The next morning.
The third day of prison life officially began, and today the work for B-level prisoners was...
Farming.
This was sothing that took Jiang Shu by surprise, even more so was the fact that, in addition to farming, there even was a small-scale livestock industry. At this rate, it seed that the place could pretty much be self-sufficient.
Self-sufficient in a place like Lonely City?
Was the Special Prison trying to beco independent? Rebel?
Jiang Shu began to let his imagination run wild again. His movents with the hoe were inconsistent, light one mont and heavy the next; fortunately, Clo was diligently working alongside him.
He glanced at Clo, and could not help but feel emotional inside, thinking that no tis were entirely peaceful; it was only because soone else was shouldering the burdens that you could feel it so.
Clo, however, wore a serious face, his brows furrowed in worry as he steadily hoed the soil.
A doubt crept into Jiang Shu’s mind; could it be that even a person versed in the Technique could have unhappy monts?
"What’s wrong?" he asked. "Did you discover sothing yesterday?"
"More or less." Clo seed unwilling to keep secrets from Jiang Shu. He glanced around; they were in the middle of a field with caras sparsely dotted along the ridges.
"I’ll handle the surveillance caras in a bit, but after today, I won’t be doing this kind of thing anymore." Clo spoke softly. "The Prison Guards have beco suspicious."
"Okay." Jiang Shu nodded, but his mind was elsewhere. With Sister Ru around, you really don’t need to worry about the surveillance caras, yet fearing that the clever Clo might guess sothing, Jiang Shu kept his lips sealed.
"And that woman, if she can leave, tell her to get away from here as soon as possible." Clo continued, "I think I’ve figured out what that guy wants to do."
"Who? What does he want to do? What did you actually find yesterday?" Jiang Shu rattled off a barrage of questions, instinctively sensing the whiff of danger.
"A madman," Clo said blandly. "Unfortunately, I can’t stop him anymore."
"What is he trying to do?"
"Do you know what cos after a First Level Mutant in the Sequence of Mutants?" Clo sat up, his eyes shining in the darkness.
"Uh..." Jiang Shu pondered for two seconds before slowly speaking, his voice confident and certain, "Second Level Mutants."
Clo: "..."
Public farting is prohibited.
"Becoming sothing else, settings, atmosphere, and such," Jiang Shu answered seriously, according to what Wolf had explained to him.
"Right, sothing like that." Clo nodded, "So, if a Mutant becos a scene, what happens to the people who were originally in the scene?"
"What would happen?" Jiang Shu had a guess in his mind, and following that guess led to an even more terrifying scenario.
"They will coexist with the scene-type Mutants, beco immortal; that guy, he should have died a long ti ago, but he does not want to die."
"He wants to live forever in this prison," Clo said slowly.
And suddenly, Jiang Shu understood. No wonder the Special Prison needed to be self-sufficient; it turned out that madman had started preparing for immortality long ago.
"So..." Jiang Shu hesitated.
"Escape. I’ll take you with to break out," Kro looked at him, enunciating each word. "I’m not sure how far he’s gotten, nor do I know when this place will turn into a Second Level Mutant fortress..."
"Anyway, we need to act quickly."
Jiang Shu looked at him, his eyes narrowing involuntarily.
Dinner ti, cafeteria.
Without asking for Jiang Shu’s opinion, Clo had already started planning the escape, and Jiang Shu was happy to let him do so, listening intently.
"The Special Prison’s design adopts the inverted fortress model," Clo said, tracing the prison’s layout on the table with his thick soup.
"Inverted fortress? What does that an?" Jiang Shu didn’t understand the technical term.
"Inverted fortress refers to the above-ground section," Clo explained as he pointed with his spoon to the three-story building he had drawn on the table. "The function of a fortress is to prevent enemies from entering, while those inside can see what is happening in all directions outside."
"Then..."
"Right. The design of the inverted fortress essentially flips the inside to the outside, switching the functions so that from the outside one can see the inmates leaving the main building," Clo continued. "Even if one escapes from the Special Prison, the nearby terrain is open with clear visibility, making it easy to be pursued and caught."
"So what now?" Jiang Shu asked, the design sounding very escape-unfriendly.
"To escape, thods typically involve digging tunnels, finding ventilation shafts, or climbing walls, and while these might have been possible in the old prisons of forty, fifty years ago, now..." Clo shook his head. "Even if I can take care of the biggest problem—the caras—it’s impossible. The entire building is built from specially mixed concrete. If you try to dig with a spoon, by the ti you break out, it would be practically the sa as a life sentence."
"Then how are we supposed to escape?" Jiang Shu pondered but didn’t see any good solution, at least not from his standpoint...
He couldn’t do it.
Unless he could teleport back to the city or clear a path with a mighty warrior’s strength.
"Hmm, I’ve bribed a Prison Guard," Clo said with a gravely serious expression.
Jiang Shu: "..."
Is that all?
Do the top escape artists often use the most plain and unadorned thods?
The approach of money, forever the God.
He also suddenly understood why Clo was able to have such a prominent influence in this place, able to enter the surveillance room whenever he wanted.
With money, and being smart enough, even in prison, one could thrive.
