Yuri’s face paled instantly, the idea that he could die suddenly dawning heavily on him like a bucket of cold water.

Patro looked to one of his n who pulled th trigger. "Are you stupid? Did I ask you to shoot?"

The beta bodyguard glanced at him, frighetened. "But sir, your father, he—"

"Do I look like my father to you, huh?" He was fuming. "When I give you an order, you obey the damn thing!"

In his last sentence, he shot the bodyguard dead at the temple, watching him drop to the floor lifeless. "Idiot. This is my ga, not yours. You do what I ask you to."

The other bodyguard, who was clearly a brother, trembled, peering at the lifeless body of his younger brother on the floor. Patro had killed him without a single thought behind his eyes.

Caius who’d staggered towards Yuri, caught him in his arms as he fell to the floor. "Yuri...Yuri look at ." His trembling fingers reached to cup his cheek.

He still felt warm, he stil—

"Caius—"

"Just go, Malakai!" he snapped at Malakai who wanted to have a look at Yuri. The man could die. "Just go! He’s mine to take care of. He’s not going to die! You need to get Eve’s father to the hospital. Focus on that and let handle Yuri myself."

Malakai stared at him and slowly nodded. He proceeded to leave the building with Eve.

Yuri’s eyes were shut, almost as if he was slipping in and out of consciousness.

Caius took his suit jacket off, tossing it aside. He tore off a long piece from his dress shirt and proceeded to wrap it around his chest at the wound to slow down the bleeding. "Yuri, Yuri, look at ," he demanded.

Yuri forced himself to blink open the crystal blue of his eyes. His lips curled into a smile. "I think I’m about to die, Sir."

"No, you’re not. Stop mumbling nonsense."

"I’m going cold. I can feel my heart stopping and it’s not because I’m half a vamp. My heart has never stopped beating before because I’m not a full vampire," he spoke in harsh breaths. "But I can feel my heart slowing down now. I can’t—I can’t feel my body anymore. My vision—I can’t even see properly anymore."

Caius wiped off the beads of sweat on his forehead and brushed back his snow-white hair. "I’m going to get you to the hospital, so hold on as tight as you can. You can’t die and I’m not allowing you to, do you understand ?"

"Sir—"

"Yuri, if you die here before I can get you to the hospital, I’ll revive you sohow and then I’ll kill you myself in the worst way possible. Don’t test ."

Yuri cackled. "Yes, sir."

"Good." Caius rose to his feet, lifting his smaller fra into his arms. "Do you think you can hold out for twenty minutes? It should take that much to get you to the hospital."

"I can."

"Good, you’re my one and only friend. So no, you can’t die on ," he breathed out. "I’ll keep you alive no matter what it takes ."

Eve sat next to the hospital bed that her father was in. He was unconscious but from the nurses, she was sure he would be fine.

"It must have been so hard with them, no?" she mumbled, brushing back his hair with her palms. "It must have felt like hell because I’ve been there too. I told you I would get you out of there one way or another. Patro will never be able to hurt you again. Never again."

A look of relief painted her face and she drew a deep breath before rising from the chair. She beelined for the exit and shut the door behind her.

On the bench in the hallway, Malakai was seated, his legs crossed and a worried look on his face. She peered at him and approached him, taking a seat next to him on the bench.

"How is he?" Malakai asked.

"Better than I hoped. He’ll be fine in a few weeks," she responded, but she wouldn’t et his gaze. "Thank you...for today."

Malakai lifted a brow at her. "Look at ," he said. "Eve, look at ."

"Why?" she asked, yet to still turn her head.

Malakai’s hand reached for her face and his fingers wrapped around her jaw, turning her entire gaze on him. She blinked at him and swallowed.

"What are you doing?"

"I find it weird," he mumbled, his face wrinkling into a frown.

Eve’s brow tugged up. "What do you an?"

"You’re like a female version of your father."

"What does that an?" she slanted her head to the side.

"Pups usually look like their mothers, I’d expected you’d look like her, not your father, and you are very beautiful."

Eve began cackling. "My father is very handso, I know. Patro’s mother almost...well, you know."

He furrowed his brows.

"What about your mother? Is it just you and your father?"

"Yes." She nodded. "My mother died before I even manifested."

"She...died?"

Her attention dropped to her feet and she breathed. "Yes... She was um...sick."

The man furrowed his brows. How was that possible? Their kinds didn’t get sick as humans did—he’d never heard of such before.

"I know what you’re thinking," she broke into his thoughts. "I searched, I looked, I tried to figure out what she had been sick with, but I couldn’t. It wasn’t contactable either—It just made no sense to . I watched her get tired and tired every day until she eventually slept and never woke up again. Not even a goodbye. My father was a broken ss after, but he still took care of . He hid his own pain so that I could be happy... He would smile at , but I would never hear him speak. Compared to my mother, my father is very loquacious. It felt weird to suddnely barely hear him speak, like he was no longer thesa person..."

Malakai was silent and she glanced at him.

"You? Is it just your mother?"

"Yes," he responded. "My father was a deadbeat."

She paused. "Oh." Her lips stretched a bit in an apologetic smile.

"It’s fine. I barely rember what he looked like. I don’t even know where he is now," he dismissed the conversation and threw his head back to stare at the ceiling. "And I don’t care to know."
