“I see. Prince Leonard, you’re an Ultimate Alpha, right?” I asked to make sure that I understood correctly.
“The king, and the three princes of this kingdom are all Ultimate Alphas,” he replied matter-of-factly.
“What exactly is an Ultimate Alpha?” I inquired.
“An Ultimate Alpha is a man who possesses a very strong wolf. Mada Sand probably told you the legend already. Even I have no idea if that legend was even true but what seems to be true is that my kind has been around for a very long ti and just like other species that roam this earth, this specie has evolved to survive. To many people’s disappointnt, the werewolf didn’t evolve to beco more wolf but more human instead,” he explained.
“More human?” I repeated curiously.
“That’s right. As ti went by, werewolves lost both their number and also most of their wolf-like abilities. They were hunted because they were feared by humans and that greatly reduced their numbers. On top of that, nature thought that it would be better for the breed to beco more human for the werewolf to live peacefully mixed in with human society. The vast majority of werewolves or their descendants that exist today possess almost no wolf traits at all. They may have a better sense of sll, better fitness, or sothing that makes them slightly more superior than the average human but that is all...” the prince continued to explain.
I found everything so hard to believe but exciting at the sa ti. I wasn’t sure why, but I didn’t doubt a word that the prince was telling .
“So, they are pretty much like humans?” I asked.
“Yes. In the present day, most werewolves don’t even know that they have so wolf genes in them. They just think that they are humans and I think that it is better for them that way. As ti went by, more and more werewolves live mixed in with human society and they ended up mating and having offspring with humans. Naturally, this diluted the wolf traits until most don’t have or don’t show any wolf-like traits at all,” he said before peering into my face to judge my reaction.
“But...Ultimate Alphas are different, right?” I asked to confirm my suspicion.
I did see the prince transform partially into a wolf. So that probably ant that for him, things were very different from the vast majority of werewolves and their descendants.
“Correct. Ultimate Alphas possesses the strongest wolves. These Alpha wolves have the ability to lead the pack. In our case, that pack is this kingdom. They also have strong wolf-like abilities,” the prince replied smoothly.
“Like...being able to communicate with wolves?” I asked as I recalled the confusing scene of Prince Leonard talking to the pack of wolves deep in the forest on the mountain.
“Exactly. That is one example among many others. Another more common one is the ability to shift forms from a man into a wolf. So can shift in parts and so in whole...” he told casually as if it was sothing completely normal.
“What about you?” I asked before I could stop myself.
The prince seed surprised for very brief mont at my straightforward question but then his expression turned into one of amusent.
“I can pretty much beco a wolf...” he replied, and I could tell that he wasn’t proud about it at all.
I was about to ask him if he ever ca to the maids’ quarters in his wolf form when I recalled that black wolf that I saw under my balcony in the garden, but I stopped myself in ti. Was the wolf just a wild animal or was that the prince’s wolf form?
“Umm...” I murmured as I debated with myself whether or not I should ask him.
“Are you scared of now?” he asked as his blue eyes stared deeply into mine.
My heartbeat wildly hard and my chest suddenly felt tight. It may have been my own imagination or the way the light in the room casted a shadow over a part of his face, but for a mont, I thought that the prince had a terribly sad expression on his face.
“Not at all...” I replied more loudly than I had intended.
I wasn’t exactly lying. If he had asked if I was scared of him that night when I first saw him partially transform into a wolf, then my honest answer would probably be a firm ‘yes’. However, I wasn’t lying when I told him that I wasn’t scared of him right now.
“Really?” he asked as he arched a brow at .
“Really. Umm...your fur...is soft...” I murmured softly.
The prince was silent for a mont as he stared right at my face and then the cold expression on his face lted and was imdiately replaced by a smile that made feel all warm and fuzzy inside. His bright laughter echoed loudly in the room as he laughed like I had made the best joke in the world when all I did was complint his fur.
“You’re a really funny girl, Mila...” the prince said, and I wasn’t sure if that was a complint or not.
Not quite knowing what to say, I just plastered a smile on my face while I watched him struggling to control his laughter. I was sure that Mada Sand would get around to teaching about it eventually, but the prince had disturbed our lesson and he had insisted that he wanted to teach himself. If that was the case then, I thought that it would be appropriate if I asked him what I really wanted to know.
“Prince Leonard...” I called his na softly.
“What is it? You have such a curious look on your face...” he said after he had stopped laughing completely.
“What is an honorable maiden supposed to do exactly?” I asked the question that had been at the forefront of my mind.
The prince looked away from and then he heaved a loud sigh. When he turned to face again, there was a very cold and distant look in his blue eyes.
