The hall had gone the kind of quiet that happens after sothing unprecedented concludes and no one has yet decided how to process it. First-years who had been visibly unsettled during the cascade were now still in a different way: not reactive, calculating. From the upper tiers, everyone tracking where I went next. From the third tier, the particular perford disinterest that third-years maintained as a matter of institutional habit had simply dropped. They were watching directly. Without distance.

Third-years do not drop the distance. Not for first-years. Not as a rule. Filed.

I am noting that and walking faster.

I sat down.

The load reduced the mont I made contact with the seat.

Sa counter-pressure from the left. Sa precise boundary: outside the radius, full weight; inside, sothing intercepting a portion of it before it reached my outer nodes. Consistent. Repeatable.

I had a before and an after now. Thirty ters of before. And this is the after. The variable between them was her.

I noticed this when I first sat here. I did not examine it because there was a ceremony and my legs were tired and there were more imdiate things to process. My legs are still tired. The more imdiate things have not reduced in number.

The markers above her head were closer now. Distance had given count. Proximity gave color.

Three yellow. Two grey. One green.

No sound. Just the second layer sitting over the visual field the way it always did. I knew the colors. I knew the count. I did not know what either ant. The shapes above her head were not labelled. The system did not explain itself. I had been operating under the assumption that I would figure it out eventually and that assumption had not yet been tested because I had not yet had ti to sit still and actually look at anything.

The yellow ones had sothing running in them. Not movent. Not quite. Sothing I did not have a word for yet. The green one was still.

I did not know if the distinction mattered.

I did not know anything about the distinction.

There was a ceremony. I watched it.

The girl beside had not looked up when I returned.

She had not looked up when I first sat down either. Both tis I had arrived from the direction of the aisle, both tis the seat beside her was the only reasonable option, and both tis she had kept her eyes forward like soone who had practiced not reacting to things that happened next to her.

She was doing it again now. But the quality was different. Before, it had been still. Now it had the specific texture of soone actively not turning their head.

She turned.

She opened her mouth. Sothing crossed her face that was not what ca out next.

Then: "There was another one earlier." She said it at a pace that was slightly too even, like she had landed on it mid-thought and decided it was the safest place to start. "A first-year. Before your turn. The Reader asked the question three tis. But on the third question, the Reader stopped and imdiately gave the house assignnt. No cascade." A pause. "No verdict either."

She was looking at . Not steadily. More like she was checking sothing.

"Sa sequence. Sa third question. Different outco."

She stopped there. The implication did not need finishing. But that was not why she stopped. She stopped the way people stop when they realize they have been talking faster than they ant to and are deciding whether to acknowledge it.

She drew breath.

"What I want to know is—" she started.

"If you stay quiet," I said, "I will treat your shard parasite."

I know exactly who she is talking about.

I do not have the processing capacity to navigate a delicate, probing conversation with soone whose passive toxic mana emission is currently the only reason my own anomalous pressure isn't reading as a catastrophic threat to the room.

I just need her to stop talking.

The breath stopped.

One of her markers shifted.

Not all of them. One. The green one went yellow.

The still one. The one that had not moved since I sat down.

I saw it. A color change in real ti, direct response to a statent about sothing the subject had not disclosed to anyone. I did not know what it ant. I knew it had changed. I knew when.

What happened next: she went sowhere else entirely. Not shocked, not offended. Just gone for a mont, the way people go when sothing lands in a place they were not expecting anything to land.

Her mouth had been open. It stayed open for one second too long before she closed it.

This tale has been pilfered from . If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

She knew I saw that.

Less than two seconds.

Then she pulled herself back. The composure that ca back was doing more work than the original had been. You could tell because the original had not looked like effort.

She did not say anything. Her mouth stayed closed. Whatever she had been about to ask before was still in there sowhere. She had just decided it could wait.

I returned my attention to the platform.

Malenia had already moved past the incident. Not smoothing it over. Replacing it with sothing more useful.

"What you witnessed was a Reader behavioral response to an unclassified circuit anomaly." Flat. Informational. "Reader entities do not err. What they cannot confirm, they flag. The student on the platform provided answers the Reader could not confirm. The cascade was the result. It has been contained. The student has been assigned. The ceremony will continue."

A pause that was not uncertainty. The pause of soone choosing how much to carry forward.

"What I will address now is what the incident demonstrates about the nature of this institution and why you are here."

She looked at the room.

"You are Experintal Dolls. This is not a diminishnt. It is a function. This Academy does not produce graduates who have learned to perform competence in controlled conditions. It produces graduates who have been subjected to conditions that are not controlled, have failed in those conditions, and have continued. Growth does not erge through comfort. It erges at the threshold. What you call a wound, this institution calls data. What you call a crisis, this institution calls curriculum."

She let the room receive it.

"Every experience within these walls, including the one you witnessed today, is converted in real-ti into tadata. Logged. Assessed. Used. This is Critical State. It does not an we expect you to survive everything cleanly. It ans we expect you to learn from everything. Including the things that leave a mark."

"You will be given a system through which this Academy interfaces with you directly. Accept the integration when it prompts you. Everything you need for your first day is inside it."

She said one word.

"ODICIOS."

And in the upper right corner of my field of view, a prompt appeared.

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────

ODICIOS v.9.3.1

Academy of Endstoria / Integrated Student Operating System

In continuous operation since the First Year of Endstoria.

Requesting permission to integrate with active interface.

[ACCEPT] [DECLINE] [REVIEW]

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────

The most normal prompt I have seen today. A button.

Accept.

ODICIOS integrated cleanly. The interface assembled itself in layers until the full dashboard was present at the edge of my awareness. Malenia was still speaking. I had approximately two minutes.

ARS Stage I.

I was not at Stage I when I walked into this hall. The copper taste was real. The hum was real. And now the scan reads stable.

Sothing between the cascade and this notification changed what the external expression of my circuit looks like. Sothing that was not Syevira, because I had not returned to her radius yet when the dical team checked .

Direction to look in. Later.
