Chapter 241: Chapter 241: She Has the Final Say

Aaron Cheney’s jaw dropped. "So that’s why Nathaniel started jade gambling! It was Vera all along!"

Then he added with a look of pure adoration, "Vera is incredible!"

For Nathaniel Nathan, hearing others praise Vera Xavier brought him far more joy than any praise directed at himself.

He stared at the piece of Emperor Green, lost in thought. The raw jade shipped to Crestfall was generally of poor quality, mostly just to satisfy a few local enthusiasts who enjoyed trying their luck on the stones.

He knew for a fact that Vera had never left Crestfall in her life. That meant she had picked out the raw stones for both the Full House Red and the Emperor Green from that pile of otherwise worthless rocks.

Finding the Full House Red could be chalked up to luck. But now, finding an Emperor Green on top of that? Could that still be called luck? If so, her luck was simply off the charts.

Nathaniel, however, had never believed in the concept of luck. To him, what people called "luck" was simply ability finally manifesting itself for all to see.

What he couldn’t figure out, however, was how Vera could have been so certain about what was inside the stone. After all, there wasn’t even the slightest hint of a cut window on it when it was handed to him.

Preoccupied with his thoughts, Nathaniel wasn’t in the mood to entertain Aaron. He thanked Yorke Young and turned to leave.

Yorke Young called out to him, "Young Master Nathan, is this jade for sale?"

Nathaniel turned to look at him. Though he was Aaron’s uncle, the man was only in his thirties and looked sharp and capable. Right now, however, he looked rather emotional as he spoke. "If you do sell it, could you possibly sell me a small piece? My mom constantly talks about a pair of jade earrings she had that were confiscated by the state years ago. I want to have a new pair made for her, just like the old ones."

The Young Family had once been prominent in Crestfall. But during the "Smash the Four Olds" campaign in the early years of the new government, their home was ransacked. Mrs. Young didn’t have time to hide her favorite pair of earrings, and they were taken. She had been heartbroken about it for all these years.

Yorke Young was a devoted son and was set on having a new pair made for his mother. However, not only was high-quality jade expensive, but it was also hard to come by in Crestfall. The pieces sold in shops were already finished jewelry, so they couldn’t be crafted into the custom design he wanted.

He had never had much money himself, so he couldn’t afford to spend a fortune on raw stones. When he saw this piece of jade today, he knew it was a true masterpiece. If he let this opportunity slip by, there was no telling when he’d find another.

He met Nathaniel’s gaze and added sheepishly, "I know that cutting a piece off would lower the value of the whole thing, but I really don’t have the money to buy a piece this large. So... I was hoping you might be willing to sell me just a small corner of it?"

Aaron Cheney quickly chimed in, "Nathaniel, my grandmother has been going on about those earrings for decades. If it’s not too much trouble, please sell a small piece to us. I promise we’ll pay the full market price."

Nathaniel shot him a look. "Are you really that dense, or are you just pretending? I just told you. This jade belongs to Vera."

"But what’s Vera’s is yours, isn’t it!" Aaron said quickly.

Those words pleased Nathaniel immensely, and he clapped Aaron on the shoulder. "In our family, I make the decisions on all the big things, and she handles the small things. However... she’s the one who decides what’s big and what’s small."

Yorke Young: "..."

Aaron Cheney: "..."

’So the brilliant, all-powerful Nathaniel is actually... whipped?’

Nathaniel’s brow furrowed as he looked at the two utterly shocked men. "If you want to buy the stone, go talk to Vera."
