"Ah!"

Chloe Preston was startled and struggled. Her phone slipped from her grasp, hitting the ground with a SNAP.

"What happened?"

Donovan Xavier gently pinched her slender arm, exuding an aura of nobility as he pulled her into his warm embrace.

Hearing the familiar voice, Chloe finally cald down and patted her chest. "It’s you."

Just a mont ago, she had instinctively thought soone was trying to harm her, to stab her brutally and kill her. The re thought sent a chill down her spine.

Donovan touched her hair and smiled softly. "When did you beco so timid? To get scared by sothing like this."

Chloe remained silent.

A bodyguard stepped forward, bent down, picked up her phone, and handed it to her.

"How is your dad?" he asked.

"He’s okay."

Donovan took her hand. "I’ll go check on him."

"No need, he just fell asleep," Chloe said, looking up to see a Bentley parked not far away.

The car door opened, and a man stepped out. He was dressed in a dark brown suit, standing tall and straight with an extraordinary presence. As he drew closer, she could see his features clearly. They were well-defined and handso, with a touch of wildness. His dark eyes shone brightly, exuding a faint, nacing aura.

He looked like soone not to be trifled with.

The man walked straight over. With a smile in his eyes, he looked at Donovan. "Mr. Xavier, is this your wife?"

With one hand in his pocket, Donovan smiled. "Yes. Make sure you co on our wedding day."

"Of course."

Chloe glanced at Donovan, her expression seeming to ask, Your friend?

Donovan held her hand and made the introduction. "Chloe, this is Vance Hawthorne, the eldest son of the Hawthorne Family from Portdrey. They have many business dealings with the Xavier Group, and he’s here in Kryton today to discuss a partnership with ."

Vance looked at Chloe and extended his hand, his smile polite and without the slightest hint of condescension. "Hello, I’m Vance Hawthorne."

Chloe shook his hand. "Hello."

"And Mrs. Xavier’s na is?" Vance asked, raising an eyebrow with a warm smile.

Chloe smiled faintly. "Just call Chloe Preston."

She thought for a mont before adding, "If I rember correctly, you’re Nathan and Jasper’s older brother?"

Vance nodded. "Yes. A while back, Jasper ntioned eting a woman in Kryton who bears a striking resemblance to him."

As he spoke, he studied the woman before him. "Yes, indeed," he smiled. "Your eyebrows and eyes do resemble my brother’s. But if he were a girl, he wouldn’t be nearly as beautiful as you."

He had to admit, the woman before him was stunningly beautiful. With her elegance and charm, she had to be the precious daughter of so distinguished family. It made him think of his own little sister, who should have been raised as a pampered princess but was lost instead. For years, they had left no stone unturned trying to find her, but she remained missing. Honestly, though they didn’t want to admit it, it was highly likely that their little sister was already dead.

Chloe asked, "So you ca to the hospital because...?"

"I have a slight fever," Vance replied softly. "I happened to hear Mr. Xavier say he was coming to pick you up, so I tagged along. I mainly needed to get so dicine, but I also wanted to see for myself how much his wife resembles my brother."

For so reason, his first glance at this woman gave him a strange sense of long-lost familiarity. What a strange feeling.

Donovan chuckled deeply from the side. "Well, you’ve seen her now. My wife is tired from standing for so long. If there’s nothing else, I need to take her ho."

Vance smiled. "Mr. Xavier, you really do dote on your wife. Alright, I won’t disturb you two. I’m heading in."

Chloe stood rooted to the spot, her lips pursed slightly as she watched his tall figure walk away.

Donovan suddenly leaned in close, his thin lips brushing against her ear as he chuckled. "Babe, why were you staring at him for so long?"

"He just seed... familiar," Chloe responded.

"Hmm?"

Chloe looked at him. "It’s just a feeling, like I’ve t him before."

Donovan’s face darkened.

Chloe looped her arm through his and smiled. "You get jealous over just a few words. He’s a young master from Portdrey; how could I possibly know him?"

"Honey, let’s go ho."

...

The moonlight was like water that night at the Xavier Residence.

In the room, Chloe stood alone in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, quietly gazing at the sycamore tree outside.

Suddenly, her phone chid with a notification.

Chloe opened it and read.

[Final warning: Leave Kryton in three days, or even Donovan Xavier won’t be able to save your life.]

Chloe tightened her grip on the phone, taking a soft, sharp breath.

Who on earth could this be?

The next mont, a cold hand touched her arm, rubbing it gently.

Chloe put her phone away and turned her head slightly. "Finished your shower?"

Donovan hugged her from behind, the veins on his forearms standing out, his chin resting in the crook of her neck. His entire body emanated a cool, damp air. He was handso and captivating. He lacked the sharp, cold aura he carried during the day, replaced now with a touch of gentleness.

He gently nibbled her earlobe. The tickling, tingling sensation sent a shiver through her.

Moving lower, he kissed her smooth, fair shoulder and neck.

Her shoulder strap was pulled down as his hand began to roam upward, audacious and restless.

Chloe couldn’t bear it, her face blushing as she squird away. "Honey..."

"Please don’t."

Donovan cupped her chin with one hand, forcing her to look straight at him. His lips were close to hers as he laughed hoarsely. "You sound so sweet when you say that."

"Good girl, Chloe. Say it again."

Chloe’s face was flushed and burning hot. She was unable to speak.

Donovan stopped his teasing and gently kissed her hair. His voice was deep and raspy. "Chloe, I’m taking you to Ryston tomorrow."
