36: Chapter 36 turns out to be a farming chain quest!

36: Chapter 36 turns out to be a farming chain quest!

“How do you know she’s an important NPC for managing the vegetable garden?”

“Because she’s holding a hoe.”

“But she hasn’t been digging.”

“Do you really expect an NPC to farm in the ga?”

“Then why are you staring all the ti?”

“I’m wondering if the ga might have a farming feature!”

“Oh!”

“Oh?

I’m researching the ga system, what are you researching?”

“I’m thinking about what to eat later.”

Romantic Bumbler and Ace Aimu stood outside the vegetable garden, having a simple discussion about the conversation they had just had.

The two of them were old friends by now.

As two of the three unlucky ones who had “gotten lost” upon entering the ga and were then captured and sacrificed, their luck was still considered good.

At least they had been arranged to stay within the rather famous Newbie Village.

Among the three thousand beta testers, the armants available for purchase at Star Dragon Ridge were ranked within the top 5, but in terms of long-term developnt, they’re probably at the bottom of the list.

A total of nine soldiers — less than what many small settlents had.

Other territories likely had heroes like Lord Lind who were above level 10, making Star Dragon Ridge not particularly competitive.

It was only considered the special Newbie Village that was most suitable for pioneering and obtaining the best equipnt at the start.

The two were casual players, the type that Lind least wanted in his heart.

Although having no ambition ant they wouldn’t be lured by other forces, and casual players were the most devoted type, lack of ambition also ant they wouldn’t be involved in cutthroat competition, not going all out to bring Lind more benefits.

If you’re playing a ga and you neither spend money nor grind, that’s just too much.

Ace Aimu walked towards the girl standing in front of the vegetable garden with a hoe.

If he had to rank his favorite gas, they would probably be Sumr Rhapsody, Winter Rhapsody, Country Rhapsody, Stardew Valley Stories — yes, he was a player who loved farming and managent gas.

So, seeing her potentially working the soil, he imdiately approached her.

“Hello, is there anything I can help you with?”

The girl was startled when suddenly addressed.

She rembered the job Lord had given her well.

If she wanted to survive at Star Dragon Ridge, she had to do her job and always be careful with her words and actions.

Her job was to guard the vegetable garden.

Even though Lord knew that the potatoes would never mature and sprout continuously, only to end up rotting, that was her job, especially since a large group of Undead had appeared out of nowhere today, changing her task to staying here from when she woke up in the morning until nightti, except when eating or relieving herself.

Her main job was to randomly give orders to any Undead who ca to chat, and Lord had also given her many Rand Gold Coins.

A few years ago, she would have treasured such heavy things, one coin could buy her whole family, but now she just found them heavy and uncomfortably cold to hold in the winter.

“…”

Ace Aimu stared at the girl for several monts.

An ordinary-looking girl with a sallow complexion and thin features, her lips moved slightly but she didn’t dare to speak.

She was truly a pitiable girl.

After confirming his arrival at Star Dragon Ridge, Ace Aimu imdiately caught up on related videos, especially those battles between Loves White Silk and others against Wanderer’s Camp, which many people had watched right away.

Ace Aimu knew this girl must be one of the won and children whom Loves White Silk and the others had saved.

“I…” The girl fiddled with her clothes, knowing the horror of the Undead.

Though she hadn’t witnessed the battle the previous night, she had heard the detailed accounts from a few Soldier Masters.

Of course, Lord was the bravest, but the Undead, who kept dying and coming back to life, were even more terrifying.

“Are you farming?” Ace Aimu squatted down, feeling he should initiate conversation, “What are you planting?”

“Pota…

potatoes,” the girl replied with difficulty.

He added in his mind, “Although it’s impossible to grow anything ever again.”

“I rember that food is scarce at the Star Dragon Ridge outpost,” Ace Aimu said.

Although he was not keen on killing and arson, it didn’t an he was unaware of the situation, especially the steep price of 10 pounds of food for 2 Rand Gold Coins, which was quite morable.

“The whole world is short of food,” the girl finally relaxed her attitude when she noticed the two Undead had no hostile intentions, much like a fluffed-up cat that flattens its arching back, “But this land has been abandoned by magic, cursed by calamity, and it’s no longer possible to grow food here.”

“Can I have a look?” Ace Aimu went straight to work.

Players really wouldn’t care what NPCs think.

The reason he asked was a subconscious action; he subconsciously treated the other person as a living being.

After asking, even Ace Aimu himself was stunned for a mont.

He thought to himself, “This ga is just too realistic.”

Be it expressions, atmosphere, or actions, if it wasn’t for the knowledge that he could quit the ga, he really, really would believe he had transposed into a magical post-apocalyptic world.

Suddenly, he found the idea interesting; if there really was a transmigrator who ended up in this kind of world, how pitiful would that be, haha.

After shoving aside the random thoughts in his mind, Ace Aimu dug through the loose soil and saw the “potato.”

The sprouted, shriveled chunks of potato.

In a state of struggling to grow and close to death.

“They won’t grow?” Ace Aimu asked while holding the potato chunk, which was lucky because he was an agricultural college student.

“Yeah,” the girl nodded, repeating what she had heard from sowhere, “The land has been cursed by calamity.”

Ace Aimu didn’t take it seriously, as repeated lines indicated that NPC’s level of intelligence was not high.

“That’s not right, though.

If you can’t grow anything, what do you eat?” His interest in the logic of this ga piqued; on land where food couldn’t grow and people had to eat, there must be a bug sowhere, right?

“There’s mutated food,” the girl looked at Ace Aimu with an odd gaze, not understanding why he wasn’t aware of common knowledge.

“Cough!” Ace Aimu choked, while his mind grasped the key point, “Mutated plants, why don’t you grow mutated food instead of these?”

He shook the soft, sprouting potato in his hand.

“Mutated food only grows around the Calamity Shadow, and it’s hard to digest.

If you eat too much, your body will mutate,” the girl explained, while thinking to herself that even mutated food wasn’t sothing you could just eat whenever you wanted.

“Debuff food, huh.” Ace Aimu nodded in understanding, indicating he got it.

Maybe eating too much would grow an extra pair of arms or maybe two heads?

Were these people all looking normal because they usually ate regular food and thus were fine, or was it that even mutated food wasn’t enough to fill them, so there was no chance to mutate?

He looked back and saw Romantic Bumbler itching to try: “Hey, Romantic Bumbler, you don’t really want to taste it, do you?”

“No!” Romantic Bumbler shook his head, “I know it has to be cooked at least.”

“You’d better know that!”

“So, regular food can’t grow in the field, and mutated seeds must be planted in the Shadow Zone,” Ace Aimu suddenly raised his eyebrows, “Hey, didn’t Brother De say sothing about the Scavenger’s Nest?”

It seed he had found a natural planting field.

“Brother De didn’t say we couldn’t use debuff food for the quest!”

Ace Aimu’s eyes brightened as he looked at the girl, “Where can I find those mutated seeds?”

“I’m not sure, you might want to ask soone else,” the girl shook her head decisively.

Mutation, Calamity…

now that she was living at Star Dragon Ridge, she wanted to stay as far away from those things as possible.

“I get it now.

This must be part of a chain quest.”

He stood up, looking at Romantic Bumbler, “Co on, let’s go find out information about the mutated seeds!”
