirled through like the icy wind.

"Old habits die hard."

I couldn’t understand what he ant. It’s not like the almighty Ares King was a stalker. Where the heck did this behavior spawn from?

"I warned you," I said. "I’m gonna go straight to the precinct to report your ass."

He flicked what was left of his cigar to the ground and pushed off his car.

I gulped thickly when he straightened his stance, and I had to tilt my chin just to maintain eye contact.

"The cops won’t do much."

"Then I’ll get a fucking lawyer and sue."

"That’ll be a waste of money."

"What’s your fucking problem?!"

I wasn’t sure he had an answer to that question. Well, I have one for him...

"Leave!"
