(POV switch – Adil)

Adil, the current crown prince of the Kururuan Dragon Empire, was in the royal capital.

Since being granted permission to attend the military academy, Adil had been allowed quite a bit of freedom in his actions. He was not assigned any personnel to monitor him, and as long as he kept the special residence permit bearing Yuri Hou’s personal signature on him at all tis, there were hardly any restrictions on his movents. His treatnt was closer to that of a foreign exchange student than a prisoner.

On the day the rebellion broke out, Adil had been staying overnight at a friend’s house in the capital. Among his friends from the military academy, there had been a plan to enjoy their day off in the flower-filled royal capital. When the royal capital was occupied and its rulers changed, Adil was required to make his own decisions.

Because his mother was from the Tyrell region in the south, Adil’s skin was fair for soone from the southern regions. Of course, it was not as pale as that of the Shanti, but there were also sailors and others with sun-tanned skin, so walking through town did not make him stand out too much.

However, his facial features were impossible to disguise. Even if he hid his ears, his distinct, sharply defined face seed a bit unnatural for a Shanti. Even in ordinary tis, he was often stopped by the city guards. At those tis, showing his residence permit would solve the issue without any trouble, but under the control of the rebel army, such a solution was obviously not going to work. He could have wrapped a cloth around his face to hide it, but that would make him look suspicious in a different way. For that reason, Adil remained hidden in the royal capital, sheltered in the ho of a friend from a family of palace guards.

He spent his days indoors and went out only at night. Thanks to the training he had received at the military academy, even if he ran long distances, he did not tire easily, and he could outrun the guards if they found him suspicious. The guards of the Rube Household wore chainmail and carried spears, so when it ca to a chase, he had the advantage.

One day, when he returned just before dawn, he was told that the Rube Household’s guards had co by while he was out. However, they did not seem suspicious that he was being hidden there, did not search the house, and apparently just showed a few sketches of important fugitives before leaving. His likeness was not among the sketches. It did not seem like he was on a wanted list or even being watched. Perhaps, to the Rube Household, Adil’s existence didn’t matter.

However, the secret agreent between the Shaalta Kingdom and the Kururuan Dragon Empire had been made solely by Yuri Hou. There was no guarantee that Liao Rube would follow Yuri’s progressive thinking. If discovered, Adil could be used as a bargaining chip against the Dragon Empire. Ordinarily, it would make sense for him not to remain in the capital but to travel under the cover of night to the Hou Household’s territory. He had been trained for that, and it was not particularly difficult. However, Adil had a reason he could not do that.

After several nightti visits, he was finally able to see her face.

Sher Marmaset, returning ho alone, took out her key from her bag. Just as she opened the door, he called out to her.

“Sher.” (Adil)

“Whoa!” (Sher)

Sher turned toward him in surprise, then said with visible relief, “Oh, it’s you”.

“You’re safe?” (Adil)

“…You ca because you were worried about ? You’re the one in danger, aren’t you?” (Sher)

“No need to worry. I’m not the sa person I was back then.” (Adil)

When he said that, Sher let out a small laugh.

“That’s a rather formal expression for soone speaking Shanti in the streets. Well, co in. It’s safe here.” (Sher)

Sher opened the entrance and invited Adil inside.

The sound of teacups clinking softly filled the room as the tea was brought in. The teacup was placed before him with the pleasant carelessness reserved for close companions. As he sipped, a floral aroma spread across his palate.

“I heard the forr Witches were having a rough ti, so I was worried.” (Adil)

He had heard that bureaucrats assigned to the royal castle were being taken to the Witches’ forest after work and kept in confinent, practically treated like slaves. There were also no small number of cases where forr Witches, who had succeeded through their business acun, were falsely accused and had their assets confiscated. Since Sher was among the most successful of the forr Witches, he had been very worried about her.

“Did you co to rescue because I was going through a rough ti?” (Sher)

“Yeah. You hadn’t been ho for several days, so I was thinking of starting to look into where you might be tomorrow.” (Adil)

“Look into it? How exactly? With the way you look, just gathering information would be a pain.” (Sher)

“There’s no helping it. I’ll think about that after I try.” (Adil)

“You’re hopeless. Also, you know, people don’t usually use ‘there’s no helping it’ in everyday conversation.” (Sher)

“They do at the military academy.” (Adil)

It was used in argunts when soone pointed out the recklessness of a strategy. Like, “It was a situation where there was no helping it.”

“With Shanti like that, you’ll be found out in no ti. Your intonation still has quirks that don’t belong to any dialect.” (Sher)

“I’ll be found out by my face anyway, so it doesn’t matter. More importantly, even if you’re safe for now, is it alright not to run? If you want, I’ll escort you to the Hou Household’s territory. We’d have to go through the forest though.” (Adil)

A journey of escape with Sher sounded like it could be fun.

“It’s fine. I’m working with Liao Rube right now.” (Sher)

In that instant, his mind went completely blank.

“With Liao Rube? Why?” (Adil)

“Because I didn’t like Gudanvier. Did you know? Their house is far below mine, the very lowest among the Seven Great Witch Houses. And she’s the only Witch? Isn’t that just laughable?” (Sher)

Apparently, Sher had harbored a kind of resentnt toward Myaro Gudanvier deep down.

Was that the reason she had done sothing so foolish?

“That doesn’t matter. What, specifically, did you do?” (Adil)

If she had only signed a docunt supporting the usurping regi, maybe she could still be forgiven. She could insist that she had no choice but to sign under threat.

“I sheltered so of the forr Knight families who rose up in the capital. I only arranged rooms for them, sothing like that. It wasn’t a big deal.” (Sher)

That was no good. She was directly involved. Yuri Hou was not the type to execute entire families, but he was not soft-hearted enough to show rcy to those who directly cooperated with the rebellion.

“That’s a death sentence. What were you thinking, doing sothing like that?” (Adil)

“Yuri Hou can’t return from the continent. There’s a sche keeping him away.” (Sher)

There had yet to be any news that Yuri Hou had returned to the peninsula.

“You actually believed that story?” (Adil)

“He’s successfully captured Sibyaku, hasn’t he?” (Sher)

Adil could not understand the thoughts of the Sher standing before him.

She was supposed to be far more intelligent than he was. Why couldn’t she grasp sothing so simple? They had captured Sibyaku while its master was away. So what? To stab soone in the back, one needs no talent worthy of history. All it takes is enough trust for soone to turn their back to you, and the treachery to betray that trust.

It was no proof of any real ability.

“Are you stupid? A usurpation like this can’t possibly succeed. If you studied Kururuan history, you should at least know about the ‘Seven-Day Rule.’ This is the sa.” (Adil)

“I know it might fail.” (Sher)

“Idiot! What do you think Yuri Hou is? He’s the genius who revived a declining, crumbling nation to this point. There’s no way he’d fall so easily to sothing like this. If you’d betrayed him and killed him first, that’d be one thing, but he’s still alive!” (Adil)

If you’re going to launch a rebellion against Yuri Hou, the only option is to kill him in your first move.

Adil didn’t know what sweet talk from the Isus faith had influenced Liao Rube, but he saw him as an incredibly complacent man.

“It’s fine. Yuri Hou is just soone who happened to climb up by seducing the princess.” (Sher)

Adil was stunned. His mouth hung open, unable to form words.

Too naive…

Whether she didn’t want to acknowledge the administration run jointly by Yuri Hou and Myaro Gudanvier, or she simply lacked the knowledge to properly evaluate military accomplishnts, he could not tell, but her understanding was terribly biased. A brilliant mind, fluent in three languages and successful in running a private school, was failing to grasp sothing so simple. Adil felt as though he were witnessing one of the inexplicable mysteries of humankind.

“…Weren’t you the one who hated the Rube Household in the first place?” (Adil)

“Rabero Rube died in the war. Kien Rube is gone too. I don’t like them, but I don’t bear a grudge against Liao Rube.” (Sher)

“Then, it was just that you didn’t like Myaro Gudanvier? But she…” (Adil)

He had overheard sowhere that she was Liao Rube’s beloved. Among the rumors he had heard more than once, so had escalated to say that Liao Rube started the rebellion to take her from Yuri Hou.

“That was a miscalculation. I naturally assud she’d be executed once caught, but to think she had been romantically involved with Liao Rube from the beginning. That vixen really got .” (Sher)

Apparently, Myaro Gudanvier had been a co-conspirator in the rebellion from the start. This was a new theory for Adil. If that were the case, then Sher, who had been acting to bring her down, was instead being used by her. Even so, right now was a ti when such rumors were flying in every direction. The theory that she had been a co-conspirator was not necessarily reliable. Rather, to Adil, it looked as though Sher wanted to believe it.

If she assud that as a premise, then even if Yuri Hou returned, Myaro Gudanvier would likely be executed along with Liao Rube. Without the wisdom of the woman who had overseen the internal affairs of the administration, the ability to track down the rebels through every nook and cranny would significantly drop. In that case, the chance of Sher being overlooked would be high. Perhaps she wanted to believe in that reassurance deep down.

“Sher, you made the wrong decision. You must not cooperate with Liao Rube anymore.” (Adil)

“I get it. After I found out Myaro Gudanvier was close with him, I haven’t cooperated with him.” (Sher)

“Good, then. I’m going now. I’m escaping to the Hou Household’s territory.” (Adil)

Adil said this as he stood up from the chair, drained the rest of his tea, and began to prepare to leave. Now that it had co to this, acting as soon as possible was the right choice. That was what he had been taught at the military academy.

Sher looked surprised. It seed she hadn’t expected him to flee to the Hou Household’s territory.

“If that’s what you were going to do, you should’ve escaped when the Rube Household showed up. Instead of staying in such a dangerous place.” (Sher)

That was exactly right. Sher was safe in this city. At least, until Yuri Hou returned to the peninsula. There was no need to worry about her safety.

“It can’t be helped. Doing sothing stupid for the sake of a woman you love, that’s what being a man is. Running off alone would be disgraceful for a man.” (Adil)

Saying this while opening the front door, Adil thought…

Maybe, just maybe, Liao Rube had felt the sa way.
