A gentle warmth of magic pulsed, and Jurim slowly opened his eyes.
The first thing he saw was a tiny green sprout.
It sat atop soft beige hair, poking upward—and by now, he was used to it.
Looks like she’s regaining her energy.
The once-droopy sprout now stood upright and vibrant. Smiling faintly, Jurim kissed her crown and gently wrapped her soft body in his arms.
But the child squird with little grunts and pushed his arm away.
“...?”
Still groggy, Jurim sat up and stared blankly as Guru slipped out from her bed, which was overflowing with stuffed animals.
“Where are you going...?”
“Wawk!”
A walk? He rubbed his eyes and followed her up.
“A walk, all of a sudden?”
Guru puffed up her cheeks as she tugged up the straps of her loose overalls.
“Not aww of a sudden. Gwuu pwomised wif Daddy.”
“Oh.”
Now that she was five, Guru had forced a few one-sided promises onto Jurim.
One of them was: ‘I’ll take responsibiwity fow what Gwuu bwing ho!’
He hadn’t been thrilled about it, but he figured it was important for kids to learn how to make and keep promises, so he had decided to let it go... for now.
Jurim followed Guru’s quick little steps out into the living room—and frowned at what he saw.
“...What is this supposed to be?”
“Wawk ti!”
Guru bead as she held up a leash.
It was a dog leash.
Jurim stared at the boy wearing the dog leash around his neck. No matter how he looked at him—he was clearly human.
“...You’re taking him?”
“Yesh!”
Guru stood with the leash in hand, proudly attached to a child around her age, who wore a collar.
“Snaaahh—”
The boy in question, Veilach, let out a loud yawn, seemingly unbothered by any of this.
Ding-a-ling—
A little bell on his neck chid softly.
Guru gripped the leash with determination and declared,
“Gwuu keeps pwomises weally weawwy good!”
“...Okay, just—don’t go out like that. Absolutely not.”
“Hmm?”

Veilach nodded lazily. Guru grinned and pulled out a pink strap.

Jurim lunged forward and snatched that away too.
“No chest harnesses either!”
Guru let out a long, dramatic sigh, her lips forming a small triangle.
“Eeeehhh...”
On Jurim still found parenting incredibly difficult.
