This is it, Helena said. She glanced at the demon standing beside her. The two were standing in front of a church. You really have a plan?

Of course, Tafel said. I guarantee that it likely wont fail.

Helena thought it over and asked, You an you guarantee theres a chance of failure? However, before she could finish her sentence, Tafel had already pushed open the door to the church. When the door swung open, a gust of wind swept in from behind, rustling Helenas skirt. She inched to the side to peek over Tafels shoulder and gasped. The church was filled to the brim. Everyone from the town was inside, and all of their heads were turned to stare at the entrance.

Tafel was unphased as she stepped inside and looked around. Surprisingly, no one scread, but a child did start crying. His mother clamped her hand over his mouth and turned his head towards herself. Tafel strolled down the aisle, ignoring the people sitting on the benches, and stopped once she reached the podium where a lavishly dressed priest was standing with a pale face. He was the sa man that proclaid Helena as a witch. He raised a trembling arm and pointed at Tafel. Y-you cant be here. This is the house of the Lord.

Tafel placed her hands on her hips. Im here now. What are you going to do about it?

The priest looked around, but all he saw was the fear in the faces of the townsn. He took a step back and almost tripped. He glanced behind himself and saw a short sword embedded in an altar at the base of a statue. It was a decorative sword ant to be used symbolically for so performances, but it was still better than no sword at all. He drew it and whirled around, pointing it at Tafel. Im going

Thwap!

The sword flew through the air and embedded itself into the wall. The priest stared at Tafel with a blank expression. She had used her bare hand to smack the sword away. Your posture is terrible, Tafel said and put her right hand back on her hip. Your grip was completely wrong too. If youre not used to wielding swords, you shouldnt play around with them.

E-everyone! the priest said. If we work together, we can kill this devil! This is a trial from God!

Tafel raised her hand as her horns shone with a blue light. Two dos of ice rose out of the ground and encaged the townsn sitting on the benches. Tafel left holes inside of ice to let the townsn breathe. There were a few shocked gasps, but no one shouted or try to break the ice. They huddled together and lowered their heads instead. The priests jaws dropped at the sight, and he took another step back. W-what do you want? he asked, not daring to look Tafel in the eyes. He clasped his cross necklace and stared at the ground, wanting to sink into it and disappear.

I just want you to know that Im not a devil, and Helenas not a witch. Tafel gestured for Helena to co over. According to her, the church falsely accuses people of being witches in order to take their wealth and property.

Thats not true! the priest said and raised his head. He withered under Tafels glare, his head shrinking down into his shoulders.

Are you calling Helena a liar? Tafel asked and raised an eyebrow.

Shes a witch, the priest mumbled. A-and how can you say youre not a devil when you have horns on your head and purple eyes?

Im a demon, Tafel said.

The priest swallowed his spit. Is, is there a difference between summoning a demon and a devil? A demon is simply the underling of a devil! If a woman forms a contract with a demon, its the sa thing as forming a contract with a devil.

Im not the underling of a devil, Tafel said, her expression darkening. Im no ones underling.

Regardless, youre an evil entity, be you a demon or a devil.

Tafel tilted her head. Evil? How am I evil?

You betrayed the Lord!

Listen here, Tafel said and snorted. I dont even know who your lord is, alright? Im just a demon from another continentmaybe worldwhos looking for her friends. I havent done anything here that anyone would consider evil. Well, I ate a few fish from a river, but I dont think eating can be counted as evil. Her brow furrowed, and she turned towards Helena. Eating fish isnt considered evil, right?

Helena shook her head.

See? Tafel asked and nodded at the priest. Please, explain to how Im evil.

You tried to kill !

If I wanted you dead, you wouldnt be alive, Tafel said. But youre alive, which ans I dont want to kill you. Understand?

Then you want to keep alive to do other things! Youll convince to indulge in debauchery, forcing to sin. Youre trying to corrupt , to take away from the Lord. However, I wont fall for it no matter what you do!

Tafel took in a deep breath. Then she exhaled through her nose. Im not evil, and I dont want to do anything to you.

The priest narrowed his eyes. Is it that you dont want to? Or is it that you cant!? He pointed at Tafel. Youre in the house of the Lord, your power must be restricted! You may flaunt and show off, but its all a trick. I dont know why you were allowed inside, but if you hurt , youll face the Lords retaliation.

Tafel furrowed her brow. Was that really the case? She didnt hurt anyone because she didnt enjoy hurting peopleeven if the priest in front of her was practically begging for a beating. I suppose now would be a good ti to test it out, she said as her horns glowed silver. She readied herself to teleport at a monts notice. Then she slapped the priests face.

Helena gasped. The townsn wouldve gasped as well if they werent trying their best to keep their mouths shut. The priest was standing with his head turned to the side, his mouth open. He didnt move. It was as if he was struck by lightning. Tafel conjured a block of ice in the air beside her and cleaned her hand with it. It didnt look like thered be any retaliation. Her tension in her shoulders disappeared, but her horns remained glowing. You were saying?

The priest broke out into laughter. This is a dream. I understand now! Im dreaming. Yes, Im just dreaming. He raised his head and stared at the ceiling. Id like to wake up now!

Tafel sighed.
